25.01.2022 This week is National Children’s Week, which is dedicated to celebrating children, promoting the Rights of the Child and to remind us of our responsibility to advocate for children as citizens and their right to a positive childhood. At Keiki Northshore OSHC, this week gave us an opportunity to have a deep conversation about how children felt regarding their rights and needs to be able to have a wonderful childhood. We created a mind map of their ideas and knowledge of their ...rights, using the United Nation Rights of a Child poster to prompt their thinking. At Keiki Early Learning we use Children’s Week to celebrate how the rights of a child are incorporated into our practice. This year’s theme is Children have the right to choose their own friends and safely connect with others. At Keiki we support children of all ages to socialise and play safely and at their own pace. For more on National Children’s Week, visit https://www.napcan.org.au/childrensweek/
25.01.2022 Last week our resident artist Tracy painted a large Aboriginal Seasons mural on the outside kindy wall at Keiki Edgewater. The six seasons are an important part of our learning curriculum and are displayed within our services for children and educators to refer to. The painting sparked lots of questions from the children, who asked if they could also paint on the wall like Tracy. We explained that Tracy was allowed as she had permission from our owner Sam, but encouraged the children to create their own mural themselves using cardboard panels attached to the opposite fence. They were super excited and proud to create their own version of the mural and learn more about what the six Aboriginal seasons meant at the same time
24.01.2022 Exciting and inspiring workshops celebrate and recognise the magic in each of our valued Keiki Crew members. 24.01.2022 The children at Keiki Northshore enjoyed a bush walk on Thursday. The children were exploring the native plants blooming and enjoying the surrounding view. The children noticed some daisies were closed and learnt that they were closed due to the sun going down, when the sun rises tomorrow they will open up towards the sun. After our walk we enjoyed drawing our own interpretation of the golden wattle.
23.01.2022 Last weekend we had a wonderful time at Eden Beach park celebrating Father’s Day with our Keiki Mindarie Keys families. We had a fantastic turn out and enjoyed eating blueberry muffins, climbing on the ropes, sliding down the slides and drinking babycinos together!
23.01.2022 The children at Keiki Glendale celebrated their Grandparents last week with a special afternoon tea held in honour of Grandparent's Day. It was so beautiful to see the children welcoming their grandparents. Some of the activities they enjoyed together were: Making a collaborative art piece from handprints Decorating key rings and mugs as sharing gifts... Exploring the sandpit Storytime on the couch Afternoon tea in the sunshine It was a spectacular afternoon with smiles shared all round! Thank you to the wonderful grandparents who came along, we loved seeing the special connection you have with your grandchildren
22.01.2022 We have had an interest in lavender and wild flowers at Keiki Edgewater, as one of the children regularly arrives in the morning with a beautiful smelling sprig of lavender!Yesterday we provided all the ingredients already measured out for the kindy children to make lavender play dough by themselves with verbal cues.
22.01.2022 Last week we celebrated Talk Like a Pirate Day at Keiki Early Learning, having lots of fun while at the same time raising funds and awareness for childhood cancer. The children and educators at Keiki Glendale had so much fun dressing up like pirates, pretending to be pirates, making telescopes, reading pirate stories, and going on a treasure hunt! #talklikeapirateday #childhoodcancerawareness #keikicute
21.01.2022 Our Keiki Glendale children had a lot of fun getting into the kitchen to make pancakes last week Cooking is such a fantastic experience for young children as it helps to introduce early maths and science concepts as well as social skills and working together. After taking turns to measure, pour and mix the ingredients the children waited patiently for the pancakes to cook. The pancakes made a delicious addition to our afternoon tea fruit platter, yum!
21.01.2022 KEIKI MINDARIE KEYS - Ball drop Here's a great activity for your leftover carboard boxes - make a ball drop! The babies at Mindarie Keys have been working on their fine motor development and hand-eye coordination with a homemade ball drop game. Using recycled cardboard, the holes were cut out and coloured, then stuck to the wall. The children had so much fun putting their balls through the holes and watching as they dropped to the floor.
21.01.2022 As our children grow and develop, it's important to help them build resilience and manage their feelings. Maggie Dent has some helpful tips in this article, very fitting for the year we are experiencing. https://www.maggiedent.com//helping-our-kids-master-disa/
21.01.2022 The children at Keiki Northshore enjoyed a fantastic visit from Trinity Village Dental last week. This incursion was organised due to the children’s curious question what are teeth made out of?. We had a great and interactive group discussion about how to keep our teeth healthy by choosing what food to eat, how sugar makes holes in your teeth, when and how to brush your teeth and the three layers that our teeth are made up of. Trinity Village Dental
20.01.2022 A great opportunity for families in Yanchep and surrounds to learn about early reading and phonics, and meet teachers and staff of the new school.
