20.01.2022 The children at our Alkimos services celebrated Diwali, the Festival of Lights, on Friday last week with Educator Sharan who originates from India. Sharan set up beautiful Rangloi patterns made of coloured sand and rice which instantly captivated the Keiki Trinity children who put their hands and feet in the tray. The children manipulated the sand between their fingers, enjoying the bright colours and textures, you could see the children really thinking about the patterns a...nd colours they saw and touched. The children then created their own interpretations of Rangloi patterns using chalk and bright coloured play dough. Sharan wore her stunning traditional cloth to Keiki Northshore OHSC where the children participated in a kitchen experience to make yummy Indian bread and lovely clay candle holders. The children loved being in the kitchen, using their measuring and cooking skills and working together to create a delicious afternoon tea! It was wonderful to see the children develop their knowledge about the world around them and have the opportunity to enjoy the cultural celebration of Diwali.

19.01.2022 Today marks the end of NAIDOC Week 2020, however our journey continues into next week and beyond as we celebrate and embed Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture within our services. In the meantime, we leave you with this adorable video of one of our toddlers and educators at Keiki Hamersley, singing Wanjoo (The Welcome Song) and signing together in Auslan.

16.01.2022 Immersing ourselves in the natural environment and embracing outdoor learning is deeply entrenched in our philosophy at Keiki Early Learning. Children across all services had a wonderful day celebrating this core value as part of Outdoor Classroom Day last Friday. At Keiki Mindarie Keys, the Toddlers and Babies had a wonderfully relaxing time on their beds outside in the garden, as they enjoyed falling asleep to the sounds of birds singing and leaves rustling. The Kindy ch...ildren were thoroughly engaged in nature cutting activities, as they investigated the plants in their garden and further developed their fine motor skills in the process. They also had a great time engaging in the ‘Learning Zone’ on our decking, exploring numbers, letters and the seasons, which was a lovely opportunity to be repeated again on a more regular basis. Our Keiki Mindarie Primary Three Plus children spent time outdoors learning about what goes in the compost bin, using fine motor skills to grab leftover fruit and discussing what the compost can be used for. Gross motor skills were used in a large group parachute activity which also encouraged turn taking and listening skills. The newly decorated yarning circle was used for a mat session to acknowledge the country where we live and sing traditional Torres Strait islander children’s folk song ''Taba Naba'' using tapping sticks. Water play was also a huge hit with lots of filling, pouring, floating and sinking, introducing early science and maths. The Mindarie children across both services had a wonderful day, enjoying the outdoors and appreciating and discovering the abundance of nature around them!

15.01.2022 Yesterday afternoon Keiki Glendale had a visit from Shauna who is from the Noongar and Yamatji Tribe. She will be visiting every Keiki Early Learning service this week as a continuation of NAIDOC Week and our ongoing learning about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture. Firstly we sat in a yarning circle with Shauna and she shared with us what her ancestors did to eat and what types of clothing they wore including the double sided kangaroo skin. We also discussed som...e traditional objects she brought in including the boomerang. Shauna then read us the Dreamtime story about the Waakarl ‘The Rainbow Serpent’. We discussed how he used his body to make the land and his scars represent the clouds when it’s about to rain! To advocate for our yarning circle discussion we made some aboriginal flag coloured hand prints on plates discussing the representation of colours, Black representing the Ancestors and the people, Red representing the Earth and Yellow representing the Sun. To finish off the day we created a huge rainbow serpent collage for our service!

12.01.2022 At the beginning of the month, our newly formed Keiki Dad’s Group enjoyed a fun and relaxing afternoon at The Breakwater, Hillary’s. Keiki Dads Group is a member-run initiative supported by Keiki Early Learning and The Fathering Project, a not-for-profit organisation designed to inspire, equip and encourage father-figures to be the best they can be. Dad’s groups provide a safe, inclusive and positive environment where fathers, father-figures and male role models can learn, share, grow and connect with each other and their children. Keiki Dad's Group will be planning a Dads and Kids event in January 2021, if you would like to get involved or learn more, visit https://thefatheringproject.org//keiki-early-learning-ce/

10.01.2022 KEIKI CREW On the weekend, we celebrated our Keiki long service Educators with a fabulous high tea at C Restaurant in celebration of more than five years of service. Thank you for your hard work, dedication and commitment, we appreciate you so very much!

06.01.2022 Our Keiki Glendale children had a lot of fun getting into the kitchen to make pancakes last week Cooking is such a fantastic experience for young children as it helps to introduce early maths and science concepts as well as social skills and working together. After taking turns to measure, pour and mix the ingredients the children waited patiently for the pancakes to cook. The pancakes made a delicious addition to our afternoon tea fruit platter, yum!

06.01.2022 NAIDOC WEEK 2020 Always Was, Always Will Be Learning about Indigenous culture is a key focus of our curriculum throughout the year and NAIDOC Week is a fantastic opportunity to celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history, culture and customs across all of our Keiki Early Learning services. This week at Keiki Mindarie Keys, babies have enjoyed developing their creativity through rock painting and exploring ‘Dreamtime Stories’ all about how the birds got... their colours, becoming literacy users in their play. In the Toddler Room the children extended their motor skills and imaginative play by embracing nature and using plant loose parts to create beautiful painted artwork and their own play dough echidnas, based on the tale of ‘The Echidna and the Shade Tree’. Kindy children thoroughly enjoyed taking part in yarning circles, exploring their senses with lemon myrtle play dough and developing their understanding of the world by investigating an Australian animal small world environment. At Keiki Trinity, children have been exploring dream time stories, creating group art and exploring Aboriginal symbols, alongside our daily Acknowledgement to Country and Wanjoo (Welcome Song) ritual. The children have enjoyed wonderful experiences with their friends and educators as part of NAIDOC Week, broadening their awareness of Indigenous culture and embracing the history and wildlife of the land around them.

03.01.2022 Children and educators across our services observed a minute of silence this morning to honour those who have served and fallen in the line of duty. ''At the going down of the sun and in the morning, we will remember them.'' Lest we forget.
