25.01.2022 ‘ ’ My fascination with the Kimberley region of WA and its spectacular waterfalls inspired me to return to film a documentary at the tail end of the wet season. While watching the sun rise over King George Falls, our celebrity guest, Ray Martin, asked me what I was going to shoot. I didn’t have an answer because, at that stage, the light was pretty bland. I felt I should just enjoy my time there and trust that everything would work out. I did manage to captu...re some lovely shots that day, but when it came time to select an image to print, I chose this one I had taken on a previous trip. The moral of this story is sometimes it’s more important to enjoy a location and not feel pressured to come up with a winning shot. Just relax, as you may already have the prize in hand. . . 25.01.2022 ‘ ’ Polar bears congregate around Cape Churchill from mid-October, waiting for Hudson Bay to freeze over. When the ice becomes thick enough to withstand their weight, the bears disperse onto the frozen sea to prey upon seals. Polar bears are very persistent hunters. They will find an opening in the ice and wait patiently for seals to pop their heads up. On this day, the ice had begun to form, and the bears were beginning to venture out onto the frozen bay. From a he...licopter I found this pair, both staring intently as they awaited their prey. Only one bear broke its gaze to look up at me while the other remained vigilant. This is the most important time of year for polar bears. The seals they catch and eat during this time will sustain them for months. I love the graphic simplicity of this shot and the way it conveys a sense of scale . . For more details about this print please visit: https://bit.ly/2VmD3tU

25.01.2022 ‘ ’ I first photographed Remarkable Rocks many years ago, in the days of film. But today’s digital cameras, with their ultra-sensitive sensors, actually see better in low light than the human eye. So when we were invited to Kangaroo Island to stay with friends, I was keen to explore more of the island’s natural treasures and try a night shot of Remarkable Rocks. This rock formation in the foreground has always fascinated me it’s clearly the work of a master s...culptor. Sea mist was rolling in over the cliffs and the scene was illuminated by the full moon, without any artificial light. Away in the distance, you can see Cape de Couedic Lighthouse. Remarkable Rocks are aptly named and they are especially remarkable at night. Just a little light from the moon makes for an intriguing picture that goes beyond what the eye can see. . . 25.01.2022 ‘ ’ The promontory of the Skillion remains one of my favourite local scenes. It commands the coastline around Terrigal in every direction: in this shot, it is seen majestic in the light of the low rising sun. Yet even this massive rockform bears its scars. In recent years the local council deemed the cliffs a danger to recreational fishermen underneath. Fearing liability, they employed contractors to explode a supposedly loose section of rock. The rock in ques...tion, however, was unmoved by these titanic efforts, and even more money had to be spent stabilising the site. After more than $1million had been wasted, the headland was finally left in peace. Entitled Creation Reigns, this shot celebrates the permanence of nature when confronted with the interference of humankind! . . For more details about this print please visit: https://bit.ly/3mjtUOf

24.01.2022 'Eye to Eye' There is an old Yiddish proverb which says, The eyes are the mirror of the soul. And it is interesting that whenever there are eyes in a photo, our eyes are naturally drawn towards them. It seems we instinctively know that true connection is made through eye to eye contact. To me, this magnificent lion speaks volumes as he gazes straight down the barrel of my lens into my eyes. You can see real strength and patience in his features he has an aura of calm and ...dignity about him. He is letting me know that he sees me and his intense gaze seems to be posing the questions, Who are you, and what are you up to? When I look at this photo, I feel like he’s staring right through me, into my soul. He exudes such raw power and inner strength. Lions are the kings of the jungle. They don’t seek votes or the approval of others. They have strength and power and they know their authority. This print is part of my new exhibition, Waking in the Wild, which is now showing at my Central Coast Gallery. I will be in the Gallery all weekend if you'd like to come and say hi. I can tell you stories behind my images and answer any questions you have. There's nothing quite like seeing an image printed and framed elegantly on a wall. You can see so much more detail that on a computer screen or phone. For all the information about my new exhibition go here: https://kenduncan.com/whats-on I hope to see you there!

22.01.2022 ‘ ’ Lake Eyre covers a huge area around 9,500 square kilometres. (No wonder our early explorers thought they had found an inland sea.) And there are many different parts, with dramatically different characteristics, all just begging for photographers to find their own interpretation. In early 2019, huge downpours of rain brought devastating floods to parts of Queensland and the Northern Territory. The water made a slow and torturous journey south, filling the Geor...gina, Dimantina and Warburton Rivers and flooding desert towns as it travelled. A second rain system brought even more water, extending across vast flood plains and eventually flowing into Lake Eyre, bringing life and colour to this dry country. This view of one of the river deltas leading into the northern end of Lake Eyre looked to me like Neptune’s trident. I love the strong blue colour of the water contrasting with the surrounding flood plain. . . For more details about this print please visit: https://bit.ly/3o0B7o6

20.01.2022 Hi everyone just recently I went to an exhibition at The Entrance gallery with my daughter which was being put on by an art collective called The Crud Muffins. When I went in, it was as if I had been transported back in time to my past when I was young and had so many eclectic friends. We were all on a journey of discovery and nothing seemed impossible. I loved the exhibition as it was an immersive art space they had created. The artists were so passionate and I just love ...people willing to follow their dreams. They art collective also run art workshops where they help people find their artistic expression and a sense of community. They think differently on many things than I do but that’s what makes our world an interesting and exciting place. They all had such beautiful hearts and I loved their exhibition as it was so full of life and colour. If you’re on the Central Coast of NSW check out their exhibition. It’s still on in The Entrance Gallery at The Entrance until October the 25th. Say hello for me. See more

19.01.2022 :: Top Nine :: Looking back on the year 2020. As voted by you, here are my top nine posts. I would like to thank you all for your support, comments and encouragement this year. It’s been a year no one will forget.... Happy New Year!!

