25.01.2022 Traditionally throughout Djilba season, the main sources of food included many land based grazing animals. The animals included the Yongar, the Waitj and the Koomal. Today at Keiki Hamersley, we learnt a few of the Australian animals names in Nyoongar. These included: Kangaroo- yonga Possum- Koomal... Emu- Waitj Magpie- Koolbardi Willy wagtail- Djidi djidi Wattle bird- chuckaluck. We also learn that grass trees are called Balga trees. We then created huts and shelters out of small blocks and large blocks and added some Aussie animals into the experience. As the days start to warm up, we will start to see and hear the first of the newborn animals. The woodland birds will still be nest bound, hence the swooping behaviour of the Koolbardi, the djidi Djidi and the chuck-a-luck. As the season progresses, we will start to see the flower stalks of the Balga trees in preparation for the coming Kambarang season. #noongarboodja #languagelearning #learnthroughplay #earlyyears #childcareperth

24.01.2022 Just arrived at Keiki Early Learning! Handmade locally by founding owner Angela, these lovely sensory tags for babies provide different colours, patterns and textures designed to stimulate little minds.

24.01.2022 The Keiki Northshore children went on a lovely excursion to Bunnings in August, to buy some native wildflowers that grow and bloom during the Noongar season Djilba. The children will be planting within each season as a way to show respect, learn about and represent Aboriginal culture. This experience covered many learning aspects from going out into our community where we build a sense of belonging and engaging in life skills from reading signs, choosing the plants, scanning ...the codes and paying. We also reinforced safety skills in the bus and when out in the community around people and vehicles by discussing and creating our own risk assessment. The girls thoroughly enjoyed this experience, its so nice to see them building on their emotional wellbeing with many smiles, giggles holding each others hands and building those connections with one another. 24.01.2022 KEIKI TRINITY - Exploring our natural environment The Trinity babies have been absolutely loving their outside environment so to build on this interest, educators have created simple invitations to play in nature trays. This gives the babies time and space to investigate, be curious and discover the world around them at their own pace. Our youngest learners have had a wonderful time exploring the garden beds and getting hands on in the sensory aspect of mud play. We found ...a few wiggly worms hiding in the gardens and the children showed delight to hold these, deepening the connection between them and the world around us. We found flowers that instantly sparked wonder as we smelled them, and dried leaves make the most interesting sound when crunched in little hands. Nature gives us so many opportunities to appreciate the beauty of the world around us, inspiring creativity and discovery. While investigating their environment, the babies start to ask their own questions about the world and find answers by touching, smelling, seeing and hearing

21.01.2022 KEIKI HAMERSLEY - Letting our feet do the discovering Our Hamersley toddlers have been using their feet to experience the sense of touch this week with a tactile obstacle course. One by one the children walked along the path, stepping on the objects and experiencing the sensations of soft, spiky, spongey and rough. At the end of the path was a tray of wet paint which, when the children stepped in it, it coated their feet and left footprints on paper!... The children really enjoyed experiencing the different textures under their feet which helps them to build pathways in their brain as they process the feeling connected to the objects.

20.01.2022 Today marks the end of NAIDOC Week 2020, however our journey continues into next week and beyond as we celebrate and embed Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture within our services. In the meantime, we leave you with this adorable video of one of our toddlers and educators at Keiki Hamersley, singing Wanjoo (The Welcome Song) and signing together in Auslan.

20.01.2022 KEIKI HAMERSLEY - Ice Painting The Hamersley toddlers have been participating in lots of different activities to explore their senses over the past couple of weeks. Their latest 'cool' activity was investigating beautiful flowers and using them as inspiration to paint ice. Using paint brushes dipped in coloured water, they painted a giant ice block while it slowly melted in the blazing sunshine. The children engaged their sense of touch, sight and smell as they developed their knowledge on colours. They had a lot of fun while they socialised with their peers, all joining in to paint their part of the ice cube and watch as the colours melted together.

