24.01.2022 Kembla trainers enjoy day out on Cup day The locals dominated Melbourne Cup day at Kembla Grange and leading trainer Gwenda Markwell provided the headline act with a winning double on home turf on Tuesday. Half of the Cup day card was captured by Kembla-trained horses and Markwell - as is often the case - put her mark on the meeting with victories to Point Hope and Speed and Style. The lightly-raced filly Point Hope got Kembla's leading trainer off to the perfect start when t...he daughter of Bull Point was far too classy in the Locopa Designs Millinery Maiden Handicap (1600m). Jockey Alysha Collett had Point Hope ($6) racing in the back half the field before the three-year-old showed a devastating turn of speed in the straight to score by 2-3/4 lengths. Markwell struck again in race seven when she denied fellow Kembla trainer Kerry Parker a double of his own after 3kg claiming apprentice Madison Waters navigating a course closest to the fence on Speed and Style. Waters hugged the running rail in the TC Air & Electric Benchmark 64 Handicap (1200m) and to help Markwell's charge edge out Parker's Virgilio by a long head. Parker didn't go home empty-handed on the afternoon. His lightly-raced filly Don Luigi caused the surprise of the day when leading from barrier to boxes in the Go Hire Maiden Handicap (1200m). The $26 outsider took the shortest way home to outlast the John Thompson-trained Kibosh ($9) with David Pieffer's Go Troppo ($16) a further three quarters of a length away. It would prove to be a day of inches for Parker's yard, which saw it's chance of a double scuppered again by a fellow Kembla stable in the last. Veteran galloper Tenorino ($17) came from near last in the TAB Benchmark 64 Handicap (1600m) only to be gunned down late by the Robert and Luke Price-trained First Courrier ($16) by a nose. The victory provided Kembla-based apprentice Madison Waters with a winning double on the biggest day in Australian racing. Sydney trainers Mark Newnham, Gary Porteilli, Joseph Pride and Hawkes Racing all also claimed wins. 23.01.2022 Race day WRAP UP: Apprentice Tyler Schiller played a starring role and helped leading trainer Gwenda Markwell fire a late one-two punch on her home track at Kembla Grange on Saturday. Schiller had a winning treble on a memorable afternoon with two of those coming for Markwell in the final two events on the card to ensure the leading trainer's hot run of form at the Illawarra Turf Club continued. Schiller, who is indentured to Sydney trainer Mark Newnham, has been steadily fi...nding his feet since making the move up from the Riverina at the beginning of the season. He struck first with the help of his boss when booting home the Newnham-trained Rosa Moyessi in the Frank "Apples" Potter Memorial Maiden Plate (1200m). But it was his double late in the day that had the locals cheering loudest. Schiller thread through the eye of a needle on the Markwell-trained Tic Tock Man to capture the Jamie Innes Maiden Handicap (1400m). He had Tic Tock Man ($2.30 fav) on the fence, midfield in the run but forced his way into the gap to outpoint Kerry Parker's Misty Brook ($18) in a tight run to the post. A brave effort from Tongariro helped the young gun complete his provincial treble and provided Markwell with her first Kembla victory for the month of November. The 2kg claiming youngster was caught three deep on Markwell's son of Animal Kingdom but Tongariro ($9) proved too tough for his more fancied opposition when holding off the Stephen O'Halloran-trained Deadly Impact ($3). Veteran hoop Jeff Penza started the day as the man to beat in the jockeys' challenge and got his day off to the perfect beginning when combining with John O'Shea's pair of Brooks Battle (race one) and Mr Gee (race two). He went within a whisker of completing his own treble in the third and fourth but had to be content with a winning double. Image: Bradley_Photos

17.01.2022 THE POLYTRACK PROVINCIAL CHAMPIONSHIPS QUALIFIER WRAP UP Local hope Electric Girl punched her ticket to the $500,000 Provincial Championships Final after the Gwenda Markwell-trained filly saluted in Saturday’s Kembla Grange Qualifier (1400m). The three-year-old daughter of Declaration Of War showed her toughness to hold off all challengers to win the $150,000 heat on her home track.... Electric Girl ($3.20) edge out the Tracey Bartley-trained McCormack ($5.50) with Kris Lees’ Enchanted Heart ($9) three quarters of a length away in third. She certainly knows how to win a race," Markwell told Sky Thoroughbred Central. "I said to (jockey Travis Wolfgram), be a little bit positive, I know she's got a lot of speed and the light weight on her back. You don't want her back in a crowd of horses, so he rode her a treat." Markwell started two runners in the qualifier and both drew poorly with Electric Girl (barrier 16) outside of Pioneer (barrier 12). Jockey Travis Wolfgram had Electric Girl in a perfect spot one back and one off the fence before getting off Pioneer’s back on the bend. Electric Girl hit the front a long away from home but held on to win by a long neck from McCormack and Enchanted Heart which also booked their spots in the final, to be held at Randwick on April 11. "I went into a lovely position in the one-one," Wolfgram said. "I couldn't believe it, I always felt that I travelled like the winner. "She's only going to get better, it was a good tough win. I was out on my legs and I had every right to get beat, but she's got a heart of gold and she dug deep." The victory was Electric Girl’s third in succession and fourth from seven career starts. It provided Markwell with her second victory in her home heat after capturing the $150,000 qualifier with Mandylion in 2018. Markwell used a similar preparation to get the job done again two years later. The master trainer used an eight-day back up from the Kembla Grange Classic meeting a week earlier to have Electric Girl peaking when it matter most. Markwell used the same approach with Mandylion, which went on to finish ninth in the $500,000 Provincial Championships Final. Electric Girl is on the second line of betting at $8 with TAB.com.au to win the decider, with the Kris Lees-trained Asharani ($4.50 fav) heading the betting after claiming the rescheduled Gosford heat at Newcastle

