17.01.2022 Monash City Council is helping create the next generation of environment leaders with the Bush Kinder program. Check out more below Over the past few years, Monash Council has received strong interest from early learning centres to provide nature play experiences for their children in outdoor environments. In response, Monash has developed bush kinder spaces in our sporting and recreation reserves. The bush kinder program works collaboratively with early learning centres ...to design and install the bush kinder spaces. Children create mud maps of what they’d love to play on and explore. Council then repurposes large tree logs, rocks and other elements to invite children to experience the reserve in a whole different way; through climbing, balancing and swinging on these natural elements, discovering the insects, birds and skinks that benefit from the habitat, and helping to plant native species that increase the nature value of the space. Children from the centres also grow indigenous plant seedlings, which they help to plant and care for in the spaces. The bush kinder spaces brings nature back into our sporting reserves, enjoyed by the children from the centres and other families who visit the reserve and watch sporting matches. The program has involved corporate volunteers, nearby neighbours, as well as early learning centre staff, children and families. We are installing a new bush kinder space every year, and with each new space young people, wildlife and insects benefit and grow in so many ways. The Bush Kinder Spaces Program is part of the Monash Council’s umbrella Green Shoots program (connecting the community with nature). @cityofmonash #nature #naturekids #bush #bushkinder #education #youngleaders #environment

17.01.2022 Meet one of the 2020 Sustainable Cities Gift Fund Recipients: Network West Jasmine, like so many ordinary Australians during the COVID-19 pandemic, decided to help her community. Using her networks and her sewing talent, Jasmine offered to sew surgical gowns for Western Health. They happily requested a mere 6,000 gowns! Given the scale, Jasmine reached out to her friends and local Neighbourhood Houses. Pat, coordinator of Point Cook Community Learning Centre and herself a sk...illed seamstress, embraced the idea and began working on creating a pattern and a project. During lockdown, Neighbourhood Houses were looking for ways to stay engaged with their communities. Twelve Neighbourhood House coordinators immediately rounded up their sewing groups. With the help of a local tailor, they laser cut fabric donated by Spotlight, and the project got underway. Thousands of gowns later, we are scaling back as the need recedes. Resilient communities are able to bounce back from a crisis, and they build resilience through strengthening the interconnections that weave the fabric of our community together. That’s the intention and outcome of ‘Sewing Scrubs: Building the fabric of community in the west'.
