18.01.2022 Our new single origin coffee - Uganda Kasese Mubuku Natural Coffee in Uganda has a deep history. It is said to be the native home to one species of Robusta, and... families often include coffee with their offerings at the family shrine for their ancestors. Commercial coffee production began early in the 20th Century when the first plantations were established by European and Asian settlers around 1914. Since then coffee has grown to become Uganda’s second most valuable export, accounting for 11.7% of total exports by revenue as recently as 2018. Although introduced into Uganda over a century ago, Arabica coffee has to date only accounted for a small portion, around 20% according to latest estimates, of total coffee production. Despite this, there is increasing focus on specialty coffee as producers chase higher returns in an effort to improve their livelihood. This coffee was sourced from Kasese washing station which sits on a 20 acre parcel of land on the banks of the Mubuku River. Over 4,300 farmers contribute cherry to Kasese Station, spread out over a large territory covering a vast network of farms and communities and requiring the use of satellite collecting stations to ensure cherries are brought to Kasese daily. At Kasese, the cherries were dried on raised beds, visually inspected with damaged and defective beans removed. The cherries were dried to a moisture content of between 11% and 12%, bagged and rested prior to final transport to Kampala where they are sorted based on cup quality.

The opportunity was there from a young age to be involved. Paulo, however, chose a different path. Graduating with a degree in Electronic Engineering, Paulo pursued a career in Information Technology instead. Fate had other ideas, and when Paulo married into a coffee producing family, his evolution began. Today, Paulo is 100% dedicated to the management of Ouro Verde Farm. Utilising his Engineering skills, Paulo has transformed Ouro Verde into a controlled, technology driven operation while maintaining the traditions that have characterised it through several generations. Ouro Verde is located in an ideal, coffee growing region blessed with a micro-climate conducive for producing high quality specialty coffee. Together with Paulo’s innovations and meticulous post-harvest processing, 90% of Ouro Verde’s production qualifies as specialty coffee. An enviable statistic! Of the lots we sampled, this Lot #1 impressed us most. Milk chocolate, almond and cherry notes delivered syrupy and sweet like panella. This micro-lot is bound to be popular, especially for those who enjoy heavy bodied coffees.

04.01.2022 Kenya Mubiru our New Single Origin #stdreuxcoffee #comingup #october Kiambu County is situated on the northern outskirts of Nairobi, Kenya’s capitol. Kiambu h...as a long history of coffee production with farms dating back to colonial times. More recently, Nairobi’s urban sprawl has encroached, increasing land values and tempting farmers to cash in and sell their land. Additionally, younger generations have shown a preference for non-farm work, increasing pressure on coffee production. Many of the larger coffee plantations are now housing developments, but smaller farms, which tend to be located farther away from the encroaching urban sprawl, continue. At least for now. This lot was sourced from small holder farmers who selectively hand-picked red, ripe cherries before delivering to the wet mill. At the mill, underripe and overripe cherries are removed before pulping and then sun-dried on raised beds. The coffee was then delivered to the dry mill for sorting and grading. Complex and versatile, we enjoyed the currants, apricot and lemon flavours of this coffee. Classic Kenya! On the other hand, changing the brew ratio allowed us to emphasise chocolate and darker fruit flavours. Try it out for yourself! Soon available at cafe partners and online #watchthatspace
