25.01.2022 A big congratulations to the 1,900 City of Unley residents who have Taken the Pledge to #reducewaste by using your green-organics bin and recycling bin as much as possible. Collectively you have diverted 422 tonnes from landfill this year! To find out more, see here: www.kesab.asn.au/kesab-blog/

25.01.2022 Gas cylinders/ bottles are potentially hazardous and should never be disposed of in a bin (they may explode when crushed by machinery). Most cylinders can be refilled or exchanged at the place of purchase, otherwise take to your nearest Hazardous Waste Depot. https://www.greenindustries.sa.gov.au/hazwaste

25.01.2022 While we want to reduce and reuse items like child seats for as long as we can, there comes a time when something has reached the end of it's life! Do you have a tricky item you would love to learn how to recycle? Let us know in the comment section #nationalrecyclingweek

25.01.2022 Most cotton buds have a plastic stick and are a landfill item, and even those which are made from 100% natural fibres are not compostable in the green bin as cotton does not adequately break down. Reusable cotton buds are potentially a great alternative to look out for!

25.01.2022 Who has seen Vin and his family on TV? Which Bin is a state government campaign to help us all ensure we are recycling right. Still have questions? You can call the Which Bin hotline (1300 137 118), which comes straight to us at KESAB!

24.01.2022 The SA Water and KESAB teams were very grateful to be welcomed back to visit communities on the APY Lands and Far West Coast to spread the word on how to make the most of one of our most precious of resources, water. Thank you, Oak Valley Anangu School, we really enjoyed working with your passionate and enthusiastic students

24.01.2022 Unfortunately (unless it is a very old drop) corks contain plastic based glues and are not compostable in the green bin. Consider donating to a local art group or school for reuse!

23.01.2022 Its a busy time for us at KESAB, with a lot of interstate and regional education programs. Grace and Wendy have just arrived in Pukatja (APY Lands) for school education, plus a community BBQ tonight. Its looking pretty warm! #SAWater #APY #RASAC

23.01.2022 Currently in Australia, there are no certified compostable nappies on the market (despite many that have packaging claiming they are biodegradable or compostable.) Over 2 billion nappies go to landfill yearly in Australia. If you are looking for an alternative, cloth nappies are the way to go. Want to know why they aren't compostable - check out this article by our friends at AORA https://www.aora.org.au/news/are-nappies-compostable

23.01.2022 Check out this cute video on how to make an origami bin bag from old newspaper. Thanks Bella! Who has gone one step further and doesnt use a bin liner at all? #PlasticFreeJuly

23.01.2022 The Adelaide Sustainability Centre is currently trialling a 'Library of Things' - a loan library stocking items ranging from party kits to camping gear, and many gems in between! Sharing things we only need now and again no only cuts down on clutter but also saves money, reduces our environmental footprint, and helps to bring our community together. We can't wait to see how the trial goes, and hopefully we will see more of these great initiatives popping up in other places as well!

22.01.2022 Small paper items, such as shredded paper, sticky notes and scrap paper offcuts are all best placed into the green bin or your home compost bin, rather than the recycling bin. Why? Small bits of paper tend to blow away/ fall through the gaps in the conveyor belts at the MRF (Material Recovery Facility), making them very difficult to get through the recycling process. #recyclingtips #wastetips #compost #reducewaste

22.01.2022 KESABs Steve Walker has been announced as a finalist in the Unsung Hero of South Australian Science Awards. Conducted by National Science Week South Australia, the Unsung Hero Awards of South Australian Science aim to recognise those whose contributions to science or science communication have been significant over a long period of time. Well done Steve! https://inspiringsa.org.au/unsung-hero-award-finalists-2020/

22.01.2022 Light globes are not accepted in the yellow-lidded recycling bin. BUT we can recycle them by dropping end-of-life globes off at a local Mitre 10 store here in SA. Do you know any other stores which recycle light globes? #wastetips #recycling #recyclingtips #whywasteit #southaustralia

21.01.2022 Here are KESAB we don't just run education programs - Grace and Ali are currently interstate conducting a series of audits. It's certainly been a busy month!

21.01.2022 Today is National Buy It Back Day, celebrating all things second-hand, upcycled, or made from recycled materials. Here in Adelaide, we have so many amazing local businesses dedicated to #closingtheloop by using recycled material in their products - like Hey Reflect'o, who make reflective vests out of recycled plastic bottles, right here in Adelaide. They even use compostable bags for packaging! Do you have a favourite brand or business who is #buyingitback? Let us know in th...e comments below! #nationalrecyclingweek #buyitback #closetheloop

21.01.2022 Confused about what to do with tissues these days? In metro Adelaide, used tissues are still safe to be put into your green bin, because at our amazing local composting facilities the will be completely broken down, bacteria and all! Please do NOT flush them down the toilet, as they take much longer to break down than toilet paper and can cause blockages.