19.01.2022 DIAMOND DUST As evening approached in Churchill, Canada, it was so cold that ice crystals were sprinkling down on us. And here in this divine golden light, with a chilled out polar bear resting on a frozen lake, a strange vertical rainbow appeared. My guide explained this is called a Sun Dog (the scientific name is parhelion). It is an atmospheric phenomenon consisting of a bright spot on one or both sides of the sun, caused by the refraction of sunlight on flat, hexagonal ...ice crystals (or diamond dust). Wow! I felt like I was in a fantasy land: bathed in amazing light, with a handsome bear, being sprinkled with diamond dust. What a way to end a glorious day. Only 300 Limited edition prints available worldwide. Prints are available framed and unframed. For more details about this print please visit: https://bit.ly/3cE84Dv

18.01.2022 This photo was taken during last year’s Sydney New Year’s Eve Fireworks display, heralding in the new year. You can see the message projected on the bridge pylons wishing us all a Happy New Year for 2020. Well what a year it has been! 2020 has shaken the world and challenged many of us to consider what is important to us.... So what is important? Do we allow this pandemic to divide us? Do we just find comfort for ourselves in our own bubbles in the midst of turmoil? Or do we realise that we are all in this together and we need to pull together like never before? Our human race is not a race against each other. The majority of people want peace, truth and unity. If we are united we can conquer anything - but when divided, we will fall. I wish you a new year of hope and peace in the midst of whatever storms we face. We will overcome when we realise we need connection with each other and the amazing planet we all call home. So join me on the peace train and let’s be the change we want to see for our wonderful planet in 2021. Love and Blessings Ken Duncan, OAM

17.01.2022 ‘’ The Flinders Ranges is a region that continues to grow on me. It changes all the time, according to the season and the weather. With every visit, I find myself further unfolding the layers of its languid landscapes and becoming more in tune with the spirit of the place. On this trip, I was blessed to find wildflowers prolifically carpeting many parts of the Flinders, including Old Wilpena Station. This is one of the most scenically beautiful pastoral settlements ...in South Australia. It was a working station for 135 years, before slipping into retirement in 1985. The settlement is now a tranquil archive of pastoral history, as well as an important Aboriginal heritage site. The buildings scattered amongst these fields have stories to tell of intrigue and adventure in a bygone era. I called this image bejewelled because the flowers look like jewels scattered across this classic Australian landscape. . . For more details about this print please visit: https://bit.ly/3kyHJrI

17.01.2022 ‘ ’ Patience is a great virtue in life and can often be one of the hardest to achieve. Landscape photography has been very good for me in this respect. To get this shot I had to turn up faithfully day after day for weeks, waiting for the right light. It is helpful to realise that we are not always in control of our circumstances, only our attitudes to them. So often we can miss our miracles because we get discouraged and give up just before the breakthrough c...omes. . ‘ ’. For more details about this print please visit: https://bit.ly/2ILORmV

15.01.2022 ‘ ’ A vast crowd of sunflowers greets the rising sun, in a scene as bold as a classic Van Gogh. The timing of my visit to Kansas had been carefully planned to coincide with the peak blooming season. You can imagine my disappointment when I arrived and found the state´s crop had flowered two weeks early. But I didn´t give up, and my inquiries led me to this farm. A tornado had destroyed the farmer´s first crop, and so he had replanted. This spectacular field of yel...low was the result countless sun-bright heads stretching as far as the eye could see. It was a lesson to all who saw it that it´s never too late to start over. Swipe to see full image. . . For more details about this print please visit: https://bit.ly/2UQbkBR

15.01.2022 GOLDEN DAYS I love this historic cottage because it captures a slice of Australia´s living heritage. The first part of the house was built by Jon Krohmann in 1855 while establishing market gardens to supply the goldfields. By 1870, the Gold Rush had reached Krohmann´s own town of Hill End. Krohmann prospered and the house grew. Today his dwelling is lovingly cared for by his own descendants. On the day I visited, the weather seemed too overcast for photography, and so I escap...ed with my father (who was travelling with me) for a steak at the local pub. Suddenly we saw the sunset just peeping through the clouds and we raced back for this brief but unforgettable view. I photographed the scene from the top of my vehicle, which helped give the shot great depth and captured a delightful fusion of colour and rustic charm. 14.01.2022 Tips For Photographing Landscapes Often when you are traveling you find locations that you feel have potential. At the time you are there the angle of the sun or the weather conditions may not be dramatic enough. It could be the wrong season with no wild flowers. It could be lack of rain or water in creeks there are thousands of variables. So when I find a new location I will often photograph it just in case this is the best this scene may look. Often though I will work o...n a location viewing it in different seasons and conditions. Some sites I have been working on for years and many I am still working on. Sometimes the conditions come together and the magic of the scene is revealed and sometimes I may be dreaming but the pursuit is what makes it all fun. Would love to hear your thoughts...