19.01.2022 KEIKI MINDARIE KEYS It has been a month of pouring, splashing and bubble making at Mindarie Keys as the babies experimented and explored lots of water play activities When bubbles were added to the water the children became fascinated by the look and texture change to the water and loved using their hands, feet and faces to explore and create the bubbles.... In one water play activity, we decided to have a coloured foam party which the children loved. The foam was touched, moulded, thrown and even used to make beards and hats! It was a fun sensory experience for the children to explore textures and express their creativity by creating beards and hats!

18.01.2022 KEIKI TRINITY - Play and Learning to Socialise As part of their School Readiness journey, the kindy children at Keiki Trinity have been taking part in the PALS social skills program. This program teaches children from 3 to 6 years of age about greeting others, listening, sharing, taking turns, dealing with feelings of fear, sadness and anger, and solving problems. Learning social skills is an important foundation for school readiness, and like all skills, some children d...evelop them more easily than others. During early childhood and early school years, children start to make friends, learn to cooperate with others and begin to solve social problems. The PALS program teaches children constructive ways to solve problems that arise in social situations, through stories acted out by puppets, video scenarios, probe questions, role-play activities and songs. Over the past two weeks we have been supporting the children with turn taking, greeting others and recognising feelings. Educator Doireann first introduced the puppets Miss Kate, Jack and Anna, from ‘snow gum preschool’. Children were so enthusiastic and responsive to this small group session and quickly began to share their own ideas around turn taking and sharing with friends. Throughout the day, the children use new tools and strategies from the session and are overheard saying ‘what would Jack and Anna do?, for example when the children are disagreeing about toys. It has been wonderful seeing them respond so positively as they express the new skills they have learned.

17.01.2022 If you are looking for something exciting to do this weekend. Why don't you head to Dino-Land at Yagan Square.

17.01.2022 KEIKI NORTHSHORE - Looking after the Earth Today, 22nd April is Earth Day! This week, our OSHC children at Keiki Northshore have been discussing what Earth Day is about, caring for our environment and how we can minimise pollution. We all participated in a global warming activity using ice and showing what could happen if global warming continues. We have been learning how important oxygen is and that trees are a major part of oxygen production alongside many other benefi...ts. We then decided as a group to do our part and plant our own tree. Noticing it was time to replant some new sunflowers, we used the sunflower heads to dissect the seeds and then we will plant them once they have dried out. We then put the stems of the sunflowers in the compost so there was no waste! We also looked further into the benefits of our compost, worm farm and plants. To find out more about Earth Day, visit www.earthday.org

16.01.2022 Our Community Libraries are built in as a key feature in each service. We are passionate about early literacy and fostering a love of reading at an early age. Children love selecting new books to discover as part of their Keiki day! Thank you to our lovely Edgewater families who have recently donated books to contribute to our library. #earlyyears #earlyliteracy #learnthroughreading #childcareperth #keikicute

16.01.2022 Understanding the National Quality Framework (NQF) and how it guides the ways educators work and interact with children can be valuable for parents and families. Click on the link below to view a simple guide to the NQF and the seven quality areas of the National Quality Standards.

16.01.2022 CELEBRATING EARTH DAY An important part of our Keiki philosophy is modelling practices of sustainability, care and love for the environment. We acknowledged Earth Day across our Early Learning services with a variety of experiences to deepen the children's knowledge and understanding about caring for the world we live in. We have read books about the environment, participated in sustainable crafts and arts activities, cared for our gardens and learnt about keeping our plane...t clean. Children have been painting our planet, creating our own vision of earth and what it is to us. We collected and used materials from nature in creative arts and play dough. Our everyday practice of using natural and recycled loose parts material within services also allows us to engage in imaginative play while extending our sustainability knowledge. Earth Day is a wonderful opportunity to extend our learning about reducing, reusing and recycling. Children collected rubbish and discussed how to protect our wildlife, created their own three-bin system and helped sort rubbish into different coloured bins. This encouraged the children to be mindful about leaving rubbish and taking responsibility with their own rubbish and belongings. Children also got hands-on in our outdoor environments, investigating the life cycle of plants by planting seeds, repotting succulents and caring for our gardens. Some of our children and educators even got into the spirit of Earth Day by dressing up in handmade, earth coloured or sustainable costumes!