21.01.2022 While we were once told not to put aerosol cans into the yellow recycling bin, this has changed in recent years. Make sure the cans are empty and recycle the lid separately.

20.01.2022 Happy National Recycling Week! This year we are excited to see the focus is all about reducing and reusing resources, as well as recycling. Over the next few days we will be sharing some of our favourite tips to reduce, reuse and support a local circular economy, but we would love to hear from you as well. What has been your greatest success in reducing your waste footprint? What is your greatest challenge? Planet Ark #nationalrecyclingweek #beyondthebin

20.01.2022 Even when we do what we can to reduce fast fashion and limit our waste, our clothing reaches a point where it's too old/ worn for repair. What are your options? H&M, Zara and Country Road all accept old clothing (of any brand). Your local mechanics or pet shelters may be able to use the rags. Upparel (formerly Mangrags) is an online service for fabric recycling, but there are fees associated. ... SRCGroup have drop off locations at shopping centres around Adelaide, and take shoes and handbags. Do you know of any other options? Let us know in the comments below

20.01.2022 Have you tried toothpaste tablets? These can be great plastic-free alternatives to generic toothpaste. While youre at it, try switching to a bamboo toothbrush too! Note that it is best to consult with your dentist to check these will work for your teeth if you have dental history. #PlasticFreeJulytips

19.01.2022 We have some world-class composting facilities here in SA, which means if you live in a metropolitan council, you can put bones (cooked or raw) into the green bin! For more info on what can or can't go in the green bin, check out this great blog by Jeffries - https://jeffries.com.au/what-can-go-in-my-green-bin-2020/ If you are in a regional area, check with your local council first

19.01.2022 Our recent post about cat litter had a HUGE response. Clearly a lot of us have cats! It also proved cat litter is a bit more complicated than we first thought. In response, our friends at Jeffries are putting together a list of brands which are (or are not) compostable in our green bins at home. Do you have one you want checked? Comment below!

19.01.2022 It's fantastic to see national companies like Australia Post stepping up and addressing waste. While here in SA we are lucky enough to have the Unplug and Drop cages at most Bunnings stores (thanks to local company Electronic Recycling Australia), this is great news for regional areas and interstate.

18.01.2022 It is best to avoid styrofoam meat trays or takeaway food containers, as these are landfill items. Packing styrofoam can be recycled, but ONLY if taken directly to recycling facilities such as NAWMA (www.nawma.sa.gov.au).

18.01.2022 Getting away this weekend? With more of us holidaying at home, our public spaces, parks and holiday destinations are feeling the strain. If public bins are full, please take your waste home with you and help us keep our beautiful state clean and litter-free.

17.01.2022 Checkout this phenomenal recycling set-up at Airdale Primary School. Thanks to the ongoing commitment and support from Port Pirie Regional Council, KESAB environmental solutions have been working with Airdale Primary School to educate the school community and 'Wipe Out Waste'. Students, staff and management are all committed to sending a strong sustainability message, and hope this inspires other sites to Wipe Out Waste for good too! For more information contact KESAB or check out the Wipe Out Waste website (http://www.wow.sa.gov.au/).

17.01.2022 Beeswax wraps are a great alternative to single-use plastic wraps. If youre keen to learn how to make your own, keep an eye out for our free workshops (both online or in-person)! #PlasticFreeJulytips

16.01.2022 Need to pick up supplies? Rather than heading to a supermarket tonight, why not call a local restaurant, cafe or bar and see if you can help them out by buying any perishables? And remember, supermarkets are staying open so no need to stock up too much! Stay safe, help your neighbours, and see you in 7 days ... #supportlocal #staysafe #reducewaste #SouthAustralia

16.01.2022 The last virtual tour of our waste and recycling facilities for this year is next Wednesday! Book in now to make sure you don't miss out. For more details and to register see: http://www.kesab.asn.au/events/

14.01.2022 While the fruit and vegetables themselves are compostable, the stickers are not! Please remember to remove stickers before putting any food scraps in the green bin. #composttips #wastetips #compost #gofogo

13.01.2022 Our next virtual Wipe out Waste holiday field trip & professional development session is now open for registrations! This event will be a series of webinar style sessions - including visiting some of the sites we would normally visit by bus, plus a couple of live special guest speakers. We will also share and discuss online resources and activities that can be hired from KESAB to use in your classrooms.... There will be regular breaks during the sessions, including a scheduled 30 minute lunch break. Register here -www.eventbrite.com.au/e/121330509821

13.01.2022 Congratulations to Elizabeth Grove Primary School, who have achieved an 87% reduction in materials being sent to landfill in two years. By implementing a 6 way separation system (thanks to local company BIN SHIFT) they are now sending just 0.07L/person/day to landfill a great result. Shannon Brookes is holding a days worth of landfill material for more than 300 people!

