23.01.2022 This is the location where I photographed the lovely Julie Tengdahl @tengdahlaustralia for our submission to the @brisbaneportraitprize . . I chose this spot particularly for the type of bush it was . A piece of the Brisbane bush, hardy, slightly sparse with lots of leaves and brush scattered throughout, it even had a family of kookaburras living there which was also an important part of this scene . . I had prepped the ground of the location by clearing away the top layer o...f brush and placing vintage sewing patterns down into the soil later by layer, then bringing back the soil and leaves over the top of them leaving it all to weather and settle for a couple of weeks . . My vision was to make it look like the sewing patterns were a part of the forest floor, giving a nod to Julie’s ethos for sustainable fashion and using materials that come from the earth . . 21.01.2022 SOUND ON . Sacred Land, Ancient Stone, Healing Waters . . A glimpse into the natural beauty that is Porcupine Gorge National Park .... . Years of erosion by the creek reveals layers of multicoloured sandstone, millions of years old, rising from the gorge floor like a monolithic Pyramid . . The connection to our earth was strong here, swimming in this gorge and among this ancient stone with no one else around was truly breathtaking and made my heart sing. . 17.01.2022 The Brisbane Portrait Prize is a wonderful prize created to celebrate and showcase Brisbane people who have contributed to Brisbane’s culture and growth over the years. . This year my muse and subject was the incredible ‘Julie Tengdahl' of Tengdahl based in the iconic Brisbane Arcade. . Unfortunately, we did not make the finalists this year, however the journey to get to this final image has been one I am truly thankful for and will never forget. It helped me grow yet again ...creatively and as a person. . Julie, myself and the third part of this creative triangle, Melika are so very proud of this piece, the story, and what it represents for women everywhere. . Julie is a Brisbane woman who has contributed greatly to the Brisbane culture over the past 30 years and I want you to know a little about her and her story so we can celebrate her and women everywhere. . Image Title - Self, 2020 Standing here, Julie Tengdahl shows her Self as she sees the women she has been dressing for more than three decades. When stripped bare, every woman is grounded by primal elements that make her at once brave and vulnerable. To Julie, being industrious and looking luminous is no paradox women reveal their authentic, shining beauty when their unique essence is bared and celebrated as pure grace, pure joy, pure integrity. From her boutique in the iconic Brisbane Arcade, Julie has been in service to the women of Brisbane since 1988, hand cutting patterns for bespoke garments made from ethically-sourced fabrics printed with her own designs. Her commitment to the creative process begins and ends with a deep honouring of the earth, every decision guided by her ethos of Ahimsa. At the core of Tengdahl’s endurance in the Brisbane fashion scene is her faith in a woman’s power to strip away what no longer serves her in order to present her most glorious Self. I reflect on my entry last year, my muse, the wonderfully talented Francesca de Valence @fdvmusic , an Australian award winning songwriter, speaker and founder of the global creative tech community called I Heart Songwriting Club . . Hailing from Brisbane and having served and performed for her local community and Nationally for many years, gaining her recognition and an... 04.01.2022 While we wait in anticipation for the announcement of the Finalists for the Brisbane Portrait Prize I wanted to share a little more about meeting my muse for this year’s entry, Julie Tengdahl of Tengdahl . . While researching a subject for my piece this year I was looking in particular for a woman, a woman with the audacity and fearlessness to bear her true self, someone who didn’t mind stripping back the layers revealing all that she is. . I knew it was Julie as soon as I s...aw the way her eyes sparkled in the image, I found of her. I knew this woman had a story and I wanted to help tell it . . I must admit, when it came to calling, I was nervous, I always get a bit like that when I feel vulnerable, but I mustered up the courage and made the call. I spoke with the gorgeous Deb in the boutique, she told me Julie was away in India and that she would get the message to her. I followed up with an email and hoped for the best. . I think it was a week later I got a call from Julie and in her graceful joyous tone, said she would be delighted to be my subject. I was so elated I can’t tell you; I couldn’t wait to get started on our project. . I immediately called a friend to tell her the good news, she then went into project mode helping me to focus and get organised, she knows me well, and knows I can get excited and not know how to channel my energy at times. . We met with Julie at her boutique just days before Brisbane went into isolation in March of this year. Our timing and meeting were serendipitous to say the least. Getting together in person with our mood boards and ideas for our image showed us just how aligned we were, so much in fact, we even had the exact same images printed out as inspiration. .
