17.01.2022 EMBODIED WISDOM If we can practice yoga as a process of coming home to the body, of tuning into the physical insights that are held in our nooks and crannies, and experiencing what lies beyond the constant narration of the mind, it offers an opportunity to tap into a deep wisdom. As we tune into these more subtle messages, we learn so much about ourselves and our relationship to others. We learn to listen, to understand and to respond to our needs in new ways. We learn to r...ecognise the deep knowing that resides in us, and can use it to find a deeply embodied sense of wellbeing. For movement facilitators, this also means learning to trust the wisdom held in other people's bodies. Offering guidance, and supporting people to tune into their own innate knowing. It means acknowledging that each human is the expert of their own embodied experience. We can't hear the messages being sent within another body, and we should never speak over those whispers. On the International Yoga Day June, 21, 2020 I want to ask us not to uncritically celebrate a holiday that is anti-Black and discriminatory. International Yoga day, brought forth by the Modi Government of India, unanimously accepted and ratified by the UN is expressly a part of the Modi governments described Hindu Soft power. On International Yoga Day’s past Modi requires all government workers to practice yoga, positioned himself as a quasi-spiritual political leader and then excluded and punished religious And ethnic minorities such as Muslims, Sikhs, Jains, adivasis, Dalits and other target identities in India. Many, though not all, are Black folks and this continues the colorism and anti Black discrimination in our own communities. Modi and Trump get along well and just after Howdy Modi and Namaste Trump Trump visits India in Feb 2020 Modi’s nationalistic rhetoric has fueled anti Muslim riots where he stood by and allowed paramilitary and government police to harm and kill Muslims in India under his watch through his tenure and in March this year. He has also jailed intellectuals and activists with no cause. And enacted a citizenship Bill that expressly targets Muslims. If you stand against white supremacy why would you condone Hindu supremacy? International yoga day isn’t an innocuous holiday celebrating all things yoga. It’s a project of Hindu nationalism. Though yoga is unity this is harmful to so many. And it’s not the first time yoga has been used to exclude and separate. We can’t get to unity without looking at separation. Yoga was never under the purview of one religion only and has been influenced by and influenced many. However it has in the past and is currently being used as a vehicle for Hindu Nationalism and Hindu supremacy in India. 01.01.2022 YOGA THERAPY 'The rich and ancient wisdom of yoga provides the context for yoga therapy. The practice must be completely grounded in this foundation to retain it's full potential for improving wellbeing and to be understood as a distinct integrative healthcare profession. When yoga practices are taken outside this framework and applied through a solely biomedical lens, for instance, they may lose their effectiveness and therapeutic potential creating misunderstandings of the... practices themselves'. Marlysa Sullivan So when I get asked by healthcare workers what are some good practices for anxiety, prescriptive practices may be helpful but do not address the underlying cause. This limits the full scope of the yoga therapy profession and possibly starts to mimic other modalities like psychology or physical therapies. It excites me to know that we can now link yoga therapy concepts to philosophical and neurophysiological ideas such as phenomenology, eudamonic wellbeing, ethical inquiry, polyvagal theory, interoception, top down and bottom up regulation and resilience. 01.01.2022 DOUGHNUT ECONOMY Have you heard?! Amsterdam has decided to implement Kate Raworth's Doughnut Economics as a way to recover from the current crisis. If you're not familiar with the doughnut, basically it's a model that's all about moving away from the circular system of goods and money that prioritises growth for growth's sake, and instead focuses on creating a more regenerative and sustainable world for humans and the environment. In the centre of the doughnut the do...ughnut hole is a place where we avoid putting pressure on the planet, but in doing so fall short of providing basic human needs. If we stray too far from the centre, however, we break through the ecological ceiling and threaten our environment. The doughnut itself is the "sweet spot" where both humans and the planet can thrive. Doughnut Economics is a cute name, but it turns out it's also a pretty viable alternative to a broken system.
