25.01.2022 Hans from keepmetidee is just finalising the chimney sweep and gutter clean round for tomorrow 17/6 for the Leongatha and mirboo north areas. We have a few spots left. Due to weather and distance we can’t accommodate a service for a single request when you suddenly have an issue with the heater so being proactive could save your family a lot of inconvenience or grief. 23.01.2022 What does the top of your chimney look like? Is the mortar cracked or the chimney plate not sealed and letting water in? This is what your inbuild wood heater may look like after allowing water into your chimney. This is one of many things we look for when doing a chimney sweep. 21.01.2022 Last week was an extremely busy week for us doing chimney sweep and inspections. I have never seen that many dangerous installations in one week. Many were missing part of their flue which meant gasses and debris were going back into the house. Many were extremely lucky not to have had a fire or be overcome by carbon monoxide poisoning. We were also finding many corroded cowls letting in water and in danger of collapsing. Buckled baffle plates restricting the flue, doors with... missing rope or handles and fireboxes cracked or blocked because they allowed their wood heater to burn to hot. One cause of the latter is burning cypress. Cypress will burn too hot when dry and leave your chimney caked with tar if not seasoned properly. If you insist on burning cypress ( not recommended) please mix it with other hardwood. A well maintained wood heater is safer and more efficient. We carry cowls and an assortment of baffle plates. 18.01.2022 Hi guys. Hans and support staff from keepmetidee would like to wish you all a wonderful Christmas and safe, exciting new year. Although we were again very busy this year, 2020 certainly was challenging. There were travel restrictions, I lost my sister, a friend and a couple of family members preventing me from servicing many my clients in a timely manner. If 2020 has taught us anything it’s to appreciate every small moment and to grab every opportunity that comes your way. That may be grabbing a coffee with a friend, or calling someone you haven’t spoken to in a while. Next year will be bigger and better. Start this thinking about servicing your heater and chimney now. This year was extremely busy with both chimneys, gutters and gardens. The unseasonably wet weather had put us behind a number of times and our sincere apologies to those to whom we didn’t get to. We saw an unprecedented number of dangerous installations this year with collapsed cowls, non compliant chimney installations and flues so badly split the...y were at point of collapse. 12.01.2022 It was wet today. We should know because we were in it cleaning chimneys and blocked gutters. Out of the 5 chimneys we attended today 3 customers were advised the heater was not safe to use. None of those people will have a heater until it’s replaced. One heater had a collapsed cowl and badly split flue. Though we carry cowls, the flue will have to be replaced by a plumber. One heater had no flue at all! It was an insert heater in an old masonry chimney. A wood heater cann...ot be put in an old fireplace without a flue and for good reason, it’s dangerous and inefficient. The other build in heater was old. Upon inspection the baffle had disintegrated and so had the flue. This is why you get them checked before winter starts. Granted, two of those customers had only just bought the house and had the foresight to get the heater checked. Anyone can run a brush through a flue, but will you recognize the signs? Last week we again found numerous dangerous installations. Some we could fix by replacing baffle plates or cowls, others needed a new flue and those customers could not use their heater until a plumber fixed the issue. Though an inconvenience, at least they can now use the heater safely. How well is your heater drawing? When was the last time it was inspected? 09.01.2022 You have to stop and smell the roses when you can. Today we conducted chimney sweep in Venus Bay, Walkerville, tarwin Lower, Fish Creek, Foster and Toora. My only regret; not bringing a small stove, a kettle and some snags. Be sure to visit Anges falls. Well worth it.

08.01.2022 Wow, what a week it has been. Blocked cowls, baffle plates so buckled they had to be cut out, many split flues ( very dangerous) and many dubious and dangerous installations. One flue was actually upside down and not properly braced to the joists! Another issue we are coming across is people not knowing how to maintain their wood ovens. They are becoming popular again. We even attended a brick chimney that had caught fire. Wow! I have never seen a brick chimney this conges...ted. We were surprised it didn’t catch fire 10 years ago. It will take some time to clean that one when we get a chance to get to it. Please get your wood heaters serviced! A well maintained wood heater is safer and more efficient. 07.01.2022 We could join the Lehland brothers. Heyfield, Traralgon, Morwell, Mirboo North, thorpdale, Leongatha, Inverloch, tarwin, stony creek, Nerrena, cockatoo, emerald, nar Nar goon, bunyip, foster and Koo wee Rup, just to name a few places we have visited in the past few weeks. Numerous split flues, collapsed cowls and buckled baffle plates. Some heaters were written off all together. We are also coming across a number of wood heaters without a flue. This has been illegal for a long time now and for good reason. It’s dangerous. We refuse to clean those. Do you know the maintenance history of your wood heater? 07.01.2022 We have seen some dangerous installations lately, but this one shocked us. This why we inspect the cowl, flue and firebox. We do more than just run a brush through a chimney. What you see is what can happen when you don’t maintain your chimney. The issue wasn’t a congested flue. It’s a collapsed cowl, split flue and poorly installed insulation. The insulation has caught alight at one stage and even the floor boards are scorched. The previous owners were very lucky not to ha...ve a house fire. The current owners only recently bought the property and decided not to light the heater until it was checked. It was a wise decision. Had they lit the heater they may not have been as lucky as the previous owner. First warning sign to us was debris on top of the heater. Please remember. 04.01.2022 Again today we had a case where the client was lucky not to have the place burn down. She had only just moved in. The cowl had collapsed and the flue had split. Not only had it split, it had collapsed on itself. The flues weren’t even connected. She was extremely lucky. Anyone can run a brush through a flue, but will they know the warning signs? Don’t wait until something bad happens. A well maintained wood heater is safer and more efficient. Yes, it will give you peace of mind and you’ll use less wood with better draw.
