20.01.2022 Is running good for back pain? It's World Spinal Health Day, & what better time to answer this question! A 2011 study by Dimitriades revealed that 1 hour of r...unning decreases the height of the lumbar discs by 1mm. So does this mean that running leads to increased wear & tear of the spine? A study released this year by Mitchell et al provided us answers to this question! They compared a group of middle aged runners to age matched controls & found that: Runners possessed 20% larger disc height compared to non-runners Runners possessed lower Pfirrmann grades (a measure of disc degeneration) These changes were dose dependent: meaning the more years run & greater distance performed. the greater disc improvement! The authors conclude that middle-aged long-term endurance runners exhibit less age-related decline in their lumbar discs compared to non-runners. Now we could delve into a discussion on the lack of relationship between pain & imaging findings, but this is for another day. So to conclude these findings, if you want a healthy spine, the answer is to lace up the runners & hit the pavement! Does it have to be running you may ask? NO it certainly doesn't, exercise in many different forms has been shown in multiple studies to be associated with less back pain, so if you prefer the weights room, or cycling or yoga then whatever it is get out there, #GetSpineActive and #BackOnTrack If you need help with your back pain, please don't hesitate to contact us! 03.01.2022 Have knee or low back pain? Live in regional Australia? Want physio delivered through telehealth? Please express your interest here: https://redcap.sydney.edu.au/surveys/?s=TMAHDA9KFW... The EMPOWER study is a clinical trial that is looking to examine the effectiveness of an eHealth program. This program involves real-time video-delivered Physiotherapy for people in rural and remote Australia with chronic back and knee pain . We are inviting people who have had back or knee pain for at least the last 3 months who intend to seek treatment for this pain. Study participants need to have access to a device like a computer or a mobile phone with Internet access that allows video calls. These video calls will happen at least once a month. If you are eligible for the study and decide to participate, you would then be randomly put into one of two study groups - either the eHealth group or what we call the usual care group. If you are put in the EHealth group, this will involve up to 6 eHealth sessions or video calls as well as accessing an online program. If you are put in the Usual care group, you will continue to access whatever local care or support you would normally access. And if you wished, we will provide you with assistance over the telephone and a referral to help you access a healthcare professional such as a physiotherapist at your local public hospital. With your participation in the EMPOWER study, our research team will be able to investigate if eHealth is an effective, acceptable and cost-effective way to improve health outcomes for rural and remote Australians with back or knee pain.

02.01.2022 Wishing all our patients and the Macleay community a safe and restful Easter. See you back in the clinic on Tuesday 6th April.
