24.01.2022 Our very own Jak Kime recently returned from a 10 day trip to New Zealand. Jak is the team chiro for the Under 16s Rouse Hill Rhinos Junior Rugby League club and they went across the Tasman for their end of season trip with a few games lined up against some New Zealand teams. Jak certainly had his work cut out for him as the Rhinos encountered some significantly larger sized 16 (and 17) year old boys/men in their games. There were concussions, knee, shoulder, ankle, jaw and ...hand injuries aplenty, but with the help of Jak on the sidelines and some serious will power and tenacity, the boys walked away with a win! Congratulations Rhinos and well done Jak for your hard work! Jak is in the Kellyville clinic on Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays if you would like to book in for an appointment. Call 9629 1717

There are many causes of sciatica including disc bulge/irritation, soft tissue inflammation, tight lumbar and gluteal musculature. Chiro may be able to help you with these symptoms. If youve been suffering then give us a call!!! 9629 1717.

23.01.2022 The rotator cuff muscles are responsible for much of the movement of the shoulder. Can you guess what their prime function is? Thats right - rotation!!!! If you have a look at this cute pic you can see which individual RC muscle creates each specific movement.... The most commonly injured RC muscle is the supraspinatus. As you can see, it is responsible for lifting the arm away from the body (abduction). The main site of injury is where it passes over the bony prominence at the tip of the shoulder, known as the acromion. Often the supraspinatus gets "impinged" or compressed against the bone and this can cause minor tears and irritation. Take a look a the image and think about whether any of these movements cause you pain. It may be due to an injury to your rotator cuff. Some myofascial release in conjunction with manipulation of the shoulder joint, among other techniques, can provide significant relief of pain and restoration of mobility. Take good care of your shoulders!

20.01.2022 In the eternal words of House Stark, Winter is coming... So we thought what a great time to discuss FROZEN SHOULDER! The cause of frozen shoulder (or adhesive capsulitis) is still largely unknown. However, it has been noted to occur more commonly in people with previous shoulder injury or recovering from surgeries such as a mastectomy in which the patient must stay relatively immobile through the upper torso. ... Like all synovial joints in the body, the shoulder joint has a joint capsule. A joint capsule is just a couple of layers of membranous material holding the synovial fluid (which allows the joint to remain lubricated) inside. The capsule is then covered in ligaments and muscles. Frozen shoulder does resolve on its own, however on average this can take 2 and a half years. Manipulative therapies have been shown in some cases to provide pain relief and improve mobility. Supportive taping can disperse the forces placed on the shoulder and help with day-to-day activities. Another useful treatment is to gently release the rotator cuff muscles to allow them to take more of the load so that the capsular membrane isnt irritated as much. Manipulative treatment on the cervical (neck) region can also improve shoulder function. Keep rugged up this Winter and remember that staying active is always better than immobilisation. Kellyville Chiro Team.

18.01.2022 Most people have heard of carpal tunnel syndrome, but few realise how effective chiropractic can be in relieving the symptoms. A very simple definition relates to the compression of one of the arm nerves that passes through the tunnel. This can lead to atrophy of muscles, pain and weakness. More common in office workers and occupations involving repetitive, mechanical force on the hands.

