24.01.2022 M O T H E R O C E A N K A T What has having a family taught you? ... It really has taught me how to weed out what is important. The simple things that I took for granted previously. Sleep, exercise and quiet time. I have to focus my energy on the things that count, usually the kids first and then everything else. Best advice to raising confident children? Validate them, let them know that they are seen and heard. Quality time is a big one, love is spelled TIME for kids. What advice would you give your 15 year old self? Be clear with your boundaries. You do not have to be nice to everyone. Let go of what does not serve you. Describe your current profession, if you could change what would you be? I am a Technical Writer. I would like to write about meaningful stuff, like how to break free from the expectations of our modern society. How to live an authentic life. How to have courage to do the things that you love. What is your greatest cause in our world of today? Currently I am campaigning for gender diversity and inclusivity in the workforce. Providing women with the opportunity for meaningful work and to be a mother at the same time. If you had a superpower what would it be? I would control the weather patterns. I would bring rain to WA and Africa - climate change terrifies me. Oh and I would bring swell to Perth.

24.01.2022 Yesterday had a pretty special vibe all day! Then this happened in the late afternoon and that vibe only got better I take my photos for the love of it, also the love of the enjoyment people get when they are the ones captured. So to receive this gorgeous dusty pink twinny from SaltGypsy and Surfing Mums Australia is an absolute buzz and amazing prize for something I love doing! The competition was hot too, so many Surf Mum groups around Australia with exactly the same mo...tivations, we all share such a unique bond and it reflects in the gorgeous pictures entered. Also that’s the board I won in the pic, not sure yet which picture won the competition

23.01.2022 Another snippet of the zero2hero Cape 2 Cape hike-fundraiser! The hikers day 4 starting out from Ellensbrook and finishing at Injidup with a spot of abseiling along the way and ending with a mesmerising bonfire at Premalaya. A huge day which tested both physical and mental strength

23.01.2022 Relying on Strava on the iPhone to capture your runs means it comes in handy to capture your beach finds along the way! Im thinking its a Olive Sea Snake which are normally seen in Exmouth and beyond?? Back when I worked in the dive industry in Exmouth, these guys would be so inquisitive and a little vain checking themselves out in your mask or regulater glass. This poor guy must have got caught up on the Leeuwin Current.

23.01.2022 I can spy a few of my Surfing Mums mug shots on the cutting table What a great initiative to showcase and celebrate women who surfed for the love of it and those who surfed competitively. If your down Yalingyup way from 23rd of November make sure you drop by Aravina Estate to check it out.

23.01.2022 Was given the chance to photograph a very unique race recently! It’s more than just a run, it’s a total physical and mental challenge. The winner, last man standing, went into 41 hours then completed his final 6.7 km loop in a sub 30 minutes, I couldn’t even do those speeds on my first lap. If your up for the challenge check out Birdys Backyard Ultra - Last Man Standing on FB for 2021 Thanks for the opportunity Astrid Volzke and your amazing backyard of scenic backdrops of Lake Towerinning.

22.01.2022 The curtains have come down to reveal my three coastal scenes gracing the walls of local real estate Ray White Keevers Group. This is one of the fine art prints on display. Such a professional and friendly team to work with.

22.01.2022 Recently I was invited to share part of the journey of zero2hero Cape2Cape hiking adventure! A crew of 21 heroic trekkers all hiking 135km's and raising $77,000, to support the mental health programs. This was my day 1, their day 3 Redgate to Ellensbrook, which included the infamous Boodjidup beach section and two river crossings. Ending with massive smile and a spread of pizza and Gage Roads Brew Co refreshments! More pics to follow.....