20.01.2022 Each of our services begins the day with certain rituals, such as a Yarning Circle where we say the Acknowledgement to Country and sing Wanjoo (welcome). This beautiful video shows two of our children at Keiki Glendale confidently doing an acknowledgement to country all by themselves at our Yarning Circle last week. A key part of our philosophy is embedding Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture within our curriculum, including important values about respect for others and the land on which we live.
18.01.2022 KEIKI MINDARIE PRIMARY - All things road safety The children at Mindarie Primary Three Plus have been exploring what safety means and ways in which they can keep themselves and others safe. This week the focus has been on road safety. Inspired by their visit to the school traffic warden last month, the children created their own pedestrian crossing, traffic lights and stop signs using recycled cardboard and paint. They loved the hands-on experience of creating the signs ...which also gave them a better understanding of what the colours and shapes mean. The children have also been playing the red and green game using coloured rackets to learn that red means stop and green means go The game was a lot of fun, but also helps the children to understand how colours communicate what we should do when we are crossing the road, and how they can help keep us safe.
18.01.2022 KEIKI HAMERSLEY - Investigating stick insects With their twig-like bodies and quirky features, stick insects are entertaining creatures to watch and admire. The Hamersley kindy children have been fascinated by these little creatures, looking at them closely through magnifying glasses to investigate them up close. The children were able to point out the different features that make up their bodies and watch closely as they moved and climbed. As stick insects don't bite or sting they are ideal for examining in real life, and stimulate a curiosity to discover more about bugs and their importance to nature.
17.01.2022 KEIKI TRINITY - Exploring AUSLAN AUSLAN is short for Australian sign language, a language developed by, and for, Australians who are deaf or hearing impaired. It is a visual form of communication that uses hand, arm, and body movements to convey meaning. The Trinity Toddlers have been exploring Australian sign language over the past few weeks to enhance their communication.... The children show so much excitement and enthusiasm as Educator Kayla models the signs and says them verbally using a lot of repetition. The sessions have been scaffolded using the children’s current interests, focusing on colours, animals, and key words like eat, bed, nappy, and toilet to support the children with their daily needs. Early communication is crucial to feeling a sense of identity and belonging, and AUSLAN signing with the children is a wonderful way to promote these skills and provide children with the confidence to share their ideas and thinking.
16.01.2022 Our lovely cherry blossom tree at Keiki Edgewater is currently in bloom, these beautiful flowers are only displayed for a few short weeks per year. A number of the children have passed comment on the flowers so we decided to set up the art easel and paints outdoors for them to paint their own interpretation of it. Colour investigations, mixing and experimentation became another learning experience as we created brown and pink from our primary colour paints.
16.01.2022 Beautiful new trees have been planted at Keiki Glendale and the children have been putting a lot of effort into caring for them over the past couple of weeks. The mature trees provided a perfect opportunity to learn about respecting the environment and how to contribute to the world we live in. The new trees will add shade to what is already a naturally stunning bush setting. We look forward to watching them grow
16.01.2022 Last week, the children at Keiki Mindarie Keys welcomed their grandparents to celebrate Grandparents Day Tying in with book week, the children loved delving into the world of fairy tales and adventures as their grandparents read their favourite stories. It was a wonderful way to celebrate the role grandparents play in their grandchildren's lives
16.01.2022 Happy Father's Day to all the wonderful dads, father-figures, male caregivers and role models in our community!
15.01.2022 CELEBRATING EARTH DAY An important part of our Keiki philosophy is modelling practices of sustainability, care and love for the environment. We acknowledged Earth Day across our Early Learning services with a variety of experiences to deepen the children's knowledge and understanding about caring for the world we live in. We have read books about the environment, participated in sustainable crafts and arts activities, cared for our gardens and learnt about keeping our plane...t clean. Children have been painting our planet, creating our own vision of earth and what it is to us. We collected and used materials from nature in creative arts and play dough. Our everyday practice of using natural and recycled loose parts material within services also allows us to engage in imaginative play while extending our sustainability knowledge. Earth Day is a wonderful opportunity to extend our learning about reducing, reusing and recycling. Children collected rubbish and discussed how to protect our wildlife, created their own three-bin system and helped sort rubbish into different coloured bins. This encouraged the children to be mindful about leaving rubbish and taking responsibility with their own rubbish and belongings. Children also got hands-on in our outdoor environments, investigating the life cycle of plants by planting seeds, repotting succulents and caring for our gardens. Some of our children and educators even got into the spirit of Earth Day by dressing up in handmade, earth coloured or sustainable costumes!