16.01.2022 Its that time when the winter sports are starting up! Over the next few weeks we will talk about the common injuries specific to each of the popular winter sports. Starting today with soccer!... - In 2011 there were about 3000 hospitalisations in Australia caused by soccer related injuries (AIHW). - As most of you can guess, the majority of soccer injuries are to the lower limb. However the second most commonly injured area is the head. Therefore, it is important to consider multiple areas of the body when dealing with soccer players. - Injuries of the lower limb can commonly cause issues at a site other than the point of injury. For example, if you sprain your ankle, then have to walk with a slight limp for a few days, you may notice the pain migrates to the knee, hip or lower back. This may be the result of the change in gait pattern (the way you walk) due to a compensatory mechanism used by the body to protect the injured area. The kinematic chain of the lower limb (ankle, knee, hip) is functioning differently to normal and this can cause an overload of stress to be placed on an area that is not used to it. Being assessed by a health professional (such as a chiro or physio) can be important to try and minimise the risk of further injury, even to a different part of the body. - Head injuries can be much more serious and immediate referral to a hospital or GP is advised if any brain or spinal cord involvement is suspected. However, anyone who has been in a car accident or suffered whiplash may tell you that the real pain didnt occur at the time of the accident, but several days to a week later. It is not uncommon for the neck to be sore a few days after a head injury (such as a head clash) due to the sudden change in movement. Again, being assessed by a chiro after a head clash or neck strain may help to get you back on the field sooner and feeling better! Both of our practitioners Wayne and Jak have over 15 years of soccer experience each and have treated many patients who have injured themselves on the field. Even if youre uninjured, it may be a good idea to drop in to the clinic and let us assess your musculoskeletal mobility to help you function at your peak this season! www.kellyvillechiro.com.au 9629 1717 Pic - Usain Bolt receiving chiropractic treatment before an event. 16.01.2022 Happy Monday! With the weather turning cold recently, here at the clinic we have definitely noticed an increase in patients waking up with a wry neck (also known as acute torticollis). Commonly, patients will present with their head leaning off to one side and they experience severe acute pain when trying to straighten or turn to the avoided side.... A common cause is sleeping in a poor position that places stress on the cervical (neck) vertebre. These vertebral joints become inflamed and somewhat restricted. Typically the surrounding musculature will go into a state of spasm to protect the underlying dysfunction. It is this mechanism that causes the acute pain. Here at Kellyville Chiro we have a strong focus on soft tissue treatment. Our treatment plans are individual and differ from patient to patient but common elements in the management of a wry neck involve (gentle) soft tissue massage, stretches and joint manipulation (if appropriate and comfortable for the patient). So dont let a stiff neck ruin your week. Give us a call and get BACK to your best! Kellyville Chiro Team.

16.01.2022 Happy Monday everyone! We are back with our second instalment of Winter sports and their common injuries. Today we are talking about rugby league! First, some quick stats:... - In a season of rugby league theres an average of about 1600 hospital admissions. (SMA) - The primary cause of injury is collision followed by falls. Just like soccer, the most commonly injured site is the lower limb. - The most common type of injury is soft tissue bruising (cork) followed by joint and ligament sprains. - The high risk age of injury is 15-24. With that in mind, it is important to train effectively, manage injuries properly as they occur and ensure that appropriate rehab is undertaken. Similar to soccer, low back and hip biomechanics are very important to the proper functioning of the body. A postural examination is a great way to identify any areas that may need attention! Happy playing! Kellyville Chiro Team. Pic: plagued with low back issues throughout his career, Tiger Woods has always been a firm believer in the benefits of chiropractic for performance optimisation.