15.01.2022 Teaching your child life skills is not only important for self-care and sufficiency - it also allows them to feel empowered. You can read more from Maggie Dent here https://www.maggiedent.com//giving-kids-greatest-gift-lif/

13.01.2022 KEIKI CREW On the weekend, we celebrated our Keiki long service Educators with a fabulous high tea at C Restaurant in celebration of more than five years of service. Thank you for your hard work, dedication and commitment, we appreciate you so very much!

12.01.2022 This week we have been celebrating Science Week at Keiki Mindarie Keys! The Baby Joeys have had an amazing time exploring light and oceans. We thoroughly enjoyed exploring the ice experience early in the week, as the babies made ocean layers using blue water, ice, and ocean animals. The wonderful giggles that could be heard from the babies garden made everyone in the service smile. Their faces lit up as they touched the cold ice and moved the animals around on top of it. Lig...ht has been another huge focus for the babies, as they built an exciting light tunnel and introduced a new light box into their environment. The babies have loved exploring the lights and shadows created and the dazzling shapes made. The Toddler Wombats have had a wonderful time exploring cause and effect during Science Week. Early in the week they made their very own lava lamp, as they combined oil and water to make fascinating bubbles and layers. This really sparked the childrens imagination, as they loved being a part of the investigation process and experimenting with all the liquids. Science experiments were such a huge hit with the children that they took part in a Volcano Experience, where they watched with glee as they mixed bicarbonate soda and vinegar and watched it erupt! The Kindy Kookaburras have had a wonderful time exploring the theme of Deep Blue this week. We made our very own ocean play dough and got creative sticking pom poms, pebbles, and shells into it to construct underwater animals and landscapes. We discussed the topic of Save the Ocean and made sure we knew exactly where to put our rubbish so that it does not end up in the sea with all the animals. To reinforce this learning, we made an ocean sensory tub using jelly, sand and shells and including some rubbish that needed to be cleared. The children used pegs to develop their fine motor movement and remove the plastic from the jelly ocean to save the animals. We've had so much fun celebrating Science Week! All these exciting activities enabled the children to explore and experiment with new textures and sensory experiences, whilst also developing their understanding of the world around them.

11.01.2022 KEIKI MINDARIE PRIMARY - All things road safety The children at Mindarie Primary Three Plus have been exploring what safety means and ways in which they can keep themselves and others safe. This week the focus has been on road safety. Inspired by their visit to the school traffic warden last month, the children created their own pedestrian crossing, traffic lights and stop signs using recycled cardboard and paint. They loved the hands-on experience of creating the signs ...which also gave them a better understanding of what the colours and shapes mean. The children have also been playing the red and green game using coloured rackets to learn that red means stop and green means go The game was a lot of fun, but also helps the children to understand how colours communicate what we should do when we are crossing the road, and how they can help keep us safe.

11.01.2022 KEIKI TRINITY, ALKIMOS - Transition to School visit As part of our Three Plus School Readiness program at all services, we hold excursions to familiarise children with a school environment. Yesterday the Keiki Trinity children had a fabulous morning visiting the kindergarten class at John Butler Primary College! Children interacted with enthusiasm as we walked together remembering our road safety and spotting shops, cars and animals along the way. Once we arrived we had so...me time to investigate a big Kindy class room all by ourselves, this was so exciting and had everyone instantly exploring. The animal sequencing was a huge hit and had children recalling their knowledge about names and sounds they make. Other experiences of interest were the counting cars and dolls house which both supported the children’s creativity as they role played and confidence to explore a new surroundings. We shared morning recess with the big kindy children and our group was thoroughly involved talking about their snacks and what they enjoyed in the classroom. The teachers then invited us to a small group session where the big Kindy’s shared their Christmas story of the Gingerbread Man, our children joined in with actions and talked the whole way back about what happened. A big thank you to the wonderful teachers and staff at John Butler Primary College for hosting these transition visits and supporting our children on their new adventure.