14.01.2022 KEIKI NORTHSHORE - Looking after the Earth Today, 22nd April is Earth Day! This week, our OSHC children at Keiki Northshore have been discussing what Earth Day is about, caring for our environment and how we can minimise pollution. We all participated in a global warming activity using ice and showing what could happen if global warming continues. We have been learning how important oxygen is and that trees are a major part of oxygen production alongside many other benefi...ts. We then decided as a group to do our part and plant our own tree. Noticing it was time to replant some new sunflowers, we used the sunflower heads to dissect the seeds and then we will plant them once they have dried out. We then put the stems of the sunflowers in the compost so there was no waste! We also looked further into the benefits of our compost, worm farm and plants. To find out more about Earth Day, visit www.earthday.org
13.01.2022 Following on from book week, the children at Keiki Edgewater journeyed to the land of the wild things with the creation of a small world setting! As the book "Where the Wild Things Are" was read out loud by an educator, the children used the characters and setting to play out the story in their own way. The experience allowed children to creatively express themselves through a favourite story
12.01.2022 KEIKI TRINITY, ALKIMOS - Transition to School visit As part of our Three Plus School Readiness program at all services, we hold excursions to familiarise children with a school environment. Yesterday the Keiki Trinity children had a fabulous morning visiting the kindergarten class at John Butler Primary College! Children interacted with enthusiasm as we walked together remembering our road safety and spotting shops, cars and animals along the way. Once we arrived we had so...me time to investigate a big Kindy class room all by ourselves, this was so exciting and had everyone instantly exploring. The animal sequencing was a huge hit and had children recalling their knowledge about names and sounds they make. Other experiences of interest were the counting cars and dolls house which both supported the children’s creativity as they role played and confidence to explore a new surroundings. We shared morning recess with the big kindy children and our group was thoroughly involved talking about their snacks and what they enjoyed in the classroom. The teachers then invited us to a small group session where the big Kindy’s shared their Christmas story of the Gingerbread Man, our children joined in with actions and talked the whole way back about what happened. A big thank you to the wonderful teachers and staff at John Butler Primary College for hosting these transition visits and supporting our children on their new adventure.
12.01.2022 Yesterday afternoon Keiki Glendale had a visit from Shauna who is from the Noongar and Yamatji Tribe. She will be visiting every Keiki Early Learning service this week as a continuation of NAIDOC Week and our ongoing learning about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture. Firstly we sat in a yarning circle with Shauna and she shared with us what her ancestors did to eat and what types of clothing they wore including the double sided kangaroo skin. We also discussed som...e traditional objects she brought in including the boomerang. Shauna then read us the Dreamtime story about the Waakarl ‘The Rainbow Serpent’. We discussed how he used his body to make the land and his scars represent the clouds when it’s about to rain! To advocate for our yarning circle discussion we made some aboriginal flag coloured hand prints on plates discussing the representation of colours, Black representing the Ancestors and the people, Red representing the Earth and Yellow representing the Sun. To finish off the day we created a huge rainbow serpent collage for our service!
11.01.2022 The children at our Alkimos services celebrated Diwali, the Festival of Lights, on Friday last week with Educator Sharan who originates from India. Sharan set up beautiful Rangloi patterns made of coloured sand and rice which instantly captivated the Keiki Trinity children who put their hands and feet in the tray. The children manipulated the sand between their fingers, enjoying the bright colours and textures, you could see the children really thinking about the patterns a...nd colours they saw and touched. The children then created their own interpretations of Rangloi patterns using chalk and bright coloured play dough. Sharan wore her stunning traditional cloth to Keiki Northshore OHSC where the children participated in a kitchen experience to make yummy Indian bread and lovely clay candle holders. The children loved being in the kitchen, using their measuring and cooking skills and working together to create a delicious afternoon tea! It was wonderful to see the children develop their knowledge about the world around them and have the opportunity to enjoy the cultural celebration of Diwali.
11.01.2022 The Kindy children at Keiki Hamersley have continued on their journey of cultural inclusion and indigenous education. Using small off cuts of wood to represent people, the children used material to glue on clothing along with their own faces, creating a sense of belonging within the environment. Over the past few months the children have been on an educational journey learning about the Nyoongar language, symbols and their meanings along with the indigenous seasons.