13.01.2022 ‘ ’ On a photo safari, often people drive around endlessly searching for opportunities. But this day, I just felt to wait at the waterhole and allow the wildlife to come to us. As time went by some of the people with me became concerned that we were missing other viewing opportunities. But I felt we should wait to see what would unfold. Just as some in our group were reaching the limits of their patience, this tigress came down to drink. Our guide had told us she... had cubs, but at first they were nowhere to be seen. However, once she was sure it was safe, she began calling her cubs and they carefully approached to join her at the waterhole. The whole time they were drinking they remained cautious and alert for any signs of danger. We quietly waited for them to look our way and this shot was our prize. Everyone was glad we had waited for this magical moment. It just goes to show, patience has its rewards. . . For more details about this print please visit: https://bit.ly/3q5M60m

13.01.2022 :: Havasu Falls :: The veil-like Havasu Falls plunge over a moonscape of rocks in the lower Grand Canyon. Here, the high mineral content of the water has created fantastic patterns on the cliff-face, like frozen cataracts sculpted in the stone. We spent three winter days enjoying this area. Although other visitors occasionally turned up (and then left again) we were the only ones who stayed and camped. How important it is to spend enough time in a place to truly begin to feel... its character. As this shot shows, once the right light had arrived, our reward was a scene filled with the subtleties of texture and color. . . For more details about this print please visit: www.kenduncan.com

10.01.2022 NEWS.COM.AU just posted an article titled ‘Rainfall at Uluru Creates Magical and Rare Waterfall Scenes’. I have been fortunate to witness this phenomenon about four times in my life. The Rock itself is a majestic formation at any time. But after heavy rain, with rivulets of water running down its sides and creating waterfalls, it is truly spectacular. This photo is one I took after heavy rain. Have you been fortunate enough to witness rain on Uluru? 10.01.2022 FINDING THE RIGHT LOCATION I love driving in the country or in the outback looking for new photo locations. As you drive along taking in the scenery it is like you enter into a zone where your cares and thoughts are put into perspective by the grandeur of creation. I believe you begin to see things clearer. We are blessed in Australia to have so many wide open spaces and there are so many hidden locations yet to be captured.... Even locations that may have been seen before can be captured in totally new ways or with amazing lighting or weather conditions. If you have Patience, persistence and passion anything is possible.

10.01.2022 LIGHTNING OVER JERUSALEM Lightning strikes Jerusalem in the pre-dawn darkness, as the city waits in expectation of a new day. To me, the imagery of this shot is deepened by Jerusalem´s turbulent history. How often have these walls borne the brunt of forces larger than themselves! But there is something else too. We read in the Gospels that when Jesus was crucified outside Jerusalem, darkness came over the whole land. Breathing his last, Jesus proclaimed: It is finished! and... the very earth quaked. His death brought eternal salvation for all who would believe. It was like light striking the earth from the heavens the offer of a new hope for the world. 07.01.2022 ‘ ’ A boat is by far the best way to get around the dense wetland of the Pantanal. Indeed, it is virtually the only way. But you still have to be very careful. The area is teeming with wildlife, including giant snakes, crocodiles and the extremely well camouflaged Jaguar. The Jaguars in this area are renowned for their stealth and for being shy and elusive. But they often come down to the riverbanks in search of prey or just to sun themselves in the early morning an...d late afternoon. We were fortunate to spot this beauty peering out at as through the undergrowth. We had to get close to find an angle through the foliage, ever conscious that she could jump into the boat and attack without notice. Here, the jaguar just looks very contented, looking right at me, saying I See You! . . For more details about this print please visit: https://bit.ly/3dzOxT4

03.01.2022 ‘ ’ A rare fall of rain sends water rushing down the gullies of Uluru, fresh and pure and white as the tears of God. I believe this photograph is prophetic to our nation. God is grieved by the terrible division between black and white, and here, in the very heart of Australia, we see His pain. The Spirit only works in unity. Australia will only fulfil its rightful purpose if we move together, putting aside our past and looking forward to our future. Our desti...ny is controlled by something far greater than race. 02.01.2022 ‘ ’ Glenworth Valley is a magnificent horse-riding establishment at Peats Ridge where horses can be hired and ridden unsupervised over thousands of acres of beautiful pasture. This shot, taken just after daybreak, shows the horses crashing through the creek as the daily round up unfolds. The sun had just broken through the lifting fog as the horses hurtled towards the creek. I was balanced precariously on a gatepost as the horses galloped up the bank from the c...reek. I had only one chance for this and as the horses thundered through the narrow gate, the reverberating power of their passing almost knocked me from my post. . .