10.01.2022 Which one are you? Take particular note of the image on the right. There are several things to observe: - Forward head carriage: this has become very common in recent years due to our more sedentary lifestyle. It leads to a weakening of the front neck muscles which in turn results in the back of the neck taking excess load. This can lead to a restriction in mobility or a "jamming" stiffness in the neck.... - Shoulders rolled forward: this can be caused by prolonged keyboard and mouse use. You can see the shoulders are sitting much further forward in the image on the right. This is due to the pectoral muscles becoming tight, the shoulder joint capsule functionally restricting posterior mobility of the head of the humerus and also a weakness in the lower traps and surrounding musculature, which allows the shoulders to be pulled forward. - Thirdly, but equally detrimental, is the loss of proper lumbar lordosis (the supportive curve in the lower back). Remember when you used to slouch in your chair at school and get into trouble?! Similar to that, when the lower back is not supported by the back of the chair it causes an overload of stress to be placed on the posterior elements of the spine. Although we all try to maintain good sitting posture, after 5 minutes or so we can often slip back into a bad sitting position. Using a bright post it note on the border of your screen is a great way to remind yourself to sit better. Also, a good chair with lumbar support can help significantly. If youre feeling stiff from too much time at the desk then give us a call here at the clinic where we can assess your posture, treat any areas that may require it and begin you on the road to maintaining good spinal health! 09.01.2022 DOES CRACKING YOUR JOINTS CAUSE ARTHRITIS??? As a follow on from our previous post on cracking your knuckles, this weeks post addresses another very common question we get here at the clinic. Lets get straight to it, the short answer is no.... Many, many studies have been conducted over the years (all the way back to 1975!) to ascertain whether there is a link between cracking joints and osteoarthritis. The general consensus is that there is absolutely no link. There was an Australian study conducted in 2017 that found that cracking your knuckles (and other synovial joints) actually had positive health benefits! The theory here was that as the joint was cavitated (cracked), it released carbon dioxide and this caused a change in the pH levels within the area, creating a less acidic environment, which in turn lessened pain levels. Having said all this, we do not recommend habitually cracking you knuckles because it has been seen to be linked to stress and poor mental health as well as alcoholism and chronic tobacco use. Happy Monday everyone, have a cracking day! (sorry). Kellyville Chiro Team. Reference: Suvorova, Y. S., & Conger, R. (2017). 08.01.2022 Happy Monday! Spines come in all shapes and sizes. Which of the below shapes most represents your spine do you think? The natural curves of your spine are influenced by your genetics, as well as the day-to-day postural strains we experience. ... The type of spinal curves you have can influence the types of spinal pain or injury that may present more commonly for you individually. For example: the "D. Lordosis" shape or sway back, is commonly seen (particularly in pregnant women) and patients with this shape tend to have very tight low back muscles and hip flexors as well as possible weakness in the hamstrings. They may also report difficulty flexing forward and find that sitting for prolonged periods of time cause low back pain. Here at Kellyville Chiro we see all different shapes of backs every day and we love putting our skills to the test to find the areas of restriction and help our patients feel better faster! Have a great week everyone and remember to get up from your desk at least every half an hour! Kellyville Chiro Team.

06.01.2022 Ho Ho Ho Merry Xmas everyone!!! Here's our festive season opening hours :-)

06.01.2022 WHAT IS THAT CRACKING SOUND??? For such a commonly asked question, there are multiple trains of thought and the answer has been a topic of debate within the scientific research world for many years. However, one thing is for certain: Its not your bones breaking!... You may have heard before that the sound comes from gas escaping the joint as it is "cracked". This was the train of thought among health professionals for many years. The theory being that over time, gas bubbles form within the joint cavity (knuckle, ankle, finger etc.) and when the joint is stretched to a certain point of tension, the bubble collapses and a popping sound is heard as a result. However, recently a study was conducted with the aim of visualising what actually happens within a joint when it is being "cracked" in real time. These researchers got participants to "crack" their knuckles whilst inside a special type of MRI machine and observed the results. They found that it wasnt gas bubbles collapsing that caused the popping sound but a sudden cavity formation within the joint that caused the sound. Like a vacuum within the space between the two bones but created suddenly. This is an interesting development and although there is more research to be done on the topic, we are moving constantly closer to a better understanding of the biomechanics of the amazing machine that is the human body. Now you can say you learnt something on this cloudy Monday! Kellyville Chiro Team. 04.01.2022 Lateral epicondylitis aka Tennis Elbow is a painful condition that occurs quite commonly. Not just in tennis players!!! As you can see in the picture, multiple arm muscles all attach at one point on the elbow known as the lateral epicondyle. These muscles have the specific role of lifting or extending the hand at the wrist joint. Due to this, tennis elbow is common in people who do a lot of typing or do repetitive movements with one hand, such as swinging a hammer. Treatment ...options include soft tissue massage of the affected area to break up any scar tissues or adhesions in the muscle. Ultrasound or interferential current can be effective as well as manipulation of the elbow, wrist and shoulder. Dont live in pain, be active, keep moving and seek treatment if you feel sore! Your friends at Kellyville Chiro.
