25.01.2022 Its Brene Brown week here! (Im powering through her book, Rising Strong. Its such an inspiration and I cant recommend any of her stuff highly enough). I wanted to share this quote because it resonated with me and I suspect it will for many others too. Actually the statement "who do you think you are" is somewhere in my mind as I post things publicly; "Who are you, Kelly, to be splashing your thoughts all over social media?". Its what makes me feel a bit sick every time I ...hit "publish". We can do something really useful once weve recognised these as shaming thoughts that weve picked up from the world and internalised. We can see them for what they are and not as absolute truths about ourselves, and in doing so, start to free ourselves from their shaming effects. Give it a go. Try and catch yourself being influenced by a "never good enough" or "who do you think you are" message and take a step away from that message as absolutely true. #shame #brenebrown #psychotherapy #narrabeen
24.01.2022 Theres a lot of people having a really terrible time of it lately. I highly recommend this book for anyone whos experiencing depression and feels very alone in it. Its by a guy whos been extremely depressed and suicidal and came out the other side. Id also highly recommend talking to a trained counsellor. Theres a lot of us around and we are willing and able to help. #reasonstostayalive #suicideawareness #depression... #northernbeaches See more
21.01.2022 Quote used with permission. I wanted to share this because I thought it was such a profound description of how many people feel at this time of the year but dont feel its ok to say. Say it, I say. Thankyou to Someone for such a moving conversation. #christmas #counselling
21.01.2022 Two excellent positions with an excellent organisation; Carer Support and Recruitment and Youth Worker.
21.01.2022 I created this when I was 16 in an art class at school. I didnt know then that one day I would use it as a tool to help people in therapy. A big thanks to my 16 year old self. What you made has been useful! #psychotherapy #sandtray #narrabeen
20.01.2022 Super excited to get this in the mail today (especially since Booktopia said they couldnt guarantee how long it would take). Im halfway into the audio book version and sadly the narrator isnt working for me at all and there is such important stuff in this book that I need to read it with a highlighter in my hand (soz to all you who dont believe in damaging books!). Anyhow, the reason that Im so excited about this book is that it makes sense of and helps us know how to... work with people who are just confounded by these parts of themselves that seem to come out of nowhere and hijack them from time to time (or lots of the time). These can be described as bits of the self that have separated off under overwhelming trauma in order to protect the mind/the self. The experience people have of these experiences that seem like its not themselves acting or like they have no control CAN be understood and CAN be helped and healed. A colleague asked me this morning how I cope with working with so much trauma and part of my answer was that I find it so rewarding to work out how to apply the approaches of geniuses, like Janina Fisher, that have gone before me that have helped us understand and learn how to help people heal. And the thrill when I see people healing..... #traumatherapy #psychotherapy #northernbeaches #counsellor #lovewhatyoudo See more
19.01.2022 Second thought: This is not the time for freaking out in front of the people who rely on us.
19.01.2022 First thought: Let kids (and people in general) be worried and take time to listen to and care about those worries.
19.01.2022 Starting a weekend with some Brene Brown gold can never be a bad thing! This little nugget spells out what compassion and empathy are AND what they are not. To the compassionate and empathic out there, may this stoke the fire in your belly today. #empathy #compassion #brenebrown #counselling... #narrabeen See more

18.01.2022 Its not often I have beautiful images from my work that I can share here (even though I see breathtaking moments with my clients every day- Which would be really inappropriate for me to photograph and share, obviously, but sometimes I wish everyone got to see the stunning aspects of humanity that I get to witness). However today I was given these lovely flowers by a Year 12 Community and Family Studies class who I spoke to about homelessness. I love talking about the industry I care so much about and these flowers are such an awesome bonus!!

16.01.2022 An unexpected quote right? I wanted to share it after I heard an interview with Esther Perel (relationship therapist/guru) yesterday and I thought what she had to say about the high expectations we currently place on our relationships was extremely relevant and useful. She talked about how we (yes, big generalisation) expect from our marriage relationships what a whole village may have provided in the past and, in fact, what spirituality used to, think "You complete me" "My ...other half" etc. Thats a big ask of one relationship and explains some (not all) of the dissatisfaction people experience in their marriages. I think its worth considering what we expect of our partners that could be fulfilled in other ways. #relationshipcounselling #marriage #estherperel #expectations
16.01.2022 Picked up these little beauties today! Designed by the amazing Kara Vissers. Her creative genius always makes me look good!
