25.01.2022 Looking forward to a day of learning.

25.01.2022 A couple of weeks ago I ran a poll asking whether spelling and grammar matter on the internet. The answer was a resounding YES! I wholeheartedly agree. While there is certainly a growing proportion of people whose heads do not explode when they see poor spelling and grammar, there are still plenty of people who find it annoying. And annoying people is the last thing you want to do when trying to build a Facebook audience to promote and grow your brand.... While there aren’t many certainties in life these days, it’s a reasonable bet that you won’t offend anyone if you use proper spelling and grammar. Here’s my current list of spelling and grammar peeves. What others can you add to the list? ********************** DEFIANTLY is often used instead of DEFINITELY (at least you can sometimes blame spell check for this one) DEVINE is actually spelled divine (even if you’re a witch or goddess) HIS means it belongs to him while HE’S is short for ‘he is’ (I often see comments like ‘his really cute’ when it should be ‘he’s really cute’) COULD OF should be ‘COULD HAVE’ (and also applies to ‘should of’ and ‘would of’) YOU’RE means ‘you are’ while YOUR means it belongs to you THEN and THAN are two different words, for example ‘THEN I told her that I loved dogs more THAN cats’ LOOSE and LOSE are also two different words and you cannot loose weight, you lose it A PART and APART mean two entirely different things, being APART means separate from, while being A PART means being involved And the most common error of all is the incorrect usage of apostrophes. My motto is ‘if in doubt, leave it out’ but as a general rule you NEVER need an apostrophe for plurals. That means Sundays are for yoga not Sunday’s are for yoga.

23.01.2022 Starting a business is hard. Starting a business during a global pandemic is 1000 times harder and incredibly brave, but that's exactly what Celia Craig of Artaria has done! An internationally renowned classical oboist, Celia Craig - Oboe and Cor Anglais has launched Artaria with a bold vision of creating unforgettable, innovative, immersive experiences of the highest quality for adventurous audiences.... The brilliant thing about Celia's vision is that what she's offering is incredibly appealing to a mainstream audience, not just existing classical music lovers. If you'd love a taste of what Celia and Artaria are offering, check out the gorgeous trailer at the link below.

22.01.2022 One of the most popular services I offer is my Digital Marketing Audit. This is where I review a client's digital marketing profiles and activity across social media, websites, email marketing, etc and provide recommendations for optimising them to improve their effectiveness in building awareness and driving conversions. I charge $300 (plus GST) for this service, but on Monday I am presenting a 2-hour online workshop during which I will show you how to audit your own digital... marketing. Tickets to this workshop are just $29, so not only will you save a bucket of money, you'll also learn how to optimise your own profiles and activity, and WHY I make the recommendations I do. See you there! https://diydigitalmarketingaudit.eventbrite.com.au

22.01.2022 Glam Adelaide and Showcase SA have been doing an amazing job supporting and promoting local business over the past couple of months. If you haven't already, make sure you add your business to the I Choose SA directory. It's free! <3 Also check out the Glam Adelaide advertising packages. They have enormous reach, and their packages offer fantastic value.... #supportlocal #ichoosesa

19.01.2022 Have you ever wanted to try Facebook Ads but weren't sure where to start? Now is the perfect time to give them a go. Facebook usage is up 60% so there are more people online to see your ads. At the same time Facebook advertising revenue has dropped, so less businesses are competing for advertising space which brings the cost down. And the best part is you can run an effective Facebook Ads campaign with just a few dollars!... Still not sure where to start? I'm running an online Facebook Ads workshop with Tammy's Table by Tammy Edwards in a couple of weeks. It's a 2-hour online workshop where I'll be explaining how Facebook Ads work and giving a live demonstration of how to create a campaign, all for just $29. Check out the details in the event below.

14.01.2022 I love learning, and I particularly love learning from other women in business. I'm excited for this online event to open today. With 50 separate speakers, it's a good thing they provide on-demand access for a full year!

14.01.2022 I love working with clients who are willing to step right out of their comfort zone, and that's exactly what Tammy did yesterday when we filmed some video content for business owners, focused on how to navigate change and survive a business crisis. (Hello global pandemic.) It is very possible to create quality content with a smartphone, as you can see here. If you're providing something of value, you don't need studio-quality audio and video production. And this video will deliver value in spades to Tammy's clients. Thanks for the opportunity to contribute Tammy! <3

12.01.2022 Don't shoot the messenger, but there are only 105 days until Christmas. This means that each of my WEA adult learning courses is running just one more time this year. 'Connect to Your Customers with Mailchimp' runs for 2 weeks x 3 hours starting at 6pm on Tuesday 22nd September.... Email marketing is a highly effective tool and this course is a hands-on way to learn how to maximise its use. I hope to see you there!