11.01.2022 KEIKI MINDARIE KEYS - Ball drop Here's a great activity for your leftover carboard boxes - make a ball drop! The babies at Mindarie Keys have been working on their fine motor development and hand-eye coordination with a homemade ball drop game. Using recycled cardboard, the holes were cut out and coloured, then stuck to the wall. The children had so much fun putting their balls through the holes and watching as they dropped to the floor.

Children dressed up and enjoyed some superhero-themed activities through the day too. Our Kindy super heroes worked together to rescue the bugs from the spiderweb (sticky tape). They used their fine motor skills to manoeuvre the tongs through the sticky web without getting trapped! Practising with the tongs will also aid in our self help skills when serving at mealtimes!

10.01.2022 The children at Keiki Northshore enjoyed a fantastic visit from Trinity Village Dental last week. This incursion was organised due to the childrens curious question what are teeth made out of?. We had a great and interactive group discussion about how to keep our teeth healthy by choosing what food to eat, how sugar makes holes in your teeth, when and how to brush your teeth and the three layers that our teeth are made up of. Trinity Village Dental

09.01.2022 The children at Keiki Northshore enjoyed a bush walk on Thursday. The children were exploring the native plants blooming and enjoying the surrounding view. The children noticed some daisies were closed and learnt that they were closed due to the sun going down, when the sun rises tomorrow they will open up towards the sun. After our walk we enjoyed drawing our own interpretation of the golden wattle.

08.01.2022 The children at our Alkimos services celebrated Diwali, the Festival of Lights, on Friday last week with Educator Sharan who originates from India. Sharan set up beautiful Rangloi patterns made of coloured sand and rice which instantly captivated the Keiki Trinity children who put their hands and feet in the tray. The children manipulated the sand between their fingers, enjoying the bright colours and textures, you could see the children really thinking about the patterns a...nd colours they saw and touched. The children then created their own interpretations of Rangloi patterns using chalk and bright coloured play dough. Sharan wore her stunning traditional cloth to Keiki Northshore OHSC where the children participated in a kitchen experience to make yummy Indian bread and lovely clay candle holders. The children loved being in the kitchen, using their measuring and cooking skills and working together to create a delicious afternoon tea! It was wonderful to see the children develop their knowledge about the world around them and have the opportunity to enjoy the cultural celebration of Diwali.

08.01.2022 KEIKI HAMERSLEY - Investigating stick insects With their twig-like bodies and quirky features, stick insects are entertaining creatures to watch and admire. The Hamersley kindy children have been fascinated by these little creatures, looking at them closely through magnifying glasses to investigate them up close. The children were able to point out the different features that make up their bodies and watch closely as they moved and climbed. As stick insects don't bite or sting they are ideal for examining in real life, and stimulate a curiosity to discover more about bugs and their importance to nature.

08.01.2022 Last week children across all services learnt about personal safety and wellbeing, to coincide with National Child Protection Week. Our kindy children at Keiki Glendale, Hamersley focused on: Who are safe people to talk to? What feelings we feel when we are in safe and unsafe situations? What do the feelings feel like in our bodies?... The children had whole group discussions, showed us their emotions and created a book about what their feelings look like to them. For a great list of resources to help teach children protective behaviours, visit https://www.maggiedent.com//top-tips-resources-teach-chil/

08.01.2022 We had a cute visitor to Keiki Glendale this week, when one of our children bought in a baby rabbit! The children absolutely loved caring for the bunny for the day with lots of love, cuddles and tasty rabbit food. We even made it a bowl of water to drink from. This was a lovely opportunity for the children to learn and develop responsibility, empathy, social interaction and turn taking, and the importance of caring for the environment.