13.01.2022 Like cotton fabric wool is a natural fibre and a biodegradable material. However unlike other pet fur, wool is extremely dense and takes a very long time to break down, even at our fantastic commercial composting facilities. Therefore, please do not put wool-based fabrics or fibres into the green bin. You can try composting at home instead - just be aware it might take a while! #composttips #SouthAustralia #wastetips #wastefree #wastemanagment

13.01.2022 We're super excited to watch the next chapter of War on Waste, starting tomorrow night! Will you be tuning in?

12.01.2022 Although it is a natural fibre, according to our friends at Jeffries, cotton does not break down fully in a commercial composting system and is unfortunately a NO in the green bin. This is something we were unaware of until fairly recently, so apologies to everyone we have told otherwise!

12.01.2022 Its fantastic to see national companies like Australia Post stepping up and addressing waste. While here in SA we are lucky enough to have the Unplug and Drop cages at most Bunnings stores (thanks to local company Electronic Recycling Australia), this is great news for regional areas and interstate.

12.01.2022 Congratulations to everyone who made it through the Plastic Free July Challenge 2020! Cutting plastic out of our lives completely is definitely hard, but every bit counts and we are all in this together What plastic items will you continue to avoid?

12.01.2022 KESAB education officers Ali and Jo have had a great few weeks up in Palmerston, NT, running school sessions, community workshops and promoting the Take the Pledge program. Engaging with over 700 students, families and Palmerston residents the trip was a great success. We are looking forward to heading back again next year - hopefully when it's a bit less humid! www.palmerston.nt.gov.au/operations/environment/take-pledge #TakethePledge #RecycleRight #CityofPalmerston

11.01.2022 Last chance to book for our upcoming Business tour! Bookings via www.trybooking.com/events/landing?eid=736617

11.01.2022 Anytime two different types of materials are mixed together (e.g. laminated paper or plastic and foil pill packets), they unfortunately cannot be recycled and are a landfill item.

11.01.2022 Grace and Wendy have recently returned from another fantastic trip to the APY Lands in partnership with SA Water, educating the next generation of Anangu of the importance water quality and conservation.

11.01.2022 While silicone is an excellent reusable substitute for single-use baking equipment, is it is not compostable or recyclable and must go to landfill at the end of it's life. Thankfully most silicone based items last a very long time, and unwanted items can be easily donated for someone else to use again.

10.01.2022 The waxed paper or cardboard food and drink packaging from major fast food outlets are unfortunately not compostable or easily recyclable and should go into the landfill bin. The nonwaxed paper carry bag (e.g. pictured) is fine for composting however!

10.01.2022 Whos been embracing the cold weather by getting the oven going? Unfortunately baking paper is not compostable or recyclable. Instead, try a well-oiled tin/tray or reusable silicone baking sheets.

10.01.2022 KESABs resident frog expert Steve Walker tells us hes started getting emails requesting information about frogs people are finding in their gardens, with some concerned they might be toads. Now that we are in spring we can expect a lot of encounters with our local Eastern Banjo Frogs. These large frogs spend much of the year underground but emerge at this time of year as they go looking for food and a mate. They often burrow away from creeks, wetlands, and other waterbodies..., so may been seen hopping to these areas, especially on a warm night following rain. If you encounter one of these toad-like frogs dont worry, they are a local native species and beneficial residents. You might recognise them from their characteristic mating call; a loud, explosive bonk! If you do have to pick one up to move it off your driveway or away from your pets, make sure you wash your hands with soapy water afterwards because they can produce a milky secretion from the glands on their legs which is distasteful and can be really irritating if you get it in your eyes. Find out more about this species at https://frogwatchsa.com.au/species/view/19

08.01.2022 Who's been embracing the cold weather by getting the oven going? Unfortunately baking paper is not compostable or recyclable. Instead, try a well-oiled tin/tray or reusable silicone baking sheets.

