10.01.2022 Dear Friends of the Kendall National Violin Competition and of Kendall PhiloMusica It is with great sadness that I bring you news of the passing of Graham Caldersmith, OAM, founding master Luthier of the Kendall National Violin Competition and one of its life members. With his unique vision of concert violins made from Australian tone-woods Graham inspired and generously guided the Kendall National Violin Competition from its earliest days to became a powerful sponsor and sup...porter, a mentor to younger violin makers and an inspiration to young violinists throughout Australia and their audiences. Graham‘s leadership of the competition was imperceptible in its power and persistent in its energy. His sensitive and intelligent understanding of music, acoustics and craft enabled him to create instruments of the highest tonal and artistic possibilities. His humanity inspired musicians and all those who met him with a lasting commitment to music and its ultimate purpose the enrichment and transcendence of our lives. Following a valiant battle with cancer, Graham passed away today at Wauchope Hospital. I was privileged to be able to play some Bach and Mozart for him in the final hours of his life and cherish always a most humbling gift, his 60th viola which will soon sound in the Kendall School of Arts and beyond. Our thoughts are with his family and in particular with his partner in life, Angela. Yours sincerely Goetz Richter
