24.01.2022 Adding to previous comments regarding the over-emphasis on ATAR for deciding the level of maths to study for the HSC, the Mathematical Association of NSW has some useful information at https://www.mansw.nsw.edu.au/documents/item/124
15.01.2022 From next year Western Australian students enrolled in the medium and high level maths subjects will get a 10 per cent bonus on their ATAR scores. The former WA chief scientist, Professor Lyn Beazley, said people needed to realise three-quarters of future jobs required STEM skills. Professor Beazley, a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering and 2015 WA Australian of the Year, said maths should be compulsory to Year 12. 13.01.2022 ABC TV’s ‘Four Corners’ on July 4 looked at the future of work those jobs that will disappear and those that will be created and in demand. The reporter repeated the often-quoted statistic that three-quarters of future jobs will require skills in STEM subjects and that Australian students are poorly prepared because of declining enrolments in these subjects. On the positive side, examples were given of primary students programming a robot, a community initiative where children and a parent met on Saturdays to learn computer coding and the Australian Science and Mathematics School - a government-funded secondary school located in the grounds of Flinders University (https://www.asms.sa.edu.au).
10.01.2022 Australia’s Chief Scientist, Alan Finkel, recently wote in the June 2016 issue of Focus (http://www.atse.org.au//196-science-vision-15-years-from-n): ‘At the national level, I am joining others in calling for universities to require intermediate or advanced mathematics across the board. It staggers me that 13 of the 34 engineering courses offered in Australia accept fundamental maths as a prerequisite even though this does not include calculus, and one of our engineering courses does not require any Year 12 mathematics at all’ (Note: In NSW intermediate mathematics is 2U Mathematics, advanced is Extension and fundamental is General Mathematics)
06.01.2022 The images show a hypocycloid and an epicycloid, formed when a circle rolls around another circle. There is an interactive app, 'Interactive Trochoids', on my website where the effect of a change in the parameter can be explored.