11.01.2022 KEIKI TRINITY - Play and Learning to Socialise As part of their School Readiness journey, the kindy children at Keiki Trinity have been taking part in the PALS social skills program. This program teaches children from 3 to 6 years of age about greeting others, listening, sharing, taking turns, dealing with feelings of fear, sadness and anger, and solving problems. Learning social skills is an important foundation for school readiness, and like all skills, some children d...evelop them more easily than others. During early childhood and early school years, children start to make friends, learn to cooperate with others and begin to solve social problems. The PALS program teaches children constructive ways to solve problems that arise in social situations, through stories acted out by puppets, video scenarios, probe questions, role-play activities and songs. Over the past two weeks we have been supporting the children with turn taking, greeting others and recognising feelings. Educator Doireann first introduced the puppets Miss Kate, Jack and Anna, from ‘snow gum preschool’. Children were so enthusiastic and responsive to this small group session and quickly began to share their own ideas around turn taking and sharing with friends. Throughout the day, the children use new tools and strategies from the session and are overheard saying ‘what would Jack and Anna do?, for example when the children are disagreeing about toys. It has been wonderful seeing them respond so positively as they express the new skills they have learned.
11.01.2022 Early literacy is a strong focus for children of all ages at Keiki Early Learning. Some of our OSHC children at Keiki Mindarie Primary love relaxing after a long day at school with a good book. We have a whole range of books and materials waiting for them in our comfy reading area so they can follow their interests. We extend on these interests by participating in special events such as Book Week and the upcoming Australia Reads event which will take place from 1-12 November. If you would like to join in with the Australia Reads virtual festivities, check out https://australiareads.org.au/events/

07.01.2022 Yesterday the Koala children at Keiki Glendale went on a special excursion to the park in celebration of Outdoor Classroom Day. We had so much fun on the playground equipment including adventurous play on the flying fox, swings, see-saw and massive slide. We let off more steam running around the oval, kicking some balls and even played some games like duck duck goose. We also searched through the park around the trees for natural resources like nuts, leaves, bark and sticks. We ended the morning just before lunchtime and all sat under a shaded tree to share some morning tea. In the afternoon, we used the resources we had found on our nature hunt to create a lovely collage. We had such a fantastic day exploring our local community park and enjoying the beautiful spring weather!

05.01.2022 BOOK WEEK This week all Keiki Early Learning services have been encouraging children’s love of literacy and interest in reading by celebrating ‘Book Week’! Some of the experiences through the week included:... ‘Bear Hunt’ sensory trails Painting ‘Pete The Cat’s’ buttons using gumnuts Making hats, potions and superhero badges A Mad Hatter’s tea party Book week parades Running ‘Book Drives’ Storytelling throughout the week Decorating our own library bags Discussing what a library is and what we do there Creating our very own stories Making 'Wombat Stew' Searching for the Green Sheep And of course, we’ve seen lots of children and educators having fun as they dressed up as their favourite book characters!
05.01.2022 KEIKI TRINITY - Exploring our natural environment The Trinity babies have been absolutely loving their outside environment so to build on this interest, educators have created simple invitations to play in nature trays. This gives the babies time and space to investigate, be curious and discover the world around them at their own pace. Our youngest learners have had a wonderful time exploring the garden beds and getting hands on in the sensory aspect of mud play. We found ...a few wiggly worms hiding in the gardens and the children showed delight to hold these, deepening the connection between them and the world around us. We found flowers that instantly sparked wonder as we smelled them, and dried leaves make the most interesting sound when crunched in little hands. Nature gives us so many opportunities to appreciate the beauty of the world around us, inspiring creativity and discovery. While investigating their environment, the babies start to ask their own questions about the world and find answers by touching, smelling, seeing and hearing
04.01.2022 Last week children across all services learnt about personal safety and wellbeing, to coincide with National Child Protection Week. Our kindy children at Keiki Glendale, Hamersley focused on: Who are safe people to talk to? What feelings we feel when we are in safe and unsafe situations? What do the feelings feel like in our bodies?... The children had whole group discussions, showed us their emotions and created a book about what their feelings look like to them. For a great list of resources to help teach children protective behaviours, visit https://www.maggiedent.com//top-tips-resources-teach-chil/
04.01.2022 KEIKI MINDARIE PRIMARY - Making friends Families often tell us they are concerned about their child being able to make friends easily when they start school. Learning to socialise is an important skill that can take some time for children to master! Enrolling in our Three Plus School Readiness program helps children to develop important skills such as self-regulation, resilience and independence. Our experienced educators help develop children's emotional intelligence throu...gh play by encouraging sharing and turn-taking, teamwork, role-playing about conflict resolution and talking about kindness and emotions as a group. Like all skills, children develop socially and emotionally at their own pace. We love watching friendships blossom amongst children as they engage in their own world of play, creating stories and playing out scenarios together. Places are now available in our unique Three Plus program at Keiki Mindarie Primary. To find out more, visit https://keikiearlylearning.com.au/book-a-tour/
03.01.2022 KEIKI HAMERSLEY - Letting our feet do the discovering Our Hamersley toddlers have been using their feet to experience the sense of touch this week with a tactile obstacle course. One by one the children walked along the path, stepping on the objects and experiencing the sensations of soft, spiky, spongey and rough. At the end of the path was a tray of wet paint which, when the children stepped in it, it coated their feet and left footprints on paper!... The children really enjoyed experiencing the different textures under their feet which helps them to build pathways in their brain as they process the feeling connected to the objects.
