21.01.2022 What do you think of when you see "be confident?" It's different for all of us - right? For me, it's about being comfortable in my own skin, regardless of what situation I'm in. I'll be honest, it's a work in progress! I'm currently rocking some COVID kilos, so it's something I'm struggling with at the moment - and I was pretty stressed about having some new photos done recently. ... People who know me, think that I've got the confidence thing down pat - I can absolutely pull out all the stops when I need to, but I had to really rely on an expert to get me through looking confident and relaxed for my photos - and that's why I go to a great photographer! Shaun is a whiz - he knew just what to do so I looked and felt confident, and ended up with great result. Putting a business spin on it - I'm sure you also bring in experts to help you in areas you're not so confident in - sales perhaps, marketing, websites etc. What it all boils down to is - you don't have to be confident in EVERYTHING yourself - you just have to find people who you have confidence IN. 17.01.2022 Do I really need to develop my Leadership skills? HELL YES! As a small business owner, levelling up your leadership skills will help you provide a vision for your business and if you have a team (even if only 1 or 2 people) motivate them to work towards your business goals.... No matter the style of leadership you use, the fundamental skills that make a good leader are the same. The best leaders: have the ability to inspire others and develop a vision set clear goals, staying focused, and communicate well give and receiving feedback know the strengths and weaknesses of themselves and teammates know when to ask for outside help are approachable, honest, and committed know how to successfully execute a strategy Most business owners have some of these skills - lets be honest, you wouldn't stay open for long if you didn't! The real question is - do you have ALL of these skills, or a way to develop them so you bring you and your business to their full potential? 13.01.2022 It's after 5pm here in Adelaide, so it's definitely ok to be pouring that glass of wine! One of the things I'm focussed on this year is to make sure I DO give myself some grace. When I left my corporate gig, I went straight into my own biz. In hindsight, it would have been much better to have a break, but I didn't, I just kept on rolling......... 11.01.2022 Leading - Yourself, People, The Business I'm on a mission to help small business owners understand how important it is to develop leadership skills. So, I've resorted to a super serious leadership framework, with super serious phrases in it ... Ok - now I've got that out the way, there IS a reason I've gone all serious and corporate on you! Even though it's used in formal leadership training, this is a really well known approach to understanding how leadership changes and develops. At each stage, you need different skills and behaviours to be an effective leader and this very business-like diagram makes it easy to see how they change. So, LEADING YOURSELF is about knowing yourself and working on developing skills to self-lead (like I shared yesterday) LEADING PEOPLE is about building the skills to get the best out of others - and to do this the focus has to shift away from yourself and onto others - you deliver results through them. Then, is the biggie - LEADING A BUSINESS OR ORGANISATION. It's all strategy, vision and influencing. But get this - if you're the owner of a small business - whether you have a team or not, you step right up to the leading a business stage! 03.01.2022 Wouldn't it be great to see into the future! Imagine what you could achieve (or avoid)!! Well I can't wave my magic wand and make that happen, but I can share what you CAN do to plan for your business. Having a vision might sound like something that only big business needs - but it's not ... Knowing where you're going, both personally and in your biz is sooooo important. I have a framework I use that helps you do exactly that - it takes you through 5 different parts of your life and links them back to your business goal. You build your own North Star This is what keeps you on track, helps you remember your "WHY" and is something you come back to time and time again. It helps with motivation and decision making. You can ask yourself at any time - "Does this align with my vision?" It's a great way to stop shiny object syndrome (trying every new thing) as well as driving consistency in your business. We all know that balance is important - but unless you have a plan, strategy and accountability, if you're like most business owners, you have a lot on your plate and the first thing to go is usually the time you allocated to looking after everything apart from your business.
