It’s called ADDITIONAL FINANCING NECESSARY to support growth. Some owners think it is good management to starve a business. That is called poverty! Just like we need to eat everyday to survive, a business that does not get fed will weaken and eventually die. Reinvesting profits at the rate needed to acquire new assets to fuel growth is a must. Get Over Fear of Failure: Learn to fail fast, and have your emotional baggage dealt with so you can fail frequently. Being emotionally fragile and not resilient is the real failure. Stop Being Stubborn: You had an idea, you loved it, the market did not love it, and you won’t let it go and move on because you are emotionally attached to ideas that no one is looking for. When markets say no, let go! Busyness Versus Business: Being busy with activities that do not lead to sales is an unproductive waste of time. Admin: Pay your bills on time, keep good records, don’t be a bank to customers, and be organised. Fear: Freedom and success is on the other side of your own brain. Learn how to overcome fear by reading, therapy, and having a coach or accountability partner who checks in weekly to make sure you are facing fear. Be Ethical: Don’t give in to stealing, portraying your brand as being something you are not, or pulling bait and switch on customers. Your reputation will be ruined and you will never be trusted when you lie, cheat, and steal. What distracts you from focusing on achieving your goals? Right now, and I mean becore you close this and do something else, choose to get serious about dealing with the distractions on this list. Here is a true story. Back in the 90s fresh out of my undergrad degree, I worked at ADESA, started a church, and stayed up all night too often while having four kids. What was I doing? I was coding, building websites, running a non profit side gig and building desktops (box, motherboard, modem, video and... audio card, memory, voila! People paid me to be myself! Those little side jobs taught me: Being an employee was not the freedom or potential realisation path I wanted at every life stage. I liked being paid for creating and doing what I love and am best at. Yeah, I had a job, but being paid to write, speak, and build things people wanted was when I had peak experiences of being in the flow in ways people rewarded me for financially. I wanted to own my own assets (balance sheet) and have those who want job security work for me. In 1996, I chose five self-employed freedom years on my own, then jumped back into managing other people’s businesses again 2000-2005. Then, we did another startup, an early ecommerce store called eBakers Online while I did my MBA. Then, I had the decade opportunity to CFO then CEO Monks’, but in 2012 started my M&A/Consulting business which is Kevin Baker Inc. in and Kevin Baker Consulting in . Today, I am not coding anymore, but am managing for other owners for now, am writing two books, have a podcast, have been a public speaker and community leader for 28 years, and am at a point in life where my creative curiosity and flow is focused on being a multiplier, building high performance regional economic development ecosystems in Australia.
