24.01.2022 . BENCH PRESS TESTING It’s interesting, yet not surprising, that people’s judgements of what I do physically can be formed solely from what I post to Instagram. I tend to prioritise bodyweight training and skills in my feed, yet weights and ‘conventional’ strength/hypertrophy training probably makes up 30-40% of my training. Having said that, I haven’t bench pressed since 11th of March, and a lot of my chest work has come from bodyweight/calisthenics and dumbbell movements.... This week I got curious, and decided to do some testing. I was actually ecstatic with 80x3, 90x3, 100x2, and 110x1. I think I’ll incorporate bench press into my routine again... 23.01.2022 . MORE THAN ONE INVERSION In the world of inversions, handstands don't roam alone; it walks with its siblings like the crow and crane. Here, I'm performing a crane, which differs to the slightly easier crow where arms are bent. The advantage to regressing to simpler inversions is that you get to spend more time upside down while having some assistance, allowing you to improve on your hand balance.... Sometimes taking a step back allows you to progress. You also get more familiar with the feeling of blood rushing to your head and having your eyes bulge out of your skull (jokes, this doesn't really happy...much) Hey. Also. 19.01.2022 . NORDIC HAMSTRING CURL All I want for Christmas is... ...to perform an unassisted Nordic hamstring curl. And I did (about 6wks ago mind you).... These have honestly been a goal of mine since injuring my hamstring a couple of years ago. I can’t say I’ve worked at them consistently over that time, but definitely throughout this year. 16.01.2022 . HANDSTAND BENEFITS I think the above sums up the benefits to a handstand quite well, but I’d like to add one more point. Handstands are fkn humbling, and what I love most is what they’ve taught me. Some days I feel like I’m on a roll, nailing every entry and executing long solid holds. Other days, I can’t seem to catch one. 15.01.2022 . HANGING TOE TOUCHES These are something I don’t do enough, and am now incorporating more into my training. A good hanging toe touch requires you to get your toes to the bar with nice straight legs, WITHOUT leaning back at all in the upper body! That last point is what I need to work on, requiring adequate hamstring flexibility and strong core compression.... 15.01.2022 . WEIGHT LOSS TIPS As you can see in this infographic, there are no crazy unheard of secrets to slimdown town. Because the truth to HEALTHY weight loss is: There are no quick fixes There are no shortcuts... There are no magic pills The above points are general pieces of advice to simply being a healthier you! Drink more water, get adequate sleep, and eat a balanced diet with plenty of plant-based foods. And if you want to lose weight, you’re going to have to be in a caloric deficit, and you’re going to have be patient and persistent! 15.01.2022 . HEARTY DOSE OF GRATITUDE On 23/03/2020, all Australian gyms, and many other facilities for that matter, closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It’s one of those dates that feels so recent yet so distant. At the time, my PT business was in its infancy, and due to only coaching clients two days per week, I was pretty nervous about what could ensue. I was equally anxious about my other occupation (Podiatrist) - would allied health clinics close? Would I still have a job? Fortu...nately, Podiatry continued (somewhat) as per usual. But the point of this post is to show some very heartfelt gratitude to my Keen Physique clients. Like many other trainers, I adapted to the conditions and continued on as best as I could. I found suitable outdoor space, purchased too many cleaning products and hand sanitiser, and got to work. But NONE of this would have been possible without the KEENness of my clients, who were all so willing and happy to continue training with me. You know who you are, and I thank you all so much. And I want these beliefs to spill into all aspects of my life - business included. So, I’m ecstatic to announce that Keen Physique has officially become a partner of @edenprojects!... Eden Projects is an absolutely beautiful non-profit organisation, providing fair wage employment to impoverished villagers to act as agents of global forest restoration. To date, Eden Projects have planted over 333,000,000 trees across Nepal, Madagascar, Haiti, Indonesia, Mozambique, Kenya, and Central America. This reforestation has lifted people out of extreme poverty, restored natural landscapes, and allowed wildlife to flourish. So, my contribution is as follows: 5 trees planted, per client, per week. 13.01.2022 . PEA ALFREDO Give this recipe a save and try it for yourself some time! It may look like a lot but this is so easy and so tasty. I love how you can make such delicious and creamy sauces in a Vitamix just by using vegetables. Get your Vitamix from the legends at @rawblendoz PEA ‘ALFREDO’ SAUCE... 