24.01.2022 This morning I want to talk to you about something that was brought to my attention over the weekend. Hate speech against people with Down Syndrome and Amazon's promotion of such items encouraging others to participate and purchase. The items they are promoting and allowing sales of can be viewed by clicking on the petition link... Our friends Darcy and Julie at The Unexpected Journey need your support to sign the petition to stop this in its tracks and prevent Amazon for allowing this. I hope you stand with me in ensuring people with disabilities are not ridiculed, bullied or the centre of such heart breaking acts that I am absolutely appalled at. People with disabilities should not be treated in this manner no matter what. If you can support them please sign the petition here http://chng.it/RsBJkHdPYg

19.01.2022 October is Down Syndrome Awareness Month Down Syndrome s an Intellectual Disability and we have a number of families in Keeleys Cause with Down Syndrome children, in fact a couple of them have been iPad recipients. So what actually s Dowm Syndrome ?... Down syndrome is a chromosomal condition that is associated with intellectual disability, a characteristic facial appearance, and weak muscle Down syndrome is a condition in which a person has an extra chromosome. Chromosomes are genes in the body. They determine how a baby's body forms during pregnancy and how the baby's body functions as it grows in the womb and after birth. Typically, a baby is born with 46 chromosomes. Down syndrome however is a genetic disorder caused when abnormal cell division results in an extra full or partial copy of chromosome 21 This extra genetic material causes the developmental changes and physical features of Down syndrome The most common type of Down syndrome is trisomy 21, which means an extra copy of the 21st chromosone, however It is not hereditary. The other two types are translocation and mosaicism, which account for around 5% of cases. While incidences of Down syndrome correlate with the mother’s age, around 80% of Down syndrome babies are born to mothers under the age of 35. Nothing a parent does or does not do is known to cause Down syndrome during pregnancy it occurs randomly Nevertheless they are all beautiful children and people, they are different not less and have the ability and capability of many things in many areas There is a wide variation in ability in people with Down's syndrome just as there is in the rest of the population. Children and adults with Down's syndrome can and do continue to learn throughout their lives just like the rest of us. #downsyndrome #downsyndromeawarenessmonth #t21 #trisomy21 #differentnotless

06.01.2022 This video is about 2 families in the UK who have violent autistic children and how the system is failing to support them This rings so true for many Keeleys Cause families and families within Victora and many other locations in Australia. With Disability families not being supported or having appropriate Carer services or supports available to them, which has certainly been a massive issue during COVID 19 lockdowns and restrictions, how are they possibly able to get through... these times Many support services were unavailable to families at this time and it simply wasn’t good enough. This must change for all families as soon as possible struggling to maintain and cope with their child’s meltdowns and violent behaviour that also affect parents physically and mentally. It is hard enough caring for children with Autism at any time without putting families in full lockdown with no support to assist them through. Families need to be provided ongoing support to continue to care for their children, and must be supported at the highest level to do so. Hopefully COVID -19 has brought some changes to this system and their policies. https://youtu.be/puhlYl9W1Dw

03.01.2022 Our next neurological condition that impacts on a child's learning we will highlight for Fluro for Neuro is ADHD So what is it ? Its a chronic condition including attention difficulty, hyperactivity and impulsiveness.... ADHD often begins in childhood and can persist into adulthood. It may contribute to low self-esteem, troubled relationships and difficulty at school or work. ADHD is one of the most common neurodevelopmental disorders of childhood. It is usually first diagnosed in childhood and often lasts into adulthood. Children with ADHD may have trouble paying attention, controlling impulsive behaviors (may act without thinking about what the result will be), or be overly active What Are the Symptoms of ADHD? Short attention span, especially for non-preferred tasks. Hyperactivity, which may be physical, verbal, and/or emotional. Impulsivity, which may manifest as recklessness. Fidgeting or restlessness. Disorganization and difficulty prioritizing tasks. Poor time management and time blindness Standard treatments for ADHD typically involve medication, education, skills training and psychological counseling. A combination of these is often the most effective treatment. These treatments can help manage many symptoms of ADHD, but they don't cure it. It may take some time to determine what works best for you. #adhd #fluroforneuro
