24.01.2022 Just when we thought things were easing off & our covid rules relaxed, the unpredictability of this pandemic has popped up again! We are asking that if you have been in the Brisbane/SE QLD area that you DO NOT come into the clinic & self isolate yourself as described in the Public Health Order. Additionally if you have visited to the township of Byron Bay area, you are also asked NOT to attend our clinic in person whilst the situation unfolds.... We are still here to help! If you are someone in these categories, please call us & we will figure out a plan

22.01.2022 Fun Fact Friday Friday 13th - Superstition edition Stepping in dog poop is actually considered good luck in France if you do it with your left foot. Except it's bad luck if you step in it with your right foot. ... According to a Russian superstition, bird poop that lands on you or something that belongs to you will bring you wealth Back in 600BC, saying "rabbit rabbit" or "white rabbit" in Britain or North America, on the first day of every month ensures good luck for that month. This is because rabbits were thought to communicate with the spirits of the underworld because they lived underground. A rabbit's foot is also thought to bring good luck (but for it to be considered lucky, it has to be the left hind foot) In Britain, a bride and groom who encounter a black cat on their wedding day are ensured a happy marriage. Sailors avoid saying the word cat, but having a black cat aboard ship is believed to bring good fortune. In fact, the wives of sailors used to keep black cats to ensure their husbands’ safe return.
21.01.2022 THE CLINIC WILL HAVE A TEMPORARY CLOSURE FROM 2-3.30PM TODAY FOR A STAFF MEETING Thank you for cooperation
21.01.2022 Summer, is that you? It's about to become consistently hot out there folks! Always remember to check for fresh water & ensure the bowls/buckets aren't in the sun during the day. Same goes with their play pools - we don't accidently want to create a boiling hot bath!
20.01.2022 We're still CLOSED today for the Boxing Day public holiday but we'll be open again tomorrow from 8am. Please be sure to CALL us to schedule an appointment(even urgent ones) rather than just turning up. This is to avoid a potentially long wait to be seen after 4 days closed Have a fun & safe day off

19.01.2022 Fun Fact Friday A group of jellyfish is called a ‘bloom’, ‘swarm’ or ‘smack’. The Lions Mane jellyfish can get as big as a Blue Whale! ... Jellyfish can also regenerate their tentacles and grow and shrink their entire bodies depending on their food supply. These creatures don’t have brains, blood, a heart or bones. Jellyfish also use their mouths both for eating and for waste elimination. Box jellies are the deadliest jellyfish on Earth. They not only have a massively toxic venom but they also set themselves apart from their cousins by having complex eyes & the ability to propel themselves through the water rather than just drift. The Turritopsis Dohrnii jellyfish, as it ages, or if it gets injured or starves, it can turn itself back into individual baby jellyfish, called polyps. It can then clone itself and become a new jellyfish that is genetically identical to the first one!
18.01.2022 Fun Fact Friday A group of frogs is called an army. There is evidence that frogs have existed for more than 200 million years. They were also the first land animals with vocal cords. ... When a frog swallows food, it pulls it's eyeballs down into the roof of their mouth, to help push the food down its throat. There are some species of frogs that swallow their fertilized eggs where they develop into tadpoles & remain in their stomach or vocal sacs for up to eight weeks, finally hopping out of their mouths as little frogs!

01.01.2022 Fun Fact Friday Honey bees live in groups called hives. All members are divided into three types: The Queen: ONE queen runs the whole hive! Her role is to lay all of the eggs to create the next generation. She also produces chemicals that direct the behaviour of all of the other bees. Workers: Workers are ALL female! They forage for food, build and protect the hive & circulate clean air by moving their wings. Workers are typically the only bees you will see.... Drones: These are ALL the male bees, and their purpose is purely reproducing with the new queen. Hundreds live in each hive except in winter, when the hive goes into survival mode, the drones are kicked out! The queen can live up to 5 yrs! She is busiest in summer, when she can lay up to 2,500 eggs a day! If the queen bee dies, workers will create a new one by selecting a young larva (newly hatched) and feeding it a special food called royal jelly. This enables it to develop into a fertile queen! The poor average worker bee lives for just 5-6 weeks. In this time, she’ll produce around a twelfth of a teaspoon of honey.
19.12.2021 The year that was 2021! We had a LOT of changes at the clinic in 2021, from our extension renos to the covid rule rollercoaster! We would just like to take the time to thank all of you for your patience throughout the whole process. Covid has thrown out so many additional challenges & as a whole you have been supportive, kind & understanding during it all. ... Also to extend a special thank you to Joel Jensen Constructions & all of his associated trades, for their professionalism and for making it as easy as possible, with minimal disruption to our normal business. We have posted a few photos of the additional rooms we have added on for the benefit of our patients! The clinic also welcomed a new baby & a grandbaby in 2021! Dr John has reduced his hours in the clinic to be working with his large animals here, there & everywhere, all whilst adjusting to dad life. Dr Erin also joined us recently, who is working part time in clinic. We sadly said goodbye to nurse Kate as she moved away to start her new chapter in QLD We added a junior nurse to the team, Charlie, to continue her studies next year & Josh returned to work with us for a while after a 5 year break. Here's to a healthier & smoother 2022!
02.12.2021 Fun Fact Friday A hyenas laugh with their use of pitch & tone, can indicate both their age & their social status Spotted hyenas hunt in packs with 95% of a hyenas diet resulting from their hunting. A group of hyenas can devour an entire zebra, leaving no leftoversnot even the bonesin under 30 minutes!! ... Females rule the groups! Even baby girl cubs are higher in status than adult males! Females are more muscular & have 3x as much testosterone in their bodies than males Hyena birth & survival is a traumatic one!! The female spotted hyena has a pseudo-penis, which is used for urination, copulation, and birth! This makes the birthing process difficult, it’s estimated that 60% of cubs die from suffocation & mums risk tearing of the pseudo-penis lining, an injury that can prove fatal. Those that do survive have to literally fight to survive with mums having only 2 nipples, leaving only the strongest of cubs in the litter to feed & face life's challenges. (These facts were traumatic! Glad I'm not a hyena!)
04.11.2021 A very safe, healthy & happy Christmas to you all

01.08.2021 Fun Fact Friday Elf Owls are the world’s smallest owls. Adult owls grow to only 13cm high & their wingspan is just 20cm long. They are also extremely light, weighing under 60g! Elf owls are agile hunters of insects but they also prey on scorpions & spiders. If they capture more than they need, they'll store the extra food in their nesting hole for later. ... During mating season, males woo females by singing loudly from within their nest holes, luring partners to check out their nests. They have a special song reserved for mating purposes, which they sing nonstop until a female follows them inside. To further entice a female, the male elf owl will offer her food as part of the courtship ritual.
