24.01.2022 The Sodeisha movement in Japan had a big influence on my practice and my connection with clay both functional and non-functional. The literal translation of Sodeisha to me is: So hashiru/run Dei doro/mud Sha group ... Running through mud! The artists behind this sculptural clay movement, which was established in 1946, often had a traditional ceramics background but were also trying to push the boundaries of the Japanese ceramic scene. The attitudes that drove this movement have stayed with me throughout my career and even now keep me going and inspire me to try something new. I’m really looking forward to being part of this exhibition at Newcastle Art Gallery opening on 2 March, ‘Sodeisha: connected to Australia’. https://www.nag.org.au//Fu/SODEISHA-connected-to-Australia Image by Carl Warner: Kenji Uranishi Uzu (Swirl) 2015 19x31x31

21.01.2022 What a wonderful week I had in Hobart! I'm still trying to process all the new information and inspiration as well as the history, the beautiful nature and the patterns I noticed around Hobart...but most of all, I caught up with some great friends, and made some lovely new ones. Thank you so much to the The Australian Ceramics Triennale for involving me in the program and congratulations on a fantastic conference! I didn't want to come home!!

15.01.2022 'Sodeisha: Connected to Australia' at Newcastle Art Gallery closes this weekend. I was honoured to be part of this special exhibition representing the Australian selection of artists...but of course I also felt so closely connected to the Japanese artists too. One of the exhibiting artists from the Sodeisha side was my university teacher's wife - it was so nice to 'meet' her work in Australia! This is one of my pieces in the exhibition that I hadn't seen in ten years since it... joined the Newcastle Collection - it was nice to 'meet' that little one again too!
