20.01.2022 "What is imposter syndrome? Imposter syndrome is a psychological pattern in which a person doubts themselves. Usually, this refers to someone doubting their success and fearing being exposed as a fraud. What is a dynamic disability? A dynamic disability, as coined by Brianne Benness of No End in Sight, is a disability which fluctuates in severity from one moment onto the next." 19.01.2022 The idea of the NDIS was (and is) choice and control. This includes seeing providers you want and whi you build a rapore with. '...Advocacy body People with Disability Australia said it was very concerned about the introduction of wide scale independent assessments and called for greater government consultation with the disability community. We know that too many people with disability are finding the NDIS hard to access, and we are concerned that these proposed assessmen...ts will do nothing to reduce those barriers, spokesperson El Gibbs said. We want to see far more consultation with people with disability, and our organisations, about the implications of this move. www.sbs.com.au//concern-in-australia-s-disability-communit

06.01.2022 NOW HERE'S SOMETHING YOU MAY NOT KNOW It may surprise you to know that the first guide dog ever to come to Australia, arrived and lived in Perth! Dreana, a blac...k Labrador retriever, belonged to UWA economics lecturer Mr Arnold Cook. Since first taking her reins while living in England, visually impaired Mr Cook had been amazed at how Dreana obeyed his every command. He could not live without her. We walked the full length of the Strand together at one of its busiest periods and I bumped into only two persons he told The West on his return to Perth with Dreana in 1950. Mr Cook was determined that others could also enjoy the pleasure and independence of having a guide-dog. Only a year later, intelligent dogs up to 18 months old, pedigree or not, preferably bitches and measuring at least 20 inches, were welcomed to the very first Guide Dogs of the Blind Association in Perth. Mrs Elsie Mead of Maylands, was the first person to own a guide dog trained in Australia. Blind for a lifetime from a detonator explosion at the age of five, Mrs Mead became the owner of a new set of eyes that could see a dog’s eyes. Beau, a handsome and alert old black kelpie, was especially trained, by the same woman who had trained Dreana in England, to assist Mrs Mead on out-of-doors excursions. Equipped with a harness, leash and guiding handle, Beau could not only assist Mrs Mead safely across busy Guildford Road but he could also take her to particular shops on request. Including the butcher’s, the grocer’s and to her favorite fruiterer. Beau also knew of the post office, the railway station and the bus stop. When at home he served as a watch-dog. Elsie described Beau as a Godsend to The West Australian in 1952 but admitted he did have one fault though he was "no gentlemen: on public transport he would immediately sit down on a seat and was reluctant to rise". By 1957 there was a Guide Dog Association in every state of Australia. Western Australia having led the way.
