24.01.2022 How Get Real Evolved By Ken Roberts Get Real was conceived in 2016 after I had been working in Laos for three years. When I returned to Australia, there was a distinct disenchantment on site. Which I sensed before, but couldn’t put my finger on why. I guess there had been a global recession, a downturn in the industry, and the levels of disbelief and mistrust in the system may have emerged from that. Nobody would say anything publicly, only in the lunch rooms or behind closed...Continue reading
19.01.2022 How to reduce incidents? "If I were to justify philosophically in this book the reasons you should be safe, to be healthy and capable of meeting your responsibilities, it’s the same tactics we use in the workplace. With much the same effect. It doesn’t work. People still take risks. People still get hurt. So why do we persist along these lines with our safety rhetoric?" (excerpt from "Get Real") Get Real is more than a book. It’s a manual that provides a core set of principle...s and proven strategies to get the best out of you and the people you work with. If you feel people are doing the opposite of what you expect them to do, dumbfounding you with their decisions when carrying out work tasks, then you’ve come to the right place. Get Real is dedicated to creating workplaces where vision and purpose is driving its safety. Where people can develop a sense of worth in their work. It promotes the idea that a workforce can hold each other’s feet to the fire in support of a common cause. Where trust is king and agreements are firm. It’s a fair day’s work for a fair day’s 'play'. We firmly believe it is time to "speak out" and reveal the secret underlying reasons why we still have accidents in the workplace. Once you've read Get Real you’ll soon discover why speaking out in the workplace is so essential... and why so many people aren't willing to do it. See more
15.01.2022 Get Real is a hard-hitting look at Theo’s accident, why it happened, and how it relates to all accidents. It will challenge common workplace assumptions and practices and reveal parts of our human nature we rarely discuss. We offer refreshingly straight talk about what’s wrong with the way people think and talk about safety. We firmly believe we need to share Theo’s story warts and all. People need to hear the truth. Even if it flies in the face of our current model of under...standing. You won’t be asked to put your feet up and relax but strap yourself in and hang on. You’re in for quite a ride. You are about to get some big Aha! moments like we did writing Get Real. That's why we firmly believe it is time to speak up and reveal the secret underlying reasons people have accidents in the workplace. Very soon you’ll discover why speaking up in the workplace is so essential. Take care out there...
14.01.2022 Is safety what you do or how you feel?
02.01.2022 We all make mistakes. It's what makes us human. But what if you had to wake up every day and relive the same ill-fated mistake for the rest of your life. No one knows this feeling more than Theo Venter. We first met on a major mining operation in Western Australia. I was helping a contracting company meet their safety requirements when he presented the most remarkable story. An horrific workplace accident that nearly took his life. The only man known to survive 22.000 volts t...hrough the heart and live to tell the tale. It was a profound presentation. I was deeply moved as he talked about the events of his accident. When suddenly, all of the accidents I’d investigated over the years came to mind. In a semi-dreamlike state I could make a connection with Theo’s experience and all accidents. It was like a fog had lifted and I was being revealed a truth for the first time. An epiphany moment that I needed to share with him after his talk. But how? He was flying out that afternoon. What happened after that changed my life forever. I certainly wasn’t prepared for it. I just knew I needed to meet him and relate what I experienced. We discovered that our schedules crossed paths the following week. Theo was contracted to a remote South Australian mine site, and so was I. An amazing coincidence, or was it? Get Real is the culmination of a meeting of minds, two kindred spirits. The result is a book that foretells how all workplaces will be operating in the not too distant future. Values such as accountability, ownership and walking the talk will become second nature. But how will it occur? It seems a far cry from today's workplaces. The answer may be in the changing of one simple habit. This process may just transform the world!

11.12.2021 "Safety is NOT your goal. It’s a RESULT which we have no control. We can only control our own ACTIONS and BEHAVIOURS. These are things we set GOALS by."
27.11.2021 Theo and I had a great day with the Leadership team at Ausgroup in Kwinana. Very proactive and progressive company. A special surprise... Nico saw Theo speak for the first time after 15 years. Nico was in the basket with Theo Venter when he was electrocuted. Very powerful moment.
18.11.2021 A Different Perspective. Einstein said you can’t solve a problem at the level it was created. Therefore Theo and I have flipped the idea of workplace safety on its head. Instead of creating more procedures and enforcing new rules, we unwound the situation and met the workforce exactly where they're at. Unfortunately, their still trying to meet minimum standards and daily requirements while finding some semblance of job satisfaction at the same time. This is where you can turn... the daily grind into a source of satisfaction, transforming pleading and coercion into desire and intrinsic motivation. Get Real provides a solution so that workers and leaders can be absolutely "real" with each other about everything that happens in their workplace, and to resolve workplace issues involving everyone’s combined input and experience. Not just relying on leaders to come to the rescue. The workforce is the solutionnot the problem. This shift in thinking means 90% of a successful safety campaign is cultural and does not require more paperwork, procedures or systems. The biggest problem companies face with any program is trying to implement change. Without across the board buy-in at all levels a safety program is doomed. So we suggest you don’t implement change. Work with what you’ve got. Instil a level of authenticity and openness and bring your organisation closer together. Sound scary? You'll be surprised. This book details how learnings pass freely into the culture and workers feel rewarded for being a part of the process. This empowerment creates further satisfaction and feelings of accomplishment. The very drivers of voluntary operational discipline. This process is known as a habit loop. And a good one at that. But you might be more aware of bad habits, the ones that cause accidents. The workplace is constantly running hundreds if not thousands of habit loops every day. By changing just one single "keystone" habit you are about to change the way you approach your workplace forever. "Once you break a habit into its components, you can fiddle with the gears."