14.01.2022 RACEDAY REVIEW 25/06/2020 Jockey Sam Clipperton put an exclamation mark on a winning treble on Thursday as he helped unveil a potential star of the future for Peter and Paul Snowden at Kembla Grange. Clipperton was the star of the show at the Illawarra Turf Club and started the day on the perfect note when he scored a dominant win aboard first starter Sahra. The Hinchinbrook filly, which missed out on reaching her reserve of $150,000 at the Inglis Yearling Sales, showed she w...ould have been worth the price tag when she raced away with the Jack Primmer Electronics 2YO Maiden Plate (1000m). Sahra ($4.80) had kicked 3-1/4 lengths clear by the time Clipperton had reached the post with runner up Free State a further four lengths clear of Theresa Bateup’s Divine Breath. Clipperton spoke highly of the Snowdens’ filly after the race but his work at Kembla was far from done. He struck again less than an hour later aboard the Joseph Pride-trained Stargirl in the Pages Hire 3YO Maiden Handicap (1000m). But Clipperton needed to survive a protest to chalk up his double. Stargirl , which had previously be conditioned by Kembla trainer Gwenda Markwell, was wayward over the final 200m and caused interference to stablemate El Cohete. Racing NSW Stewards didn’t deem the incident severe enough to strip Stargirl of the result however Clipperton was reprimanded for his role in the interference. Clipperton’s treble came in tense circumstances as well after only arriving his final strides to help Kembla trainer Graeme Murray get on the board. The Murray-trained Rafha’s Choice ($5.50) surged down the outside to gun down the Bjorn Baker-trained Matowatakpe ($4.60 fav) and Gwenda Markwell’s Charm Offensive ($6) in a desperately tight photo finish. The win of the day undoubtedly went to the impressive Stormy Rock. Trainer Matt Dunn made his way down from his Murwillumbah near the border of NSW and Queensland to see the filly run and she didn’t disappoint. Jockey Kerrin McEvoy had a sit and steer job as Stormy Rock ($2.30 fav) scored by a widening 4-1/2 lengths in the Dean Industrial Maiden Handicap (1200m). Image Bradley_Photos See more

06.01.2022 RACEDAY PREVIEW - TODAY TUESDAY 28/04/2020 Trainer Clarry Conners believes Stolen Jade will get conditions to suit at Kembla Grange as the lightly-raced filly chases a well earned maiden win on Tuesday. Stolen Jade is yet to break through after five starts but has been knocking on the door this preparation and Conners hopes she can finally blow it down third up.... The daughter of So You Think has finished runner-up at both her starts this preparation and heads to Kembla to contest the Search For A Cure Maiden Handicap (1400m). She has been coming along nicely so we will head back to the provincials hoping to get that maiden out of the way, Conners said. She has run two good races this time in and has been an improver. I expect she will be competitive again. She is a good doer at home and is doing really well. Stolen Jade was beaten nearly four-lengths by the classy Archanna second up on a heavy track over 1300m at Warwick Farm but toughed it out over the concluding stages to finish second. She will step up a further 100m in trip on Tuesday and Conners expects she will be suited by the seven furlongs. The 1400m should be no problem as she is by So You Think so I expect that and the big straight at Kembla Grange should suit her, he said. Stolen Jade is favourite with the bookies and was a $3.10 chance on Monday morning. Conners also has three-year-old Seporto in the Support Our Paramedics Maiden Plate (1600m). The son of Sepoy is yet to salute in 13 starts but Conners says Seporto has been ‘working hard’ and expects a decent showing second up. He ran a fairly good race first-up over 1350m, which is too short for him anyway, Conners said. He ran a couple of close placings and has been working hard in trackwork. He actually works alongside her. He is going well but I think if he was third up I would be more confident. In-form jockey Shaun Guymer will pilot both of Conners’ runners and has a strong book across the afternoon. Guymer was red hot at Goulburn on Sunday, riding a winning treble. He is riding in good form so hopefully he can ride a couple more for us on Tuesday, Conners said. Race one on the seven event card at Kembla Grange jumps at 1.05pm. THE COURSE IS CLOSED TODAY TO PATRONS DUE TO COVID19. SEE ALL THE RACES ON SKY RACING. Image: Bradley_Photos