15.01.2022 Important perspective...
14.01.2022 My 15 year old son told me I didnt do fun things. I knew I had this conference coming up and I thought Kid, youve got no idea. While the work we trauma therapists do can be deeply distressing and disturbing it is also incredibly meaningful and inspiring. Theres nowhere Id rather be this weekend than hearing the experts in this field and being amongst others who are as inspired about this work as I am. .....It beats spear fishing and playing computer games anyway!... #traumatherapy #counselling See more
13.01.2022 Oh my gosh this is my first go at an Instagramy video thing! A couple more to come straight away. The topic is Being the adult who is dealing with this stuff while being around kids who are dealing with this stuff and Ive got three thoughts to share.....
11.01.2022 My work often gives me cause to reflect on suffering. Today I find myself turning to the pages of Mans Search for Meaning by Viktor E. Frankl where he states: When a man finds that it is his destiny to suffer, he will have to accept his suffering as his task; his single and unique task. He will have to acknowledge the fact that even in suffering he is unique and alone in the universe. No one can relieve him of his suffering or suffer in his place. His unique opportunity lies in the way in which he bears his burden. #viktorfrankl #counselling #narrabeen #suffering #meaning
11.01.2022 In a world of things aimed at helping people cope with these strange and tough times this is something I think is highly fabulous and totally recommend! Its a podcast done by a colleague of mine, Huzzy Rodrigues aimed at the students at Barrenjoey High but actually applicable to anyone. His super dry tone adds an element I find particularly entertaining. I especially recommend listening to the end where he does hands down THE BEST guided mediation I have ever heard (it actually got real life LOLS out of me).
11.01.2022 I came across this little gem today and I think its the most beautiful thing Ive read in a while. #schooloflife #howtobesociable #counselling #narrabeen
09.01.2022 I think this interview is a must for pretty much everyone, but especially those who grapple with love and relationships (um, everyone?). Alain de Botton challenges our understanding of romantic love and our expectations of how this works in long term relationships. Do yourself a favour and have a listen!
08.01.2022 Monday morning therapy session. The sun was too nice not to be out in it. My client and I decided that this is the Northern Beaches answer to Freuds couch. Note: I dont usually photograph clients but today we had a bit of fun with the camera at the end and my client insisted I post these shots. #narrabeen #northernbeaches #psychotherapy #mondaymorningfeels
07.01.2022 Thought for today... by Tyndal Schreiner.
06.01.2022 This is not just and excellent read, its a must read.
06.01.2022 Working on identifying and understanding your triggers, as well as your partners, is one of the most important things that you can do to avoid hurting one anot...her again. Next time youre processing a fight or a regrettable incident, refer to the following examples as you identify what escalated the interaction for you. Thanks to Blessing Manifesting: Self Love Quotes for the awesome illustration of this concept!
05.01.2022 Thankyou to my colleague Warren, who also happens to be a great photographer for capturing a moment while I was delivering training today!! I remember the exact moment the photo was taken as I was listening to a youth worker apply what was being taught and I was admiring their insightfulness and skill at the time the shot was taken. #de-escalationtraining @burdekinassociation #highlyskilledteamofamazinganddedicatedworkers
05.01.2022 Its such an exciting time in the world of psychotherapy! In recent years weve learned so much more about how our mind influences and is influenced by our connections with people and our connections with our body. Weve learned so much about how we can utilise both of those types of connection and more to heal us from damage from trauma, from adverse childhood experiences and to influence how our body, even at a molecular level, operates. #psychotherapy #narrabeen #excitingtimes
04.01.2022 Sometimes counselling looks like this! #counseling #northernbeaches
01.01.2022 A bit of Brene Brown for you. As I read this today I reflected on a late into the night conversation I had a couple of days ago with a friend, a newer friend in the scheme of friendships. In it we both shared stories of our biggest falls in recent times. It was such a rich conversation and I think we both came out of it a bit more whole. Heres to owning our difficult stories and our falls and to sharing them....with those able to hear them. #narrabeen #brenebrown #latenightchats
01.01.2022 Third thought: Now is a good time to learn some ways of dealing with scary things. A couple of suggestions Ive got are - dont further catastrophise something thats already a bit catastrophic and, -take time to notice your current surrounds and your current safety and that right in this moment you are safe and ok.