06.01.2022 KEIKI MINDARIE KEYS - Kindy School Excursion On Friday morning the Mindarie Keys children had an amazing visit to the beautiful Kindy block at Kinross Primary School! A handful of children took a trip on the minibus to to enjoy an hour of fun and discovery, as they explored their Kindy classrooms for next year. The children were lucky enough to join the class outside for a healthy snack, listen to a wonderful Christmas story and take part in some of the amazing activities on... offer, including colouring, small world play and a festive home corner environment. Some of the children even met their new teachers for next year. This was an exciting opportunity for the children to develop their sense of belonging, as revisiting their new school will help smooth their transition next year, and it was a great chance for our service to continue building a relationship with such a fantastic school within the community! Thank you for having us Kinross Primary School

Using small off cuts of wood to represent people, the children used material to glue on clothing along with their own faces, creating a sense of belonging within the environment. Over the past few months the children have been on an educational journey learning about the Nyoongar language, symbols and their meanings along with the indigenous seasons.

05.01.2022 We have had an interest in lavender and wild flowers at Keiki Edgewater, as one of the children regularly arrives in the morning with a beautiful smelling sprig of lavender!Yesterday we provided all the ingredients already measured out for the kindy children to make lavender play dough by themselves with verbal cues.

05.01.2022 KEIKI MINDARIE PRIMARY - Making friends Families often tell us they are concerned about their child being able to make friends easily when they start school. Learning to socialise is an important skill that can take some time for children to master! Enrolling in our Three Plus School Readiness program helps children to develop important skills such as self-regulation, resilience and independence. Our experienced educators help develop children's emotional intelligence throu...gh play by encouraging sharing and turn-taking, teamwork, role-playing about conflict resolution and talking about kindness and emotions as a group. Like all skills, children develop socially and emotionally at their own pace. We love watching friendships blossom amongst children as they engage in their own world of play, creating stories and playing out scenarios together. Places are now available in our unique Three Plus program at Keiki Mindarie Primary. To find out more, visit https://keikiearlylearning.com.au/book-a-tour/

04.01.2022 KEIKI TRINITY - Exploring AUSLAN AUSLAN is short for Australian sign language, a language developed by, and for, Australians who are deaf or hearing impaired. It is a visual form of communication that uses hand, arm, and body movements to convey meaning. The Trinity Toddlers have been exploring Australian sign language over the past few weeks to enhance their communication.... The children show so much excitement and enthusiasm as Educator Kayla models the signs and says them verbally using a lot of repetition. The sessions have been scaffolded using the children’s current interests, focusing on colours, animals, and key words like eat, bed, nappy, and toilet to support the children with their daily needs. Early communication is crucial to feeling a sense of identity and belonging, and AUSLAN signing with the children is a wonderful way to promote these skills and provide children with the confidence to share their ideas and thinking.

04.01.2022 Yesterday afternoon Keiki Glendale had a visit from Shauna who is from the Noongar and Yamatji Tribe. She will be visiting every Keiki Early Learning service this week as a continuation of NAIDOC Week and our ongoing learning about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture. Firstly we sat in a yarning circle with Shauna and she shared with us what her ancestors did to eat and what types of clothing they wore including the double sided kangaroo skin. We also discussed som...e traditional objects she brought in including the boomerang. Shauna then read us the Dreamtime story about the Waakarl ‘The Rainbow Serpent’. We discussed how he used his body to make the land and his scars represent the clouds when it’s about to rain! To advocate for our yarning circle discussion we made some aboriginal flag coloured hand prints on plates discussing the representation of colours, Black representing the Ancestors and the people, Red representing the Earth and Yellow representing the Sun. To finish off the day we created a huge rainbow serpent collage for our service!

