24.01.2022 ON THIS DAY 1 year ago at Box Hill City Oval, Kew FC picked up two premiership cups on the one day, with the Under 19s and Men’s Reserves both picking up impressive flags 2019 had the club buzzing with excitement from the outset: The Under 19s we’re making a long awaited return to Victoria Park after some 13 or more years out of action! As well as this, triple premiership coach, Ian Aitken has returned to the club after 2 years off, and had signed up to not only ...once again coach the Men’s Seniors, but would also the new Unders side as well The talent riddled Under 19s got their season off to such a flyer that they were promoted up a division just a month into the season, where they generally continued in their winning ways. The Reserves side of 2019 was simply a cut above the rest all season long, dropping just the one game in the final round of the season and winning their major semi to enjoy a week’s rest coming into the big dance against Peninsula Old Boys. The Unders had a tougher run in with a nail biting 1-point preliminary final win over Old Scotch but came in full of confidence nonetheless to face off against St Bernard’s in the early game. Young gun and proven senior quality star, Matt Odicho put on a clinic when it counted, booting 4 crucial goals and inspiring his teammates despite getting around on only one good leg! His heroics would see him awarded best afield and take home 2 medals for the day! Josh Wise, Misha Allinson and Bailey Gilbert were all absolutely scintillating the entire game, performances very worthy of the first, second and third positions they finished in respectively in the club best & fairest Whilst the Snowdogs took the early ascendency at the first break, a 7 goal to 2 second quarter set the victory up with a very low scoring second half to follow that featured only a goal from either side. Co-Captains, Josh Maccarone and Alister Bright held aloft the silverware in what was an emphatically triumphant return of Under-age footy to the Bear Cave with some special young men announcing themselves as future stars of the Senior ranks The Reserves played out another tense nail biter just like they did in the semi final against their very worthy opponents, the Pirates. The lead nervously changed at every break with the Old Grammarians holding a 2-point lead at the final change of ends. But the Bears turned it on when it mattered, finishing the game far stronger than Peninsula with a big 5 goal to 1 final term George Smart performed as consistently as he did all year, nailing 3 majors from full forward while Taylor Mckenzie was a ball magnet through the midfield, racking up 30+ disposals and earning a well-deserved Best on Ground medal in his first year at the club Skipper, Tim Cook and Coach, Nathan Monaco lifted the cup that felt destined to be in their hands all year, after an all-but perfect season by one of the most dominant Reserve sides in recent memory

22.01.2022 ON THIS DAY 6 years ago at Casey Fields, our Men’s Senior side claimed back to back premierships for first time since The Great Depression, when Kew won the 1931 and 1932 flags It was 2014 and we were the new boys in Division 2. Early on we identified some strong sides in Old Eltham and Old Paradians but it was clear early on and even prophetically declared by club president, Joe Chessari in round 5 that this season would be a two horse race between Kew FC and St...Continue reading

At home, the Women’s Reserves fell short against a strong Old Trinity outfit, sadly sustaining several injuries early in the piece, get straight onto your recovery, Ladies ... 19.01.2022 ON THIS DAY 4 years ago, Bears fans congregated at Coburg City Oval to watch history be made as Kew Football Club secured its first premiership in a women’s competition In 2016, women’s football looked somewhat differently to what it does today. AFLW was not yet born and there were only murmurs of Daisy Pearce being ‘one to watch’. Many hadn’t come to terms with women playing football yet. Do you tackle? Do you wear footy boots? Stick to netball. It’s so lo...Continue reading

19.01.2022 Bridgette Steve Allen joined the Bears in November 2019. A proud Kiwi, Steve had been living in London and was now looking for a footy club, and a community, to join in Melbourne. She came to pre-season training fit and eager. Her positive and friendly nature meant she took to the group like she’d been here all along. Though only newly a Bear, Steve was a seasoned footballer having played in London, Amsterdam and New Zealand. Impressively, Steve established women...’s footy in Amsterdam, having spear-headed the Amsterdam Devils Women’s Team in 2018. We knew early on she was a doer! Not long after Steve joined the club, Covid-19 reared its ugly head and threatened the 2020 season. With restricted trainings, new rules and the season in doubt, the club and the playing group were culturally challenged like they hadn’t been before. During this time, Steve saw an opportunity to help others. She worked to ensure our women’s group stayed supported, happy, fit and, above all else, together. It is now the club’s privilege to recognise her immense effort. Having been a Bear for only 5 months, Steve launched a squad-wide challenge in March. She split the female squad into small groups each with a nominated leader, and explained a very competitive points system. From then on, she announced two challenge tasks each week that encouraged fitness, mindfulness, footy skills, Zoom workouts, dress ups and trivia nights, all in the name of point-scoring. There were bonus points, guest judges, special mentions and score updates each week. Steve ran the challenge for three months, with immense buy-in from the women’s squad. The Bears community prides itself on being a family club. We are an inclusive group, who values community and acts of selflessness. 2020 served up a big challenge, and we relied upon the generosity of our players, members and sponsors in ways we haven’t had to in the past. Each year the club recognises somebody who went above and beyond for the club. This year, Steve’s contribution was immeasurable. Her service was authentic and kind-hearted, and valued so deeply by her teammates. It is with great pleasure the club announces Bridgette Allen as the 2020 Clubperson of the Year Award recipient. Congratulations, Bridgette! We can’t wait to finally watch you play your first game in the brown and gold next year. We can only hope you are a fraction of the person on the field as you are off it.

13.01.2022 ON THIS DAY 5 years ago at Coburg City Oval, the Men’s Seniors completed Kew FC’s first ever threepeat in our club’s 144 year history 2015 was a huge year in Division 1 which saw some massive match-ups against our bayside rivals, Ormond, whom we jostled with all season for top spot on the ladder and were seemingly destined to meet in the big dance. When the 12th of September rolled around we were greeted to Piranha Park with a fierce wind blowing to the southe...rn end of the ground and the questions were asked early which way we should kick if given the choice. That decision was ultimately taken out of our hands as the Monders won the toss and elected to take the advantage early. That decision may have proved pivotal as the Bears completely locked down defensively all over the ground and our star-studded back six allowed just one goal for the quarter as we even managed to snag one of our own. The second quarter was absolute show time as Kew piled on 6 unanswered goals to take a 32 point lead into the main break In the premiership quarter, Ormond came out firing with the wind at their backs and bagged six majors of their own, but once again against the gusty winds the Bears were able to force a couple of goals of their own and would hold a 10 point advantage at the final break, knowing the scoring belonged to us for the final half hour. The premiership experience of recent years would not allow Ian Aitken’s men the slightest thought of complacency in the final quarter as Kew kicked another four goals to Ormond’s one, and the premiership became a certainty as Michael Henderson sold some candy and kicked the sealer to start the party early Big game specialist, Kyle Margaritis ran riot up and down the wing all day and deservedly claimed the best on ground honours for a second consecutive grand final, while skipper Michael Cochrane kept the opposition full-forward goalless once again just as he did in the Semi-Final two weeks prior. Jack Delbridge racked up clearance after clearance as he put on a display worthy of what would be his first (of many) Terry Hayes medals that year. Celebrations went well into the night (and a good or week so after) as expected and a group of amateur footballers knew they’d achieved a remarkable feat that would live on in the club’s history for many decades to come