20.01.2022 M O T H E R O C E A N D E B Growing up I always felt a connection to the beach. When I was near the ocean I felt like this is my place, this place gets me!! It was confusing at times because the rest of my family didnt particularly like the beach and definitely wouldnt crave it like I did. So going through life I quickly realised that if I wanted to be at the beach it was up to me. I remember many hours on buses and walking in the heat to get to the beach. My f...irst share house was walking distance to the beach. My girlfriend and I would head straight to the beach after work, boogie boards and beers in hand, catch waves until exhausted and watch the sunset sitting on our boards enjoying our beer after a great day. I didnt start surfing until after my first child when I was about 30. I had some lessons and loved it, I had that feeling of this is my thing. I dabbled in surfing while having my other two children and then I joined Surfing Mums. Its quite hard to explain to people what I think of Surfing Mums but one thing I say is after Ive hung out with Surfing Mums I feel like telling them all how much I enjoyed their company. You may not even talk to everyone at a session but just being amongst it gives you a special feeling that doesnt seem to be obtainable any other way. I dont think Ill ever be a very good surfer but for some reason for this perfectionist it just doesnt matter. Ill keep squeezing into my wetsuit and keep giving myself little goals that take about a year to achieve but maybe that means by the time Im 80, I could possibly be an awesome Granny surfer that will be giving her children and grandchildren every opportunity to enjoy the ocean just as I did when I was little. But lucky for them they wont have to catch those hot buses like I did, theyll have their Granny enjoying the ocean with them!!! See more

19.01.2022 M O T H E R O C E A N A L L Y What advice would you give your 15 year old self?... Similar to that I gave my 6yo daughter the other day. Its ok to be called weird, quirky, or just different. If everyone was the same life would be dull, not bright, shiny and full of inventions, art and music. Find your crew/tribe/village and ignore the haters, theyre insecure and you scare them. Rock on! See more

17.01.2022 I asked Arnica for a few words....this was just prior to this Pandemic. Currently this beautiful soul is helping keep the community of Surfing Mums fit, active and together through her livestream Pilates! Everyone has a role to play, thank you Arnica. M O T H E R O C E A N A R N I C A ... Ramblings of an Ocean Gower The waves role over me, and wash away any connection to the land. I let the oceans rhythm of water and waves move me. I bob around on my board in a state of quiet, but with an overwhelming feeling of connectedness to the world. Because Im in it, i am immersed, i can feel it flowing between my fingers as a i swirl my hands back and forth trying to hold a position. Its tangible. Even the air is different. For me the ocean holds such feelings of excitement, adventure, fear and froth! all rolled up into a powerful, swirling, beautiful aquamarine ball of energy, spitting and fizzing with potential and life. To gaze out into the ocean, its endless expansive horizon, is to bring calm and release to mind and body. endless boundaries like giant tentacles reaching out and capturing all the other kindred spirits, all searching for the same freedom. Everyone of them different, truly interesting, captivating, awe-inspiring, beautiful, intellectual, conscientious, friends, All sharing that same sparkly stoke. How lucky are we to wake up every morning and know that its all there... right there, and if we want that salt water remedy, all we have to do is reach out. I want my children to have that same connection. I feel privileged and with a sense of responsibility to pass on some of these ocean secrets. I love that i can see the same glimmer in their eyes, i love that we already share it and i am so thankful. This time, this now, is a pivotal one. The ocean is still fairly healthy, and there is still some wilderness. We are the ocean lovers, we are the guardians and protectors, lets look out for it, lets protect it and inspire others to do the same. Imagine what the world would look like if it was full of 100% stoked surfers ! See more

14.01.2022 ALGA Maybe its the lack of socialisation but Im actually enjoying working with my new subjects These weedy sea models are super cheap to work with, great availability, happy to go with the flow and never a complain about the results! Ok so maybe its the isolation and full time parenting/part time work situation that has forced me to look for new artistic challenges as there certainly hasnt been a whole lot of surfing of late and Im definitely missing it!

14.01.2022 Grey skies & neutral tones equaled a magic little morning for this gorgeous family who are now 5. All the best with the new addition x

