Are joint sounds normal? What do they mean? Will they go away? There are many reasons for noisy hips. Sometimes it can be caused by weak turnout muscles and overactive gluteals that are trying to turn out the legs (butt gripping) but one of the more common reasons is a lack of dynamic core contro...l. Lets take our dancers for example, who often report clicking in their hip during Dvelopps or kicks to the side. This pop or click sound is usually the noise that is made when the hip flexor tendon flicks over a bony bump on the pelvis or end of the leg bone. Why is it common in dancers? Firstly, dancers use a far greater range of motion than the average person. Secondly, dancers often have flexibility that exceeds their stability throughout this range of motion. If their core muscles do not activate effectively, then the hip flexor muscle kicks in to help stabilise the spine and pelvis. This alters the coordination of the core and hip muscles and causes the contracted hip flexor to click over the bone. So basically, the pop sound is perhaps your bodys way of telling you that you need greater core activation to support the mobility of the hip and leg.
