25.01.2022 Each year, many of us partake in the ritual of setting new year's resolutions that don't always come to fruition. Whether it's aiming to lose weight, exercise more, or earn a certain amount, these types of goals often end with nothing but disappointment. But given how busy all of our lives have become, why not aim for something which will help in all areas of your life. I'm talking about doing something that will make you more productive. Say ‘No’.... More often than not, we feel obliged or pressured into accepting every challenge or favor being asked of us. Yes, being helpful and creative is a good thing, in fact, a great thing, BUT first and foremost, it is critical to understand your priorities or risk lagging behind in your own goals. In the New York Times bestselling book, Getting Back to Happy, co-author Marc Chernoff wrote: Don't be afraid to say no to unnecessary obligations. In a world with so much noise and clutter, you must make room for what matters. That means pruning nonessential commitments and eliminating as many distractions as you possibly can. No wasted time, no fluff, no regrets. When you're crystal clear about your priorities, you can painlessly arrange them in the right order and discard the activities and commitments that do not support the ones at the top of your list. 24.01.2022 Raise your hand if at work, you have been in a situation where most of the people in the room are men. While at first this presents an obvious challenge, let's look at it as an opportunity... Yes, I am the only woman in the room, but I will stand out and also more likely to be remembered!... No wonder it’s so tempting for us to step back and try to blend in with the crowd as research indicates that individuals who are onlies (e.g. the only woman, the only LGBTQ person, the only person of color, etc.) are subject to more bias and discrimination from members of the majority group, whether intentional or not. HOWEVER, while the temptation to blend into the crowd is strong, most successful female leaders agree that staying true to yourself and playing to your strengths are paramount to beating the preconceived notions of how women should behave and appear in a work setting. Gone are the days where we need to conform to the widely held belief of what a successful leader looks like or should be. Standing out and being remembered can actually be a positive attribute - giving you the chance to spotlight the unique skills and outlook you bring to the table. 13.01.2022 You've probably heard the statistic: Men apply for a job when they meet 60% of the qualifications, but women apply only if they meet 100% of them. Why? According to research documented by Harvard Business Review, it's not the reason you'd think. It turns out, the most common response is: "I didn't think they would hire me since I didn't meet the qualifications, and I didn't want to waste my time and energy. But can women really be limiting their careers and impact because we... don't feel we meet ALL of the criteria? Having led senior teams in both Recruitment & Branding, as well as working in the field for many years, one thing is very clear: a job ad is a wish list. An employer may put their desired skills and experience on the list, but that doesn't mean they're all essential AND required. Far too often I see women not applying for roles which the believe they can't do, and more often than not, only applying for roles that don't stretch or add value to them. In fact, I say, if you meet 100% of the criteria what is fresh and value adding for either you or the company! Some of the best candidates bring difference and other experiences to the role. Now is a good time to talk about your career amplifying strategy. Look at a job ad and if you meet 60% of the criteria, apply for it! You'd be amazed at how many times I've seen great women apply, and they either are successful in getting that job or a new role is created for them! And even worst case scenario, new connections are made, goals are stretched, mentors, sponsors and advocates that can vouch for you are gathered and strengthened, and other roles can pop up as a result of this broadened network. So, my Career Tip is: Be aware of imposter syndrome. Be aware of doubting yourself. Be aware of trying to meet 100% of a job ad. Embrace - It's a wish list. You've got this. 13.01.2022 Imposter syndrome is VERY real. I deal with senior executives all the time and see it regularly. And interestingly (but unsurprisingly), impostor syndrome expert Valerie Young, who is the author of a book on the subject, The Secret Thoughts of Successful Women, found patterns in people who experience impostor feelings. As written in a recent Time article... + Perfectionists set extremely high expectations for themselves, and even if they meet 99% of their goals, they're goi...ng to feel like failures. Any small mistake will make them question their own competence. + Experts feel the need to know every piece of information before they start a project and constantly look for new certifications or trainings to improve their skills. They won't apply for a job if they don't meet all the criteria in the posting, and they might be hesitant to ask a question in class or speak up in a meeting at work because they're afraid of looking stupid if they don't already know the answer. + When the natural genius has to struggle or work hard to accomplish something, he or she thinks this means they aren't good enough. They are used to skills coming easily, and when they have to put in effort, their brain tells them that’s proof they’re an impostor. + Soloists feel they have to accomplish tasks on their own, and if they need to ask for help, they think that means they are a failure or a fraud. + Supermen or superwomen push themselves to work harder than those around them to prove that they're not impostors. They feel the need to succeed in all aspects of lifeat work, as parents, as partnersand may feel stressed when they are not accomplishing something. Who can relate to any of this? If so, one of the first and foremost steps in addressing Imposter syndrome is to acknowledge the thoughts, recognise these are common patterns in people and put them in perspective.