12.01.2022 When I work with a client to optimise their Facebook page or audit their digital marketing, one of the first things I look at is their cover image. Many businesses use images of their products or their location as their cover image. Some of these photos are quite lovely and high quality, but there's often one thing missing. People! ... The most effective cover image you can use is one which shows PEOPLE using your products or services in some way. This is a form of social proof, which suggests that people are buying your product or service and benefiting from it, and helps your potential customer visualise themself doing the same. Images with faces in them have also been proven to increase conversion rates, so take a good look at the images you have on your Facebook, website and other online profiles. The article below goes into a lot more detail about how and why images can be such an effective marketing tool. Are you using images as effectively as you could be? This is something you can implement yourself reasonably quickly and easily, so I encourage you to review your digital platforms now.

11.01.2022 Is it me, or is this year absolutely flying by? I can't believe it's time to share this message again already! *********************... One of the things that falls into the Etc bucket in my working life is the role of State Manager for Calendar Club Australasia (New Zealand and Australia). My first experience with this business was back in 2016 when I ran two Calendar Club stores at Westfield Tea Tree Plaza over a period of 14 weeks. Wow, that was a crazy ride! I had a brilliant team of 8 staff working in the stores, our home was overrun with endless boxes of stock, we sold a massive 22,253 calendars and I had two days off during the entire period (Christmas Day and Proclamation Day). It was exhausting but exhilarating! Adding to the fun, the State Manager at the time decided to move on two weeks into the season and I put up my hand to take on that role as well. I've always enjoyed a challenge. :) I was delighted to be invited back as State Manager for the 2017, 2018 and 2019 seasons, and now the 2020 season is nearly upon us and it's recruitment time again! Running a Calendar Club store is a unique experience. You get to open and run your own business as a licencee for a short period of time, with heaps of support and virtually no risk. All of the stock, store fixtures and fittings and POS equipment is supplied, and I'm here to provide operational and technical support as well as sales and customer service coaching. We're recruiting now for stores opening in late October and November, so check out the ad in the link below and please pass this on to anyone you think might be interested!

10.01.2022 Tonight is the last week of 'Developing and Launching a New Business' and my final session of teaching at WEA adult learning for the year. Despite the interruption caused by Covid-19 it has been a busy year for me at WEA with: 1 round of Developing a Digital Marketing Plan... 3 rounds of Developing and Launching a New Business 3 rounds of Facebook for Advertising 3 rounds of Connect to Your Customers with Mailchimp I absolutely love teaching at WEA. The students I meet are wonderful and so eager to learn, and many of them have become friends. I'm looking forward to a break and a chance to recharge the batteries, but can't wait to get back into it in 2021.

10.01.2022 Nawww, this is why I love teaching at WEA adult learning so much! This feedback was from my latest batch of 'Developing and Launching a New Business' students. But the credit should go to them, not me. They're the ones that make the course interesting and interactive by being so enthusiastic and engaged. There were some fantastic business ideas in this group, and I can't wait to see them all launch! <3

09.01.2022 I try to #supportlocal whenever possible and found a brilliant regional business to support this Christmas thanks to SA Woman Australia. Chesters Chocolates is based in Jamestown, but can post her beautiful handcrafted chocolates anywhere in Australia. I just can't believe it didn't occur to me to buy an extra pack for myself!

09.01.2022 The world of digital marketing and social media is always changing, so I try to attend industry conferences whenever possible to make sure I keep on top of the latest news and best practice. The silver lining of the Covid cloud is that this year Digital Marketers Down Under - DMDU is being held as a two-day virtual conference so I can attend for the first time! It's usually held on the Gold Coast and I've never been able to squeeze it into my schedule before. Bring on the learning!

08.01.2022 A few weeks ago, I posted about being nominated for the SA Woman Australia Quiet Achiever Award. I received so many lovely comments and messages and I cannot thank you all enough for the love and support. I can hardly believe it, but tonight it has been announced that I am a FINALIST in this award category!... The winners are chosen by a panel of judges, but there is also a people’s choice award based on a public vote. If you would care to submit a vote for me or any of the amazing finalists, please visit http://bit.ly/sawawards2020Finalists #SAWAwards2020 #iamsawoman PS if you’ve been thinking about joining SA Woman but have been procrastinating, now is the perfect time to become a member. They have even provided me with a code so you can receive $10 off your membership. Simply visit www.sawoman.com.au/join and use coupon code KellyHody_q0m7feek

07.01.2022 Wow, it's been a busy few weeks! With Covid-19 restrictions lifting, I'm back teaching face-to-face at WEA but will also continue to offer a number of online workshops. Topics include developing a digital marketing plan, planning and starting a new business, email marketing, Facebook Ads and more.... Check out my events tab for details. :) (Yes, this is an old photo ... taken well before social distancing became the new normal ;))

06.01.2022 Like most people I have a love/hate relationship with Google. It certainly can be intrusive at times, but as a marketer it also offers some incredible (and free) tools to help business owners amplify their voice and reach a broader audience. Google My Business is one of those tools, and on Monday morning I'm helping a bunch of business owners learn to harness its power.... Want to join me? Book here: https://googlemybusinessyournewbusinessbestfriend.eventbrit

04.01.2022 Advertising is definitely not my area of focus, but with an increasing number of e-commerce clients I thought there might be some value in attending this event. I've also been working with Shopify recently, and I'm keen to explore influencer marketing so I reckon I'll get more than my money's worth over the next couple of days.