1 head cauliflower (approx 800g) 2 white potatoes (approx 350g) 3-4 cloves garlic 1 leek 150g frozen peas Approx 10g nutritional yeast 20g cashews 1 vegetable stock cube (I used @massel_foods) Water (about 100mL) EXTRAS 360g rice (@thesourcewestendbrisbane) 350g hard tofu 2 cans cannellini beans 2 carrots 200g mushrooms 1-2 zucchini 2 handfuls baby spinach METHOD: 1. Steam the cauliflower, potato, garlic, and leek until soft. 2. While steaming the above, fry off tofu, carrot, zucchini, mushroom, and zucchini. 3. Add rice to the fried tofu and vegetables, + just enough water to cover. Lower the heat and allow the rice to swell. 4. Add your steam vegetables to a blender (I use a Vitamix from @rawblendoz). 5. Add nutritional yeast, cashews, peas, stock, and water, then blend at high speed until smooth. Alter water for your desired consistency. 6. Once the rice has cooked, add your pea alfredo sauce, as well as the spinach and stir through! This made 6 serves. 579cals and 33P | 10F | 85C per serve. 12.01.2022 . R U OK? As you’ve probably seen across your feeds today, September 10th is R U OK day. Obviously today is not the only day we should be asking R U OK, but it is a day to spread awareness and not be afraid to speak out. So with that it mind, I would like to give a personal example not of when I’ve struggled, but when I could have been better in asking someone if they’re ok.... There have been times where my partner has felt particularly low/sad/had a shitty day, and when looking back at these moments, I’ve found that I’ve been the Fix it kind of person. I’ve been one who has the solution and focuses on conveying that to my loved one, rather than simply being there and allowing her to feel heard. Actually having the emotional presence to empathise, listen, and offer a hug is so much more valuable then being a hero with the answers. 11.01.2022 . STEP DOWNS I LOVE this exercise, and my clients do too. These are great to improve knee health and stability, while obviously working on your balance! The best way to approach these is to start at ground level with just your body weight, and progress with load and volume until you can do these weighted off a step.... There’s no real end goal, but I have read that the gold standard is having the equivalent to your bodyweight on your shoulders off a 6-inch step. Start small and build! 11.01.2022 . NO WEIGHTS? NO PROBLEMS How do we improve our strength, muscle size and muscle tone? Progressive overload.... Is the only way to do this by increasing the weight on the bar? HECKIN’ NO!! These example split squats show three ways you can increase load and stress within your muscle without even touching extra weights. ELEVATED FRONT FOOT/KNEE OVER TOES - this increases knee flexion and therefore quad activation. DEFICIT - now you’re going beyond ground level, increasing range of motion. SLOW ECCENTRIC & PAUSED REPS - increased time under tension. Just remember, you’re muscles don’t know the number of kilos on the bar, they just recognise the stress your placing upon them. Brisbane is blessed with many incredible walks all within 1.5hrs drive. This beautiful 10.5km hike is Mt Mitchell, located in the Main Ranges National Park. 08.01.2022 . MOCHA PEANUT PROTEIN RICE CRISPY I had to steal this recipe from @run2food and make if for myself as it’s ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE. I highly recommend you follow Michelle’s page as there are drool-worthy recipes uploaded frequently. MOCHA PEANUT PROTEIN RICE CRISPY... (vegan, gluten-free) Serves: 15 P7.4 | F8.6 | C15.3 INGREDIENTS: Dry: 2 cups rice bubbles (approx 80g) 80g chocolate protein powder (@macr0mike) 4 tablespoons cacao powder (from @thesourcewestendbrisbane) Wet: 2 shots espresso coffee (or 3 tsp instant coffee dissolved in a dash of boiling water) 135g maple syrup (approx 1/2 cup) 1/2 cup peanut butter (from @thesourcewestendbrisbane) Topping: 100g vegan dark chocolate (I used 78% @lindt_australia) 1 tablespoon peanut butter METHOD: 1. Prepare a container/tray with non-stick paper (mine was approx 20x30cm) 2. In a large bowl, mix together the dry ingredients 3. Add in the wet ingredients and mix quickly until no dry mix remains and a thick dough-like consistency is formed 4. Transfer this to your container and spread into an even layer 5. Freeze for 30mins 6. Melt chocolate and stir in the nut butter until smooth. Pour this over your now frozen layer 7. Return to the freezer for 10 minutes until the chocolate is set before slicing *Storage tips: these store really well in an airtight container in the freezer for weeks! I tweaked the recipe slightly to make a larger amount, and swapped almond butter for peanut butter as this is what I had. I recommend you go to Michelle’s page @run2food and use her recipe as a guide. My slice was thinner due to using a larger container and wanting more servings. If you want this to be extra #thicc, use a smaller container. 06.01.2022 . TESTIMONIAL About two weeks ago, I made a post to thank my lovely clients. I wanted to show gratitude to them for continuing their training throughout the pandemic, allowing me to continue doing what I love i.e. coaching. What I didn’t expect were the kinds words in return from several of my clients. I was overwhelmed with positive emotions.... Erin is someone I’ve worked with for about a year now, and it’s been an absolute pleasure. 05.01.2022 . FRONT SQUAT SKITZ I couldn’t believe my luck when David Attenborough reached out to #collab with me. I think we’re really onto some golden here with his next series, Planet Girth (credit to @moniquesharaya ). But seriously, this is me impersonating the big man for one of my favourite lower body movements; the front squat.... A front squat is where the load is placed onto the front of the shoulders. This enables you to keep a more upright torso, which in turn reduces hip flexion and increases knee flexion. That is why this is a knee dominant exercise rather than hip dominant (back squat). If you want to listen to some truth bombs, good music and R-rated rants, all while learning a cuppla things, follow this man! This superset is going to burn, but it will provide an extremely good stimulus for muscle growth.... 30sec ‘isometronic’ towel squat Front squat x8-12 ‘Isometronic’ contractions differ from a typical isometric contraction, as you’re only remaining static due to the towel not being able to stretch any further. In other words, grip that towel, and push as hard as you can into the ground for 30secs as if you’re trying to break that thing in two! The second half of the video shows my little twist on this involving overhead squats. Will these work your quads as much as a front squat? Definitely not. But they’re fun and I enjoy them, and what’s exercise if you don’t enjoy it? It’s not as fun I’ll tell you that much for free! Videos sped up 2x cus y’all impatient. 01.01.2022 . PUMPKIN SOUP Thanks to my amazing mother @tazpink04, pumpkin soup is a childhood favourite of mine. I don’t think I could ever come close to mum’s cooking, but this is a bloody solid attempt that’s great for those cool nights. Thanks for @moniquesharaya for the assistance. INGREDIENTS... 1 butternut pumpkin 1-2 washed potatoes (size/preference) 1 large carrot 1 parsnip 1 brown onion 2-4 cloves or garlic 1 vege stock cube Water METHOD 1. Roast all vegetables - tbh I didn’t really time them. Fan-forced 180deg celsius for approx 20-30mins. 2. Place roasted vegetables in a bloody good blender - they don’t get more bloody goodier than @vitamix_aunz from the incredible @rawblendoz 3. Add water - the amount depends on your consistency preference. Could be 200mL, could be 500mL. I don’t know, I’m not your DAD. 4. Blend at high-speed for 1-2mins. 5. Enjoy - on its own, with some bread, upside down, with your mate Geoff. Again, I’m not your dad. This recipe made 4 serves. The beautiful thing about soup is you can do what I did here and kind of wing it. I guess the rule of thumb is if it’s a PUMPKIN soup, it should mostly be pumpkin.
