21.01.2022 The rain stopped and I got to go for a walk.

20.01.2022 The view from the Jetty to Jetty viewing platform over Kennedy Hill yesterday morning, after a night of strong ESE winds. Seems to me there's an awful lot of dust being blown in from the desert and plains. Seems to me we need to think very carefully about how much more land-clearing we do in the name of the economy.

20.01.2022 When we train volunteers for the Cable Beach Turtle Monitoring Program we always say "Don't expect to see any turtles." But sometimes you get lucky!

17.01.2022 ".... and then a step to the right....."

17.01.2022 While it was sad to see a dead hawksbill turtle on Cable Beach today, my morning was brightened by witnessing this delightful behaviour (thanks to the Nyangumarta and Ngarla Rangers and Chloe from DBCA at 80 Mile Beach for teaching me about this.) This is a red-capped plover (I'm ready to be corrected on this). It has run down the beach in front of me to draw my attention away from the eggg/s it is protecting. As I got closer to the egg location the plover began acting as i...f injured, to make me think it was the easiest bit of prey on the beach. Once it was satisfied I was no longer a threat it scuttled back to the "nest" and resumed its parental hatching responsibilities. Isn't nature wonderful!

16.01.2022 Not Business As Usual is a group of Australian & global businesses pledging to support worker participation in the climate strike on September 20th. Here at Kevin Smith Broome Photography there's only me, and I'll be fully supporting my participation! I have been saying for years that the time for "business as usual" is long gone. The students organising Friday's actions recognise that, even if our so-called leaders don't. They are calling for governments to fund a just transition and job creation for all fossil-fuel workers and communities. Get behind them, give them your support as they call for the actions needed to ensure their future world is as livable as ours has been.

04.01.2022 Blue skies and boab trees

04.01.2022 They're here! This morning I did my first reconnaissance of Cable Beach to see what might have changed since the end of last season. There's definitely a steeper incline right at the edge of the dunes that will make life interesting for nesting turtles. I bumped into my good friend Marilyn Tabatznik, whose walking companion Marie told us she had seen a nest yesterday.... What? No! Where? Here you go - Sector 0, between Gantheaume and the start of Sector 1. I'd be about 70% confident that this is a nest, very early, but it shows the wisdom of starting the overnight vehicle access closure from October 1. And, yes, this is south of the rocks and, yes, you can see two sets of tyre tracks in this photo (there was a third a bit further down the beach).
