25.01.2022 Delays in reporting sexual assault are not uncommon. Women often feel so ashamed that they struggle to find the inner strength to report. This is exacerbated if women are intoxicated because society still blames women for sexual assault. It’s hard to believe that 50 years after the ‘so-called’ sexual revolution, Australian women are still being chastised for being too attractive or available. Australia supports equality under law, yet the responsibility for sexual assault still seems to firmly rest upon women, asking if they said ‘No’! Why don’t we ask men if she said ‘Yes’? Unless there is a ‘Yes’, it’s automatically, ‘No’! #YES2UNDRESS #thetroublewithtrauma #sexualassault #trauma #YesMovement https://kerryannhoward.com/sexual-assault-the-trouble-with/

21.01.2022 I gave this interview today about the need for #mentalfitness in our services and resources sectors. Really important for the #mining and #oilandgas industries to understand how mental health can be addressed. https://mitchellsfrontpage.com/better-mental-fitness-traini

20.01.2022 Historically, the Australian minerals sector has focussed their workplace health and safety efforts on physical safety risk. However, over the past few years there has been a growing focus to include the wellbeing and mental health of these workers. Despite efforts through the 2015 'Blueprint for Mental Health and Wellbeing', there has been little change in the mental health and wellbeing in the resources sector. ... The health of workers in this sector actively affects 9% of the Australian population. Improving the mental health and wellbeing of these workers needs to be made top priority. #mentalhealth #mining #thetroublewithtrauma #prevention #trauma #resources https://kerryannhoward.com/mental-health-in-resources-sect/

12.01.2022 Psychological injury claims are on the rise. To change this, we need to begin to intervene earlier, from the time an employee goes on stress leave. We should take the time to validate their experience and reiterate their value to the organisation and encourage them to access a variety of supports. Through self-determination they will improve outcomes for themselves and are more likely to re-engage in the work environment. Their perception is their reality, so given the opportunity for autonomy and validation, they respond more effectively and recover. #thetroublewithtrauma #recovery #selfdetermination #stressleave #workerscompensationclaims #trauma #COVID19 https://kerryannhoward.com/self-determination-the-trouble-/

10.01.2022 Organisations usually attempt to analyse the situation and search for who is in the right and who is in the wrong. In fact, it is actually this process that causes the biggest problem because it’s about how the employee perceives the situation, not whether they are right to feel the way they do. In situations such as these, it is crucial that HR and injury management areas validate the experiences and feelings of their employees rather than try and perceive how they would fee...l if they were in the same situation. We have always said you have to walk a mile in someone else’s shoes, however when it comes to employee’s going on stress leave, it may be best to keep your own shoes on. #thetroublewithtrauma #validation #traumaprevention #trauma #emotionalvalidation #workerscompensation #preventingptsd https://kerryannhoward.com/validation-the-trouble-with-tra/

04.01.2022 I often hear the term 'malingering' thrown around when I am working with organisations about reducing their risk for workers compensation claims that are based on psychological injuries. Although I can understand how the perception developed, the use of the term, and the impact of the belief, creates a significant barrier to getting people back to work. #thetroublewithtrauma #recovery #malingering #injuredatwork #workerscompensationclaims #trauma #COVID19 https://kerryannhoward.com/the-trouble-with-trauma-malinge/

01.01.2022 Emergency and frontline organisations promote physical fitness for their workers. These roles require that these individuals maintain their physical fitness, otherwise they may not be able to fulfill their role. Mental fitness for these workers is just as important as physical fitness. We know that these workers are regularly exposed to traumatic experiences, yet they have not been given the skill set to build their mental fitness to manage this exposure. It is essential ...that emergency service organisations provide training for their employees' to strengthen their psychological mindset, to reduce the impact of occupational trauma and ensure that they can retain their highly skilled workforce. #thetroublewithtrauma #prevention #mentalfitness #mentalhealth #trauma #mentalcapacitybuilding #fitness #preventingptsd #traumaprevention #emergencyservices #frontlineworkers https://kerryannhoward.com/mental-fitness-the-trouble-with/ See more
