24.01.2022 You may be surprised to know that on average, adults sit for nine hours a day, which increases the risk of heart disease and Type 2 diabetes. Everyone from tod...dlers to older adults can improve their heart health by breaking up the length of time they sit during the day. The best place to start is ensuring you're meeting the recommended activity levels of 30 minutes on five or more days a week. The easiest way to meet these guidelines is by choosing an activity that you enjoy and know you can stick to! Other ways you can sit less and move more is: Limit your time on social media, TV, and phone When watching TV, take some breaks during commercials to walk around the house or do some housework Replace watching TV in the evening with taking a walk Try standing while you read or whilst completing easy tasks at work Take a break every 30 minutes to stand and stretch Consider using a sit-stand workstation Choose to do manual tasks where you can, such as washing your car by hand instead of using a drive-through car wash Looking for some inspiration to get up and moving? 23.01.2022 Of the 1.3 million Australians living with diabetes, more than half will experience mental health issues in their lifetime. Today is World Mental Health Day 202...0 and an important reminder that your mental health matters. This year has been tougher than most and we have all had to adjust to new ways of living during the pandemic - this hasn't been easy for anyone, let alone people with diabetes (managing the condition can be tiring enough as it is). We’re here to remind everyone that mental health is just as important as your physical health. Seeking help or treatment for mental health is proactive for your health. You see your GP if something is wrong with your physical health, our mental health should be no different. Thank you to all the mental healthcare professionals doing their part every day and to all the people who are part of the diabetes community. We are here for you, now and into the future. Our Helpline is available if you need to speak to someone 1800 637 700. After all, we all need a little extra help sometimes.

12.01.2022 UPDATE: Ambulance Victoria is experiencing an extremely high demand for ambulances in the metropolitan region. All Code 1 (the most urgent and critically unwell...) patients are being seen in a timely manner. However there are delays for Code 2 and 3 patients, who may require assistance but do not have a life threatening illness. We take this opportunity to remind the community to please call NURSE ON CALL (1300 60 60 24) or visit their local GP service if their illness is not an emergency. Our number one priority is to provide care to the sickest Victorians who require lifesaving assistance. We thank the community and media for sharing this message and helping us save Triple Zero (000) for emergencies.
11.01.2022 World Diabetes Day 2020 is officially here It’s also NAIDOC Week. So we are marking these two special events by celebrating the history, culture and achieveme...nts of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Nurse Diabetes Educators. Diabetes Australia, CEO Professor Greg Johnson said First Nations nurses are playing a major role in helping to meet the challenges of the diabetes epidemic. There are approximately 3000 First Nations nurses in Australia, and I take this opportunity today to recognise their contribution and, on behalf of people with diabetes, say thank you. says Diabetes Australia Professor Greg Johnson. One of these people who are making a remarkable difference to the community is proud Wiradjuri woman Dr Tamara Power, member of the Congress of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island Nurses and Midwives working at the University of Technology Sydney. She is one of Australia’s leading First Nations nurse academics and has more than 15 years’ experience in nursing, education, and research, and more recently diabetes research and paediatric endocrinology. Dr Power has a simple message to people looking to improve outcomes for First Nations people with diabetes. I want to encourage First Nations young people to consider a career in nursing specialising in diabetes. This is a career that can really impact the lives of people in our community and help keep our community strong, she said. Diabetes Australia is committed, now and into the future, to supporting First Nations diabetes communities around the country. Through guidance from First Nations nurses, healthcare professionals and community members, we will continue to fight for better health outcomes for all First Nations people living with diabetes. 08.01.2022 Did you catch The Morning Show? Don't worry if you missed it, we have you covered. In the lead up to World Diabetes Day 2020, Diabetes Australia spokesperson ...and endocrinologist Associate Professor Roger Chen spoke to The Morning Show. Dr Chen discusses the differences between type 1 diabetes and type 2 diabetes, as well as the warning signs and symptoms that all Australians should pay attention to. Every five minutes in Australia, someone is diagnosed with diabetes. These numbers are even higher if you consider the number of people who go undiagnosed. This World Diabetes Day, we are asking all Australians to consider their risk and make their health a priority - it could save your life. Watch Associate Professor Chen's full interview on The Morning Show below.
08.01.2022 There are 1.7 million Australians living with all types of diabetes and every person is unique. That means everyone manages their diabetes in slightly different... ways. One part of living with diabetes everyone has to think about is what they eat. We believe there is no one-size-fits-all approach to food and diabetes and that’s why people should talk to a qualified health professional to develop an approach that suits them. For many people in Australia’s diabetes community that means adopting a low carb approach. We acknowledge that a low carb approach can be great for some people and we support people who choose to do this. That’s why we developed a position statement to help people make an informed decision about what is best for them. The Australian Dietary Guidelines are a good starting point for all Australians, but we always recommend that people with diabetes talk to their diabetes healthcare team and get **individualised advice** The Guidelines are now seven years old and there has been plenty of new research since then. We are pleased the NHMRC has announced a review of the Guidelines, taking into account the best available evidence from leading experts Diabetes Australia will be contributing to ensure we get the best possible dietary guidelines for people with diabetes. https://www.diabetesaustralia.com.au//Diabetes-Australia-P

04.01.2022 The festive season is a time for family, friends and gatherings, and there are some simple ways you can make your celebrations dementia-friendly. Simple is b...est - plan the day ahead, stick to routines as much as possible. Keep it calm - have a ‘quiet room’ where someone with dementia can retreat if things become a bit much. Share the caring - create opportunities for family members and friends to share the caring role. Everyone needs to feel valued - consider how someone with dementia used to contribute and find a way to help them do this. Hanging a bauble on a tree, setting the table or helping to prepare food can help a person with dementia feel included. You can also consider decorating our virtual Christmas Tree and encouraging family and friends to do so to, with the gifts donated in the name of your loved one. You can find out more at www.ourchristmaswish.com.au More tips and ideas can be found in our most recent enews: https://www.dementia.org.au//make-your-festive-season-deme
