25.01.2022 Lockdown sketches from my studio studies for some art work .

24.01.2022 Had fun using this embossing technique on my latest woodblock. The triangular pattern is created by using a reverse block and rubbed from the front of the image with the baren. There was only one shade of blue printed behind the mother but this karazuri like technique adds something extra.

23.01.2022 Another woodblock commenced in a series of beautiful Australian flowers and faces. Here the drawing is transferred to film and then to the block with plastic carbon. Second picture is the shina wood carving commenced. Lovely rainy Saturday afternoon activity at Artists@work Gallery 29 Sheridan St. Cairns.

19.01.2022 Finished Ichibei Iwano Sensei’s house in Echizen 11 colours 4 bokashi overlays, two tone key block. Printed on his own beautiful hand made paper. This is where I spent time with Ichibei sensei and his family in winter whilst they did ‘chiritori or picking out the brown bits from the paper pulp in a large trough with cold water running through it. The shed in the foreground is where that took place.

19.01.2022 A look at some of my woodblock works, some in black & white( sumi ) on rice paper and coloured ones on kozo. Missing Japan and the inspiration I get from being there! Still hacking away though, can't help myself. 4 on the go at the moment two very large ones and two A1, A4 size.

15.01.2022 The Kite Gallery opening tonight was exciting! A collection of local artists works spanning a variety of media and techniques. The standard was admirable and judging by the huge crowd it attracted this is a gallery well supported by Cairns locals. Pulled together by the genius of Amanda and Craig with help from Tim and many others, it is an attractive and welcoming space. Opening night food and bar by Elixir was a Mexican culinary hit! Music completed the lively atmosphere created by this new Gallery on the art scene in Cairns. Check out some of the works below.

11.01.2022 Woodblock art ‘Saturday drop in ‘ at Artists@work 29 Sheridan Street. $30 , 12:00-3:00pm . Materials and tools shop for all your supplies. Come try the ancient Japanese technique or bring your own work along to work on. Yvonne has studied in Japan and will provide advice on progressing your wood blocks.

10.01.2022 Tried some non structural builders ply for this print. Interesting results. Here’s my thoughts so far. I gave it a coat of dilute PCs in case it split. Surface was HARD second layer white and fibrous, a bit of a nuisance, then a cement like black glue I wasn’t going to risk my knives on. This means using a mask at times when printing. The hardness means tools can skip if not careful. ( Not really for beginners) It kept a fine line and points and lines didn’t chip out when ...cutting across the grain! Great! The white second layer made it easy to see where you had cut. Bonus. I used thicker printing paper here with a tooth to it hence the stippled effect on the Sky. The ocean however was less so! I will try smooth kozo next to see what the texture looks like there. Overall I will probably use this ply for the larger works I want to do as it is cost effective. See more

05.01.2022 Another in the series of Australian bushfire victims. Tossing pigments from Richard Steiner on Japanese kozo paper. Can’t see it here but the bokashi at the top is shiny gold and the green is textured like grass. Finished them tonight and bedded them down between cardboard to dry. Very satisfying!