08.01.2022 240 frogs! Check out this cool BTN segment with Steve Walker - KESABs frog expert. If you want to get involved in frog monitoring and help collect valuable information about the frogs in South Australia, you can take part in FrogWatch SA using the FrogSpotter app, available free of charge from Google Play and the iPhone App Store. https://frogwatchsa.com.au https://frogwatchsa.com.au/learning-resources/frogspotter

08.01.2022 Getting take-out tonight? Avoid the excess plastic by saying NO to extra plastic like plastic bags, cutlery, straws, or pizza 'tables'. #PlasticFreeJulytips

08.01.2022 Although rubber is a natural material, rubber bands often contain chemical dyes or additives and are naturally resistant to the composting process. Unfortunately this makes them a landfill item unless they can be reused. What are your tips for reusing rubber bands?

08.01.2022 Like baking paper, cupcake cases are covered in a layer of wax which stops them from burning in the oven. Unfortunately it means they also cant go into your green bin, as they won't breakdown properly during the composting process. Thanks Jeffries for sharing this tip!

07.01.2022 Tomorrow is File Fling Friday! If you're due for an office cleanout, now is the time to make sure all that paper piling up in your office makes it to the recycling bin, so it can be turned back into quality paper to be used again. Don't forget to remove paper from plastic folders, sleeves or binders as these cannot be recycled. https://recyclingnearyou.com.au/nationalre/fridayfilefling/

06.01.2022 There has never been a better time to get creative and use up those frozen leftovers or the weird and wonderful items at the back of your pantry. 06.01.2022 On this Australia Day we pause to reflect on our nation’s past, which began more than 65,000 years ago. We acknowledge the stories, traditions and living cultures of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and we pay our respects to Elders past, present and emerging. We reflect our joint and separate histories and we celebrate the positive contributions that all Australians from all corners of the globe have brought to our nation. We are all lucky to call this beautiful country home and we celebrate the best qualities of Australia, generosity, fairness and decency.

04.01.2022 While we love the increasing number of recycling options now available for clothing, the most effective way to reduce waste is to reduce consumption. So instead of buying new, #choosetorefuse ! Visit local op-shops, join or host a local Swap Party, or get creative with the clothes you already have! Never been to a Clothes Swap before? Check out this one coming up at the Adelaide Sustainability Centre www.eventbrite.com.au/e/clothes-swap-party-tickets-12600907... #nationalrecyclingweek #choosetoreuse #preloved #nothingnew

04.01.2022 Have you heard of the Fight Food Waste CRC? The biggest food waste research group in the world, based right here in Adelaide! Take a look at the Fight Food Waste page for great recipes and tips. #FightFoodWaste

04.01.2022 Trying to be sustainable with a furry friend? If your cat litter is 100% recycled paper or natural clay (e.g. Breeders Choice or Chandlers) you can put it into the green bin, either loose or in a certified compostable bag. However, if the litter is crystal or silica based it is not compostable and will need to be placed in the landfill bin.

04.01.2022 In partnership with KESAB, Frewville and Pasadena Foodlands have switched to fully compostable produce bags! This initiative will save more than 3 million plastic bags annually, and the compostable alternative is made by BioBag World Australia, right here in Adelaide. The launch is perfectly timed with the recent announcement that SA is the first state in Australia to ban single-use plastics, and demonstrates Adelaide's finest supermarkets continued dedication to reducing their environmental impact. Read the full article here - www.kesab.asn.au//pasadena-and-frewville-foodlands-elimin/

03.01.2022 What an amazing opportunity! Well done to the Green Adelaide team and all those involved in this fantastic program, and to the students who are committed to caring for our environment

03.01.2022 While it is great to get some more rain before summer, we hope you are all staying warm and dry! For those of us lucky enough to have a wood fireplace at home, you can put the old ash into your green bin. Just make sure it is completely cold first.

02.01.2022 Old cassette tapes, DVDs, CDs, video tapes are all not recyclable, and unless they can be given away or donated, are a landfill item. The plastic casing may be recyclable via the yellow bin.

02.01.2022 It's a busy time for us at KESAB, with a lot of interstate and regional education programs. Grace and Wendy have just arrived in Pukatja (APY Lands) for school education, plus a community BBQ tonight. It's looking pretty warm! #SAWater #APY #RASAC

We're here to help, so shoot us a message or comment below and we'll get back to you ASAP. #staystrongSA #wereinittogether #reducewaste

02.01.2022 Starting to pull together those Christmas decorations? Old Christmas lights can be taken to an electronic Unplug 'n Drop site for recycling. Better yet, see if you can repair them so they last another year! https://www.electronicrecyclingaustralia.com.au/unplug-n//
