25.01.2022 Have you ever heard of, been to or lived in Mount Barker? Let us take you there Your State Library is featuring WA regional towns on its Facebook Page. Its an... opportunity to share stories, old photos and connect with old friends. Recently featured Tom Price, Paraburdoo, Busselton, Mandurah, Wittenoom and Kalgoorlie... Mount Barker is located 363 kilometres south-east of Perth in the Great Southern. The traditional owners are the Minang Noongar people who have been in the area for thousands of years. The Aboriginal name for Mount Barker Hill is Pwakkenbak. The area was first explored by Europeans in 1829. Mt Barker was named after Captain Collet Barker, King George Sounds (now Albany) commandant. Early European settlers began arriving in the 1830s. The opening of the Perth/Albany Railway in 1889 helped to ensure the towns future. The first store, school and a town hall opened in the early 1890s. Solider settlers moved into the area after WWI and many became farmers. In 1918 the Mt Barker Co-operative was established by the local Fruit Growers Association. Apple orchards in the region and thrived until the mid-1960s. Today, wheat, canola, plantation timber, sheep and cattle are some of the main agricultural activities around Mount Barker. Plantagenet Wines established in 1968 was one of the first wineries in the region and others followed. Mount Barker has also produced some magical AFL footballers Jim and Phil Krakouer and artists. The town of Mount Barker is also home to numerous historic buildings including St Werburghs Chapel, built in 1872 with walls made from chopped straw, clay and woodwork formed from local jarrah. The old police station, (1868) is now a museum. The Plantagenet Hotel was built between 1912 and 1914. The verandah includes apple motifs, in celebration of the flourishing apple industry.
