18.01.2022 Integrity Care now being investigated SafeWork SA as more than 30 workers appear to have been working without police clearances. These are not a magic bullet but they are a legal requirement. Integrity Care must be shut down immediately and permanently. Every day it remains open, the government is showing other agencies they can get away with this.

18.01.2022 This statement from Equity Diversity nails it. As you might know, I had a long relationship with the company concerned, starting when I was barely 16 years old. I left my position there and stopped that relationship about six months ago as over the years I saw the company have fewer and fewer disabled leaders, eventually having no disabled people on their board of directors. This may have changed since I left; I don’t know. When the company structure changed to replace the Ar...tistic Director role with a CEO (especially a non-disabled one) I was confused, hurt, and angry because I couldn’t understand how this would benefit the cultural and artistic directions of the company. This latest move, holding a fundraiser screening of a film that has been widely labeled insulting and damaging by autistic people, is the latest blow for me. I came to the company as an undiagnosed autistic teen struggling with their mental health. That teenager, and everyone like them, has been let down, with one less safe space in a world that didn’t have many to begin with. Everything I am writing is my own opinion and experience, not representative of any organisation, and it is not overstating to say what I have seen happen, especially over the last few months, has absolutely broken my heart. I am, however, grateful for the people and skills I found there which I plan to continue using to build a more respectful, bold, and inclusive arts community. I won’t get it right all the time but I know one thing for bloody sure: Nothing about us without us. See more

17.01.2022 This. All of this.

09.01.2022 UPDATE: I got my medical evidence letter. The doctor looked at me, got me to wiggle my fingers, took my blood pressure for some reason, and then wrote it. And then asked me if I’ve seen Breaking Bad because it has an actor with Cerebral Palsy in it.

09.01.2022 THIS!!! As someone diagnosed autistic as an adult, when I first started talking about it, I got comments like but you can’t be. I’ve never seen you do (insert stereotypical autistic behaviour) and you shouldn’t call yourself autistic, really. You’re just a little bit aspie Comment one assumes that all autistic people function and behave in the same way, which is, of course, not true of any two people in the world. It also doesn’t take into account the sophisticated maskin...g abilities I had developed as an undiagnosed person. Not having a diagnosis to legitimise my autism traits, I had long dismissed them as simple oddities that should be hidden as much as possible. I became capable for the most part of suppressing my need to stim (rock, flap, or make noise) in certain settings or in front of certain people. This sometimes causes me great discomfort or even pain. And then there were times I would come home and collapse into a little stimmy ball of stim, letting out everything I had pushed down during the day. Just because you don’t personally see it, that doesn’t mean it doesn’t happen. Comment two uses the now non-existent delineation between autism and Asperger’s, and clearly sees one as better than the other. Doing so dismisses the genuine difficulties of people who are seen in this way. Yes, I am able to speak but I am also rendered unable to do so at times by stress or anxiety. That conversation we just had that appeared easy might have been the result of careful scripting on my part. Sometimes strong smells, lights, and noises make it extremely hard for me to participate in social events. The list goes on. But the biggest problem with this comment is that it focuses on the mirage of what might have been if a person were ‘high functioning’ rather than respecting, valuing, and celebrating them as they are, missing their unique talents, personality, and contributions. We are all different and we are all valid. Tl;dr: autism function labels are horse shit. Fight me.

08.01.2022 Beyond thrilled to announce my new role as Creative Director of True Ability, a new theatre company for and by disabled people, together with AJZ productions. https://tinyurl.com/TAtheatre

06.01.2022 I was recently interviewed by The Advertiser for a story about disability and the healthcare system. https://www.adelaidenow.com.au//a805869423100067a48f3f0880 A lot of my comments didn’t get included in the story, so I’m posting them here for context. ... The health system remains completely inaccessible for the majority of disabled people at every level. People are segregated and not given information about health and wellbeing that many others take for granted, such as relationships and sexuality education and independent living skills like cooking and eating well. While this things aren’t the direct responsibility of SA health, they do have a long-term ripple effect on health. Then on top of that, generally, health professionals have little to know understanding of disability and how it can overlap with health. For instance, I know of people who are non-verbal, and have no assistive tech, so the only way that they can communicate that they have a toothache, for example, is through their behaviour. After maybe weeks ir even months of not being understood, the person gets frustrated and their behaviour escalates. So their support worker takes them to the doctor and says oh, they're acting up. So they get sedative medication for their onward behaviour rather than proper treatment for the actual problem. As a result, people with disabilities are dying of preventable and treatable illnesses. This should be a national outrage. The health system also remains very inaccessible in terms of the physical realm, too. Women with disabilities will go to get a Pap smear for example, and be told the bed can’t lower to allow them to get on the bed from their wheelchair. One good thing about a plan like the one recommended in the report is that it might finally see health and disability working together at the government level. At the moment, people become ping pong balls getting bounced between the two. Often when disabled people go to hospital, there is difficulty in their support workers not being allowed to visit to provide their regular support. But the hospital workers also don’t know how to give that, so the disabled person can get stuck in bed or without a shower for an unacceptable length of time. Or someone might be waiting to be discharged from hospital, but because their needs have changed they need modifications to their home before that can happen. So in the meantime they’re stuck in a bed, when they don’t need it any more. It’s a ridiculous excerisise from both a rights and financial perspective. Yes, there is some demand for specialist plans or treatment facilities that might offer things like a low sensory waiting room or longer appointments to cater for people’s access needs, but we absolutely must address the literal barriers and the dismissive attitudes and ignorance that exists in the mainstream medical profession and its services too. It’s costing lives.

03.01.2022 "Purple Orange was successful in getting a 3-year grant through the NDIA’s ILC (Information Linkages and Capacity Building) individual capacity building grants. We have called the 3-year project SKILL. This stands for Strengthening Knowledge, Information, Links and Leadership. SKILL rural workshops are about to start. The first place we are running them is in Murray Bridge then Kadina, then Nuriootpa and then Broken Hill. These free workshops are for people living with disab...ility, family members and their supporters. Each workshop covers specific topics and areas, and people can register and attend as few or as many as suits them. To achieve the best outcomes, we recommend people to attend all six workshops. The workshops have been co-designed by people living with disability for people living with disability. The facilitators of the workshop are Jennifer Job from Life Upcycled and Cherie Rowett from Heart Choice Enterprises."
