18.01.2022 Such sad news! My sincere condolences to Ken Wittstock’s family on his passing. My thoughts are also with Dave Friend a long-time friend of his and to all the SA JKA instructors who were so close to him. I remember Ken Sensei as a very kind and helpful man who could really switch on when he stepped onto the dojo floor. My earliest memory of him was in 1969 when we both reached the finals of our respective events in the South African JKA kumite championship at Henley-on-Klip..., myself in the under 18 and Ken Sensei in the men’s open event. We warmed up in the same room and I was in awe watching him, he was something special. In 1973 Ken Sensei finished joint 3rd with Tanaka Sensei in the JKA World championships. He beat Y.Osaka in the quarter finals and lost against A.Isaka in the semi finals. A unique achievement. In 1980 he was the coach of the SA JKA kumite team which was selected to fight the visiting Japanese team. I was lucky to be a member of the team. In 1997 it was an honour to be invited to teach in Germany with him and Stan Schmidt Sensei. He was very well respected and had many fans amongst the German karateka. They called our seminar the South African Safari training. RIP Ken Sensei! See more

06.01.2022 It has been brought to my attention that there have been posts on Facebook recently criticizing JKA Japan for not acknowledging Stan Schmidt Sensei’s passing. I would like to correct this inaccuracy. I have received emails from Ueki Shuseki Shihan, Oishi, Ogura, Yano, Naka and Okuma Sensei’s. They have all passed their condolences on to me personally, as well as the Schmidt family. At the Shihankai meeting on Sunday 13th of October, as well as at Ueki Sensei’s celebration party, a minute of silence was held in remembrance of Stan Sensei. On behalf of myself and the rest of the family, we would like to sincerely thank JKA Japan; we appreciate all that you have done.
