20.01.2022 A new opportunity to engage
19.01.2022 As the year comes to a close I have been reflecting on a few paragraphs from a particular article I randomly read on linkedIn recently. It was titled: How to lead when your team is exhausted - and you are too, by Marete Wedell-Wedellsborg. These are the words that have stayed with me: "Leaders need to be serious about mental wellbeing and intervene sooner rather than later. This means that your employees need more warmth and comfort than they might have prior to the pandem...ic. You can't soothe your team with spreadsheets and plans; that takes listening and daring to stay in the hardest moments - daring to talk about doubt and discomfort - instead of skipping ahead to the next time on the agenda" "Approaching with warmth and comfort involves encouraging the fundamental feeling that people are good enough, that they have earned their place, and that their worth is not just a function of their actions and results, but of who they are and how they carry themselves. So don't only talk about 'getting things done' in your conversations with colleagues, but also recognise 'who they are' using specific examples of their personal contributions and human qualities. This will reduce anxiety and second-guessing" I think there is a beautiful call to action here to humanise our approach to leading teams who have been under pressure. The relationship first not the routine expectations of the role you have? Push against the agenda and find ways to be responsive to the climate - perhaps a climate where there is or has been some emotional exhaustion. This might mean to slow down, take a breath or pause and rethink the goal posts you might have originally had. There is courage in doing this. Its been a hard year for early childhood. For us all personally and professionally. Lets walk with more warmth and care in our roles - for others and for ourselves. Thank you colleagues, clients and friends for a wonderful year of relationship. Enjoy the holiday season, the break with your family and the time to recharge in a way that fits with you. See you on the other side of 2020 where I will share some exciting projects and professional learning opportunities for 2021 - yep didn't get around to promoting this in time this year so just let that expectation go :) Aroha nui Kelly Goodsir xx **thats Caleb showing me how we are going to relax!

14.01.2022 Wow just been contemplating that 2021 marks my 4th year of business! It was actually never part of the plan to be here, to be doing what I do - but I am eternally grateful for the wonderful opportunities to partner with amazing early childhood professionals as we discuss, debate and rethink what we do and why we do it! Yesterday we kicked off a year of regular gatherings for the Kardinia leadership team and I must say I was driving home from this day of dialogue feeling so g...rateful for the amazing people that are part of our profession and their willingness to dive deep into places less familiar. We explored the impact we want to make and the stories shared when we think about the words and their meaning - the desire to make a difference could be physically felt Sometimes a genuine, tricky, challenging conversation that gets you thinking is just what we need Be brave and invite a conversation about what we don’t yet know - it takes you into a place of curiosity.....
14.01.2022 I wholeheartedly believe in the power of teaching through the lens of learner dispositions. I am comfortable with the complexity of what this means for my practice, for how I write and how I engage as a professional. I believe in the value of empowering educators and people to not only cultivate their natural dispositions but to challenge themselves to nurture the less natural ones. How do I do that personally?... Each year I pick two words - one of my strengths and one of my challenges I want to work on (its just like a self-review without all the paperwork). The idea is that I become more aware of the impact I have through my strengths, therefore affirming my sense of self and look for the opportunities/contexts to grow where I am challenged, allowing me to develop my own strategies that work for me. And yes I do traditional PD courses too Those of you who have been in my workshops I may have asked you to pick a card from my pack of 30 Learning Disposition Cards https://www.kglearning.com.au/pr/learning-disposition-cards. Whilst they are written to reflect children I also use them for myself - my two cards for this year are: 1. Optimism 2. Methodical OPTIMISM because I am a serial optimist - I just cannot dwell on problems - I see problems but I cannot stay there. I have developed and nurtured the ability to navigate complex problem solving in many contexts - for example mental health or workplace challenges. I have a fundamental internal narrative that says "what are the choices here". I am thinking about this word more this year given the accumulated challenges I have experienced and optimism has become more of a daily choice and conscious act. Still a strength but still needs nurturing. METHODICAL is about setting a plan and seeing something through. With all the disruption over the last few years in my life I want to come back to this and revisit what it means for how I start and finish things - this crosses both my professional and personal life. In researching a bit more about this recently I landed on the word procrastination - I know we all know what this is and what it feels like 'eek' - the constant tension to do something yet the motivation to always avoid it - its exhausting too right!. I learnt through my research that procrastination is a form of self-regulation - experiencing a negative feeling associated with a task and as such we will lean towards something more positive - self-regulating the discomfort to be more comfortable. This got me thinking more about how being more methodical might help me with my avoidance on particular tasks. I put my two cards on my computer as a visual reminder that I tap in and out of - doing, thinking, talking and writing about. I wonder if this is a way of working with our people on their goals - perhaps being less black and white and allowing the space for people to drive their own development - through learning dispositions. Just a thought?

07.01.2022 Unearthing Why - Page 28 - I am in the Room! This piece of writing really impacted me and something I am still thinking about - the complexity of showing up whole heartedly, being self aware when you are not the best version of yourself and adopting strategies for finding your way so that the way we teach (and lead) is from a place of responsibility. Please have a read of the blog post Jill has written here. You can also now purchase this amazing book from my website/shop :)

04.01.2022 I love pedagogical conversation and spend most of my days in the depths of this dialogue. Yesterday was no exception when I visited with my long time friends and clients at Little Groms in the beautiful beachside town of Torquay, VIC. Often words stay with me when I am talking with people - the words they use to refer to finding meaning in their practice or the words that intrigue or challenge us. I think words offer a wonderful platform for deeper research. The word that ...lingered yesterday was 'authentic' - a word that for me and the team I was in dialogue with holds high expectations, advocacy and a strong sense of knowing and being as an educator. The director Kristie and I spoke of their desire to be authentic in all that they do which is reflected in some of the changes they made moving into 2021. Authenticity is also about the congruence between our deeper values and beliefs and how this outworks in our day to day practices - not just as individuals but as a team of pedagogical thinkers. We must first know the beliefs and values we want to hold dear in order to be able to explore their depth in our shared practice. Here are some photos that share that journey of authenticity from a team who has and holds a strong image of children.

02.01.2022 I was inspired to write about WORDS yesterday and how they influence me and my practice - I hope it offers you place for your own thinking around language, words and meaning https://www.kglearning.com.au/post/words-matter
01.01.2022 An important discussion as we head into one of the most commercially driven seasons of the year - how can we reposition the way we celebrate this time of year so it reflects the very voices of those we are celebrating with: children and families. What opportunities are there for communicating our philosophy in very practical ways and ignite a different conversation that extends from ‘but they like it’ - this article from our friends at Reggio Emilia is a must read now so the program inclusions are conscious thought through opportunities.