04.01.2022 NAIDOC WEEK 2020 Always Was, Always Will Be Learning about Indigenous culture is a key focus of our curriculum throughout the year and NAIDOC Week is a fantastic opportunity to celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history, culture and customs across all of our Keiki Early Learning services. This week at Keiki Mindarie Keys, babies have enjoyed developing their creativity through rock painting and exploring ‘Dreamtime Stories’ all about how the birds got... their colours, becoming literacy users in their play. In the Toddler Room the children extended their motor skills and imaginative play by embracing nature and using plant loose parts to create beautiful painted artwork and their own play dough echidnas, based on the tale of ‘The Echidna and the Shade Tree’. Kindy children thoroughly enjoyed taking part in yarning circles, exploring their senses with lemon myrtle play dough and developing their understanding of the world by investigating an Australian animal small world environment. At Keiki Trinity, children have been exploring dream time stories, creating group art and exploring Aboriginal symbols, alongside our daily Acknowledgement to Country and Wanjoo (Welcome Song) ritual. The children have enjoyed wonderful experiences with their friends and educators as part of NAIDOC Week, broadening their awareness of Indigenous culture and embracing the history and wildlife of the land around them.

04.01.2022 The children (and fish) are loving the latest updates in the toddler room at Keiki Mindarie Keys! It's just one of many intentional calming spaces created throughout the service for engaged learning and play.

03.01.2022 Our Keiki Glendale children had a lot of fun getting into the kitchen to make pancakes last week Cooking is such a fantastic experience for young children as it helps to introduce early maths and science concepts as well as social skills and working together. After taking turns to measure, pour and mix the ingredients the children waited patiently for the pancakes to cook. The pancakes made a delicious addition to our afternoon tea fruit platter, yum!

03.01.2022 To celebrate our wonderful families, Keiki Trinity and Northshore held a meet up at the local park in Shorehaven last Saturday. Children and their families spent the morning playing, exploring, chatting and making new friends. Children were so excited to see their little friends at the park, climbing, jumping and investigating with all the amazing experiences the park has to offer. It was so lovely to see all the families making new connections, building friendships and arran...ging their own catch ups. Parents watched in awe as their children interacted together showcasing the strong bonds they have and the pure joy they bring to each others lives. Educators from both services hosted this event, deepening the connection between home and childcare and sharing many laughs with both the parents and the children. We cant wait for the next family meet up and a new park to explore. See more

03.01.2022 The children at Keiki Trinity participated in some amazing learning experiences as part of National Science Week celebrations, hypothesising, experimenting, problem solving and investigating as they explored the world around them. Educators planned a range of exciting experiences following childrens current interests and providing opportunities to scaffold and provoke thinking. Children in the Babies room had fun with bubbles, blowing them through straws, clapping them with... their hands and chasing and catching them as they flew around the gardens. Puffy paint saw our youngest learners getting messy as they used their hands to investigate, get creative and watch in wonder as they made marks. Toddlers created with fizzing volcanos with bicarb and vinegar; this experiment always captures interest. Children came together, discussed what they could see and revisited this learning several times using different colours and containers, sharing and developing their knowledge and understanding. Making their own paints using natural resources such as soil, flowers and sand had educators and children becoming co-learners. Kindy children extended their learning around how plants grow and watched coloured water absorb into celery and flowers. We planted seeds into recycled CD cases so we can observe the roots growing, these will then be planted into our garden beds. Coloured water was made using old markers, developing childrens knowledge around sustainability. Colour mixing was also a huge hit, we combined our interest with sensory play and colours together. Educators offered shaving foam and our coloured water for the children to investigate with, children were amazed at mixing and creating their own colours. Children from the whole service made their own lava lamps, watching the oil bubbles move around the jars was fascinating and sparked curiosity and wonder with even our youngest learners. The children talked about science week at home some bringing in items to experiment with, strengthening the connections between home and day care. The excitement was real every day with children showing increasing curiosity, awe and wonder in their environments.

02.01.2022 Last weekend we had a wonderful time at Eden Beach park celebrating Fathers Day with our Keiki Mindarie Keys families. We had a fantastic turn out and enjoyed eating blueberry muffins, climbing on the ropes, sliding down the slides and drinking babycinos together!

02.01.2022 Finding little moments of joy in every day is so important for childrens development you can read more from Dr Mona Delahooke here https://monadelahooke.com/1119-2/
