09.01.2022 The True Meaning Of A Black Belt! It’s more than just a piece of cloth! and what it takes to earn it, or hang it on a wall. Shodan (first degree black belt) ...is not the end point of your martial arts study! ... Sho means first, new, beginning; and dan means step: so the basic meaning of Shodan is first step. Your Obi is much more than just the piece of cloth you wear around your Dogi waist to hold it together! A black belt is not something you wear, it's something you become. Depending on how hard and long you trained,general attitude in the dojo, also your attendance and instructor's method of teaching. This journey requires 4 to 5+ years of continued training. Also commitment, dedication,patience and tolerance not to mention physical and mental strength to endure a 5 Hour hard grading with 40 1 1/2 minute Rounds of kumite. Sadly today I have noticed many treat a black belt like getting a driving licence, going for a course,doing what they need to pass exam, hang certificate on the wall so friends can see. Theres no end in Budo Karate...Once you earn shodan ,e.t.c....The real adventure begins, to many a way of life. Osu Only those who attempt the absurd can achieve the impossible.
