12.01.2022 #KempLaw Spinal Cord Injury Motor vehicle accidents are the most common cause of spinal cord injuries. Motorcycle, auto, and truck accidents cause almost 50% of spinal injuries each year.... The second greatest cause of spinal cord injuries is a fall, which accounts for 31% of these injuries. A significant portion of these falls occurs on-the-job at construction sites. Falls from ladders and scaffolding are common in construction. A person over 65, who suffers from a spinal cord injury, probably fell to cause it. The third most common cause of a spinal cord injury is experiencing a violent attack, such as being injured by a gunshot or a knife. Surprisingly, only a small amount of spinal cord injuries are attributed to sports activities. This group includes people who dive unsafely in shallow water and hit their head on something. Finally, the smallest portion of spinal cord injuries is caused by diseases like arthritis, cancer, osteoporosis, and inflammation of the spinal cord. A spinal cord injury is dangerous. 03.01.2022 #KempLaw This is Ghanim testing out one of his two robotic arms. Ghanim is an Iraqi asylum seeker who lost his arms in a workplace accident. He was operated on by surgeon, former Iraqi asylum seeker and 2020 Australian of the year, Dr Munjed Al Muderis. Ghanim’s family were allowed to visit him from Finland where they are seeking asylum but they were only offered short term visas. His future is uncertain and if he’s not offered permanent protection he could face deportation back to Iraq.