03.01.2022 The kindy children at Keiki Trinity have been thoroughly enjoying a pretend laundry experience and making use of the warm weather this week They have been busy washing the baby clothes, squeezing them out and pegging them on the pretend washing line. It was so sweet to watch! The children did every step of the process by themselves and needed only a little help from their educator (when adding the bubbles). They enjoyed it so much and different groups of children visited th...e experience throughout the morning. Some of the conversations overheard were: You’ve got to wash it I’m washing I did it look It’s all clean now I’m all done, look I’m cleaning This experience helped to develop the children’s self help skills and independence. An imaginative play washing line is also so simple to put together but yet so effective for kids to pretend, engage and make sense of their world. This enables them to practise and experiment with the various skills they will take into adulthood.
02.01.2022 KEIKI IN THE NEWS Our gym program at Keiki Edgewater has been a big hit with the kindy children, who love heading to iamFIT Training on Fridays to practice their skills further. It has been wonderful to see their confidence and abilities improving with each week!
02.01.2022 KEIKI MINDARIE KEYS It has been a month of pouring, splashing and bubble making at Mindarie Keys as the babies experimented and explored lots of water play activities When bubbles were added to the water the children became fascinated by the look and texture change to the water and loved using their hands, feet and faces to explore and create the bubbles.... In one water play activity, we decided to have a coloured foam party which the children loved. The foam was touched, moulded, thrown and even used to make beards and hats! It was a fun sensory experience for the children to explore textures and express their creativity by creating beards and hats!
02.01.2022 This time of year is always busy within our Three Plus program as we prepare children to graduate to ‘big school’ As part of the preparations, Kindy Information Evenings are held at Keiki Early Learning services to help inform families about what to expect, how to help prepare your child for school and how our School Readiness program works in conjunction with school and teachers to help facilitate a smooth transition. Last week we held an information session at Keiki Edgewater, where we were joined by wonderful early years school teacher Jasmin. We are now busily preparing for our special Kindy Graduation ceremonies and look forward to being part of the school readiness journey with all our kindy families for the rest of 2020!
02.01.2022 Over the past weeks the babies at Keiki Mindarie Keys have loved exploring the ocean and the animals that live within it, participating in activities guided by their interest This week the babies had a swell time exploring a jumbo sensory bag filled with water and sponge figurines of fish, jelly fish and star fish. They investigated the sensory bag with their whole bodies, developing their sensory capabilities and broadening their understanding of the world in which they live. They were so fascinated as they explored the ocean creatures and the sensation of the water beneath them.
02.01.2022 We had to share this with you, as it’s so close to our heart and philosophy at Keiki.
02.01.2022 KEIKI MINDARIE KEYS - Investigating outer space Today, 12 April, is the United Nations’ International Day of Human Space Flight! A celebration of the exciting era of space that we live in and the importance of science and technology to improve life on earth. At Keiki Mindarie Keys the toddlers have shown a great interest in space and been doing lots of investigation into our amazing universe. They have been participating in lots of activities to follow this interest such... as looking at space books and creating their very own galaxies, rocket ships and stars. Learning about outer space helps children to appreciate and understand how precious planet earth is and the need for us to take very good care of it Find out more about the United Nations’ International Day of Human Space Flight at https://www.un.org/en/observances/human-spaceflight-day
01.01.2022 KEIKI HAMERSLEY - Ice Painting The Hamersley toddlers have been participating in lots of different activities to explore their senses over the past couple of weeks. Their latest 'cool' activity was investigating beautiful flowers and using them as inspiration to paint ice. Using paint brushes dipped in coloured water, they painted a giant ice block while it slowly melted in the blazing sunshine. The children engaged their sense of touch, sight and smell as they developed their knowledge on colours. They had a lot of fun while they socialised with their peers, all joining in to paint their part of the ice cube and watch as the colours melted together.
