19.01.2022 A section of a work I just finished in Cloncurry. The work commemorates the unfathomably huge floods of the region in 2019. I’ve spent the last 3 months here in NW Queensland, learning and listening to stories of triumph and tragedy. Looking to bring a creative voice to these stories. 15.01.2022 Monto, you were so fun. It’s not often as an artist your asked to paint something as fun as this. Make the tank look like it’s old and cracked with water coming out of it, then have a bunch of local kids playing under the water - This image was a slight adjustment to the theme when a power line made it hard for us to use the surface on this part of the tower. We decided a kid swinging from the platform would work best. As the landscape has evolved over mil- lenia, many moons and stories have come and gone. 14.01.2022 This was so much fun. Late one night when @drapl and I were having dinner at the pub with a few people we decided to paint a picture of our sweet new friend Cheryl! She’d been looking after us with baked treats while we were in Monto, so we thought we’d surprise her with a portrait. This is her the following morning after we’d been busy the night before. @drapl nearly broke his neck painting this one after falling off a bin which he was using as a ladder. May have had a few too many. 07.01.2022 For a long time, I hated coming up with artwork designs for my work. I felt super frustrated at the reality of having to essentially create the work before i painted it. I know so many mural artists who feel the same way and struggle through this process. In the last couple of years I have grown to love this part of making an work. I feel I owe this to my love of photography. I realized that in order for me to paint the artwork, the imagery needed to be my own. I watched a lo...t of my favorite artists @guidovanhelten @fintan_magee @adnate @claire_foxton put so much energy into finding their subject matter. I have to say this is such a huge aspect of creating artwork with depth beyond its aesthetics. By putting time and energy into every detail in a concept, it means at the end of the day. When coming to paint it, there are loads of moments, memories and feelings that trickle through into the finished artwork. Alongside the experience of painting the piece these experiences have huge impact. Learning this over time has helped me to really embrace every part of the design process. It can be painstakingly slow with many drafts not coming to fruition. At the end of the day, the experiences end up somewhere in the artwork. Sometimes it’s easy though. You meet a bunch of local kids and they spray each other with a hose while you take photos of the fun. But then sometimes they turn on you and you get soaked in the process!! This place already feels like home to me and my girly and doggo Charlie.
