18.01.2022 It's getting closer! Nearly time to go back to school & once again time for your child's vision assessment. Good vision is essential for a child’s learning and development. Their eyes are constantly in use in the classroom and at play, and if there is a problem it can potentially have long-lasting effects on a child’s social and educational development. What might the problem be?? What conditions can vision screening detect? *Myopia (short-sighted): If your child has myopi...a, far-away objects seem blurry. They might need to squint or partially close their eyes to see objects in the distance clearly. *Hyperopia (long-sighted): If your child has hyperopia both their distance and near vision are blurred though they have more difficulty focusing on objects that are up close. *Astigmatism: Astigmatism is an eye problem where the front surface of the eye isn’t curved properly, or the lens of the eye is an irregular shape causing blurred vision. *Strabismus (squint/turned eye): Children with strabismus have eyes that seem to look in different directions. Strabismus can lead to problems with vision in the turned eye and a condition called ‘amblyopia’ (see below). *Amblyopia (lazy eye): Amblyopia is decreased vision in one or both eyes due to abnormal development early in life. This is the most common cause of visual impairment in Australian children, affecting about two in every 100 children. In severe cases, amblyopia can even cause blindness if not treated early. So do your child a favour & have their eyes checked before school returns! Kevin has extensive training in Behavioral Optometry, with an emphasis on children's vision. 12.01.2022 Pssst! It's getting close to back to school time! Now is the time to have your children's vision assessed to give them a head start with their learning. A child’s performance in the classroom may be affected by problems with eye movements, eye teaming, eye-hand coordination, and visual processing. Vision is more than eyesight - it is the ability to visualize, understand and apply information coming through the eyes. There is a difference between sight and vision. Sight is wh...at results from the eyes’ responses to light shining into them and is measured by determining how well we see different sized letters on a chart in the distance. Vision results from the child actively interpreting and understanding the information made available through the eyes. Children with normal (20/20) eyesight may not have these abilities. Therefore, learning problems are often related to vision problems. Before your child goes back to school make an appointment to see Kevin to have their eyes assessed. It's a great way to give your child a head start on their learning journey. (Courtesy ACBO, 2021).