14.01.2022 M O T H E R O C E A N A M Y The ocean for me provides a never ending source of peace and regeneration. Whether Im in it, under it, on it or looking at it, I have always turned to the ocean... to relax in times of stress, to enjoy in times of happiness, to find comfort in times of sadness, and to heal in times of illness. 09.01.2022 M O T H E R O C E A N B R Y O N Y Who inspires you?... Throughout my life my dad has been a great inspiration to me. This answer is even more poignant now as he passed away suddenly and unexpectedly in April. Dad had a great physical and emotional strength, competing in marathons and triathlons. He shared powerful messages in persistence and determination and offered quiet praise to, not only to my brother and I but the young people he worked with as a teacher. I aspire to continue this tradition in helping young people believe in themselves. My love of the outdoors started young as Dad spent many weekends outdoors with youth groups training for various challenges and our family more often than not tagged along. We spent our spare time on the coast, the moors or the mountains. What has surfing given you? Although I summer surfed from a young age, it didnt truly become my lifestyle until I was in my late teens. Since then, surfing has empowered me and given me the physical and emotional strength to embrace lifes ups and downs. And whats more I see it having the same effect on my two boys. It gives them, strength, confidence, identity and wonderful friends. When were in the ocean, were in the moment and nothing else matters and when we leave the beach we feel freer. See more

03.01.2022 M O T H E R O C E A N B E L I N D A What has having a family taught you?... I have an incredibly close connection with my family. And the Ocean has been the main bearer of this. They have been a huge part of my life. Were all good mates, and have a deep love for each other and almost connected by an invisible wire at times Im sure. The most incredible time spent together that helped develop our relationships, was when all 4 of us were in close confines on our 38 ft cruising yacht Bonniefor 2 years on the Indian Ocean. From Fremantle through The Kimberlys to Indonesia, Thailand & Malaysia and back again. We learnt a lot about ourselves in a completely natural way, interacting with each other in amazing times and at times of stress ( yes some high seas, strong winds, fishing nets at night and lack of sleep from being on night watch). Clear communication was needed to keep things operating smoothly.. (theres no time for debates whilst navigating around rocks to find a safe anchorage); to see the best in each other that helped run things smoothly; and at times to just be at peace and quiet with nothing that had to be said or done... just slinking along with the waves lapping against the hull, to appreciate the night sky, and all the elements of vast openness of the open seas, wind, sun, spray in the face and beautiful ocean creatures that were sometimes thrown at us. (literally fish on the decks!) The highs were super high and a few lows were pretty challenging. But we always worked together to come out on top. The sights, sounds and people we saw and met are ingrained in our memories. The boys were 7 & 9 yrs old then... and now at 20 & 18 we are still a close family unit. I think the main thing I can pass on from this journey is spend time as a family doing things together help develop a strong bond that will see you through life. Now we have packed up the sails and we have all surfed together these past 10 years. We still hold a very close connection with each other particularly when were in the Ocean. I feel its unbreakable.

01.01.2022 M O T H E R O C E A N A N N A Ive been thinking lately about how some of us feel so strongly drawn towards the ocean while others dont. Is it how evolved you are - the less evolved still have that instinctual pull? In that case, I am primitive and so are my Surfing Mums mates! Thank god for this group of women. Its not just the love of a sport that binds us; its the whole outlook on life. Our kids are the loves of our lives but not the only loves. We are onl...y at our best as mums when we feed our hunger for waves and time in the ocean. You can see it in each others eyes when we look out to sea: the need to be out there, and often! In the lead up to having kids, I tried pretty hard to get to a certain level with surfing and kitesurfing because I thought after kids these things would just plateau and progression would be too difficult. Almost like life would be over in a way. I didnt realise that after kids you get a unique drive to continue the things that make you feel great, and really alive. That you need those things more than ever, and you appreciate every second you get doing them, as suddenly there is no time to waste. Its a bit of a gift really. I also hadnt met many women who still frothed on these types of sports after having kids. How that changed when I joined Surfing Mums! Now I love it more than I ever did. I am constantly inspired by these women who rip at every level, and are constantly pushing to make it happen around the chaos of life with little kids. I love the thought of having all these awesome mates into old age, who will never tire of this amazing sport we all love. Its my hope our kids will join us in the water one day, and we can give them the gift of being able to surf, something theyll never lose and can draw on at any point in life as a source of fun, relaxation, meditation and like-minded friends. #surfingmums #thesaltylife #stmperth #perthmums #surfinglife #blackandwhitephotography #portraitphotography #fujifilm #surfer #jettygirl #whitehorses #papersea #surfphotography #portfolioshoot #waterpeople #thesaltsirens #travelplaylive #oceanlifestyle See more
