25.01.2022 2020 RONALD YOUNG & CO BUILDERS PIPE OPENER RACE 1 REVIEW Friday night’s Ronald Young & Co. Builders Pipe Opener featured impressive sailing talent for Division... 1 and 2, with 36 boats starting the race in light variable conditions from Castray Esplanade. The earlier Cruising Division had much better conditions for the 4.05pm start, with 12 boats hitting the line in good pace and wind in their sails, overall a pretty uneventful start. Gretel sailed by Steven Shield took out both line honours and PHS from the closely contested cruising group. The notable yacht in this race that had an outstanding performance overnight was the Division 1 Melges 32, Crusader, helmed by successful yachtsman Brett Cooper. Division 2 saw Stewart Geeves in the Young 88 Footloose, take out the IRC, AMS and PHS for the win. The warning signal for Race 2 today will start at 1.25pm hosted by the Kettering Yacht Club, with conditions looking perfect for fair weather sailing down the D’Entrecasteaux Channel. 24.01.2022 MIDNIGHT RAMBLER STEALS THE SHOW IN RACE 2 OF THE 2020 RONALD YOUNG & CO BUILDERS PIPE OPENER The sun came down to shine on the weekend of the Pipe Opener in i...t’s 52nd year. Conditions were beautiful and light in the Derwent River on Saturday morning, not at all similar to Friday night’s race with fluctuating winds and large swells. Co-hosted by the Derwent Sailing Squadron and Kettering Yacht Club today’s Duggan’s Concrete Cove Cup race was, for the first time, held at the Kettering Yacht Club and with the help of sponsor Ronald Young & Co. Builders, we saw quite possibly the largest turn out in the history of the three day race. Friday night saw Brett Cooper’s Crusader take out line honours in both IRC and AMS in Division 1. The Melges 32 has been one to watch over the last few years and this year was no exception with the crew having 5 members under 18 years old. Indy Cooper at just 14 years old is no stranger to the racing world having been sailing from a young age, as has her sister Jorja Cooper, 16 who has, among other titles, competed in the 2019 SB20 Worlds in France and competed and placed first in the recent Fahan School Regatta. Other underage crew members include Charlie Goodfellow (17), Jack Allison (17) and Howard Tapping (17). The other notable yacht that took out the IRC, AMS and PHS for Division 2 was Stewart Geeves Young 88 Footloose. For the first time in Pipe Opener history DSS has created a cruising division which included the ex-America’s Cup boat Gretel II, helmed by Steven Shield, which took out both line honours and PHS from the group. DSS Vice Commodore Nick Connor was thrilled with the way Kettering Yacht Club’s first year hosting the three day race was going, saying that the new format being inclusive of cruising and family-friendly competitors has been a great success and will continue in the coming years. From a Derwent Sailing Squadron perspective, it’s a fantastic opportunity for all of our sailors to get down here to Kettering and support all the local businesses who put on a great show for us, we thank them. Saturday’s race got off to a rocky start with Division 4 being let off 5 minutes too early and causing the later Divisions to be postponed, however once the yachts got started we saw a fantastic turn out, with 37 boats overall competing in 15-25 knot North-easterly winds at it’s peak. Two time World Champion Paul Burnell and major sponsor was enthusiastic about the Saturday race, commenting that, similar to Friday nights competition, it looked like it was going to be ‘tense, fierce but very fair.’ His Beneteau 45, Stella, raced a smooth course Friday night with Saturday faring even better for the crew. Crusader (Div. 1 IRC 4th and AMS 6th on Saturday) wasn’t the only yacht to have crew members under the age of 18, with the majority of Jazz Player’s crew being between 18 - 23 years old and racing very well on Saturday afternoon placing 4th in Division 1 AMS and 6th in IRC. Midnight Rambler, helmed by Ed Psaltis, features young locals Anne Stewart (18) and Daniel Matzolic (17) who joined the crew early 2019 and are training for their first Sydney to Hobart. The boat had a spectacular race Friday night but took out the competition on Saturday afternoon with a clean sweep. Other mentionable boats were Richard Grant’s Cromarty Magellan that placed 2nd in Division 1 AMS and 3rd in PHS. Ian Johnston’s Zephyr was also a close competitor coming in at 5th in Division 1 AMS and 2nd in IRC. Sunday’s weather looks to be on track for another clear day to end the weekends races. 22.01.2022 WELCOME 2020 L2H ENTRANT THE DOG HOUSE The Dog House, an Austral 30 designed boat, did its first L2H race in 2019. Heralding from the lovely Channel area and ...owned by Ambrose Coad, the boat regularly sails at Kettering Yacht Club. During the recent Combined Clubs Winter Series the boat secured a 2nd overall PHS win and raced strongly in the Ronald Young & Co Builders Pipe Opener Series. This will be an extra special year for Benjamin Coad as he joins the The Dog House crew as the youngest crew and youngest competitor in this years race. Benjamin started sailing when he was 6 years old and has sailed on the boat regularly. Benjamin has been keenly sailing as much as he can, including the recent Pipe Opener night race, Kettering Yacht Club yacht long races, twilights and this years Australian Championship. At only 13 years that’s a lot of racing under his belt. Benjamin will also be sailing with his dad Peter Coad who will keep a keen eye on his son and his performance as a trimmer and in the pit. For Benjamin’s final preparation he will be assisting in the delivery of the boat Beauty Point. The Dog House is such a great name, particularly when you think about the meaning where guys (and gals!) go when they are in trouble. Lets hope this is not the case for this years crew! 21.01.2022 M009-21 Kettering - Restricted Navigation Mariners are advised that Oyster Cove Marina will install 3-4 temporary moorings approximately 20 meters East of their... attenuator in Kettering. These moorings are to be used to tie boats back to the marina for the Channel Challenge Sailing Regatta to increase berthing space for participants. From 14 to 18 January, the clearway East of the marina will not be navigable. Mariners should avoid entering the area if possible.

21.01.2022 And they are off and racing in Group 4 (Cruising). White line fever is the call of the day with Stella (Paul Burnell) and Believe (Richard Fisher) match racing ...on the start line. Fantastic conditions on the River Derwent for this 4pm start. Next start is at 7.30pm for the Division 1 & 2 boats.

21.01.2022 WELCOME 2020 L2H ENTRANT - RAD RAD, a Radford 35 skippered by Brent Mckay, Vice Commodore of the Kettering Yacht Club (KYC), was dismasted in 2018 race but this... has not dampened the enthusiasm of Brent and his crew to continue to support the L2H race. This will be RAD's 5th year racing in the L2H and Brent and his crew never fail to make the best of the sailing conditions down the East Coast of Tasmania with some fast and furious rides. RAD is another of this year's race entries that has a strong family focus, with his son's racing with him. We look forward to seeing Brent's media smile and enthusiastic laugh as he crosses the line in Hobart. 19.01.2022 WELCOME 2020 L2H ENTRANT TALOFA The boat Talofa has become one of our regulars in the L2H and will this year be adding another run to her board in her 5th rac...e. The Northshore 38 owned by Rob and Judi Cawthorn and regularly sailing out of the Kettering Yacht Club showed her form at the recent Pipe Opener, placing 2nd on IRC and 3rd on AMS in the Duggan’s Cove Cup. In 2018 the Talofa crew had to retire from the L2H race after sail damage but this years I’m sure they are looking forward to adding to their success of last years L2H, where they placed 2nd overall on AMS.