03.01.2022 Don't mistake my silence for disinterest. I see you. I hear you. I care. I'm watching. I'm listening. I'm learning how to become part of the solution instead of part of the problem.... #indigenouslivesmatter #antiracist

03.01.2022 It was so lovely to open the Sunday Mail today and see my gorgeous client Rachel Sharp of Little Oak Studio featured, talking about The Covid Tales - Book Project. Of course, stories like this don't just happen on their own. PR is often overlooked as a marketing tactic, but can be very effective in reaching a wide audience. In this case our objective in using PR is to create awareness and reinforce the key messages we are communicating through social media and other online ma...rketing channels, all aimed at driving traffic to the booking page on Rachel's website. PR is a specialist form of marketing though, so if I'm working with a client and we decide we want to incorporate PR into the marketing strategy, I always refer them to Michelle over at Prakky. Not only is she a PR guru, she also provides services including media relations, promotions, corporate comms writing, training and public speaking. I also think there can be a perception that PR is an expensive option but, as always, it's about weighing up the potential return on investment. I've always found Michelle to be fantastic at working within a client's budget and providing exceptional ROI. PS - if you'd like more info about Rachel's project, check out her website. You'd better be quick though, I suspect places are going to fill fast! www.thelittleoakstudio.com.au/the-covid-tales

02.01.2022 This morning I'm attending an SA Woman Australia breakfast event, with a panel of social media experts providing their views on current best practice. Social media is an ever-changing beast so it's important for me to keep up with changing trends, plus it's always refreshing to hear from others in the industry.

02.01.2022 In August last year I posted about testing Mailerlite as an alternative to Mailchimp. I’ve been using Mailerlite with two clients for 9 months now and the verdict is in Mailerlite and Mailchimp are both fantastic options for small business!... Having said that, there are definitely advantages and disadvantages to both. In my experience: Mailerlite doesn’t provide any predefined templates but the editor is easier to use and results in better-looking campaigns thanks to a broader range of predefined content blocks. Mailerlite automations are much simpler to set up. When I transitioned a large (25k+) list from Mailchimp to Mailerlite I saw an immediate improvement in deliverability, open rates, click rates and unsubscribe rates. Mailerlite requires you to apply for account approval when importing a list. This delay can be a bit frustrating when you’re enthusiastic and ready to get started, but this is how they protect their exceptional deliverability. Mailchimp suits users who want or need to use integrations with their email marketing software. Mailchimp has a much better range of established integrations, while Mailerlite will often require you to work with the developer API or a third party platform like Zapier to make integrations work. Mailchimp also has more detailed analytics available. From a price perspective, the free Mailchimp plan gives you up to 2000 subscribers and 10,000 emails per month while the free MailerLite plan gives you up to 1000 subscribers with 12,000 emails. It’s when you get into paid territory that Mailerlite becomes much cheaper than Mailchimp. So the verdict is in. I will continue to use and recommend BOTH Mailchimp and Mailerlite, depending on the specific needs of my client. Either way, email is a powerful, low-cost marketing activity which often provides the best return-on-investment of any marketing channel. Hit me up if you’d like to find out more!

02.01.2022 If your Facebook feed is anything like mine, there's a lot of anger and frustration out there right now. So I thought I'd add to the outrage by asking this loaded question ... do spelling and grammar matter on the internet? Stay tuned for the poll results and my thoughts on the subject.

01.01.2022 I learned a useful new phrase today. "The elephant in the Zoom". It's when a person participating in the video call has gained a great deal of weight during the lockdown, a fact which everybody else studiously avoids mentioning.... It's me. I'm the elephant in the Zoom.

01.01.2022 Well, this is a bit exciting! <3

01.01.2022 Business friends, listen up! Tammy's Table by Tammy Edwards is a brilliant way to build a network and drive growth in your business through mastermind-style peer-to-peer coaching, facilitated by a woman who has been there and done that. Just two places available, so be quick. ;)

01.01.2022 Do you review? For a small business, reviews can be a really powerful marketing tool. They are a form of social proof, which validates what the business is offering and shows that other people are buying it. When other people talk about how good we are, it has much more credibility than when we talk about ourselves. ... Every time I interact with a new business, I try to remember to give them a like and leave a review on Facebook or Google. It costs less than two minutes of my time, but helps them enormously. Do you do the same?
