23.01.2022 Running a busines has lots of operations you need to take into account. One of the most important factors to take in account is to protect your personal and financial information. There are scammers that often try to ‘phish’ for information. This is done by impersonating government agencies such as the ATO and other businesses. Once scammers receive your information this is what they could do with the information:... drain your bank account establish fake businesses in your name gain access to your online government services scam your clients and employees. Scammers have learnt and take many opportunities to trick you into giving away your valuable information. So how can you keep your business safe: use complex passwords and change them regularly remove system access for people who no longer work for you log out of systems and lock computers when you're not using them maintain up-to-date security and anti-virus software on computers and other devices. To stay safe when you're dealing with government services online do the following: don't access services via a hyperlink in an email or SMS access services through an independent online search if you're ever in doubt, look up the service's phone number separately and call them to check. If you come across a scam or want to find out more information, go https://www.scamwatch.gov.au

22.01.2022 Protect Against Online Scam & Fraud Unfortunately, in the world today there are many email and telephone scammers out there, and there is a need to know what to do to protect yourself and your finances. These scammers attack both business and personal. But how do you know if it is a scam or real? What are the best ways to protect your online personal and business dealings?... Below are ways to identify the different types of scams. Many of these I have had come across my business and personal emails. PHISHING EMAIL They are generic emails The URL’s look deceptive and unauthentic (eg [email protected]) The emails would look wrong such as the logo in wrong place, wrong design or type and the information out of date. FAKE EMAIL In the email a false sense of urgency They have some type of attachment Threats that if you do not take action then action will be taken against you If you are unsure email is legitimate login into your account and see if anything has been reported as urgent or contact the company and enquire about what you have received. This can be done via email or telephone call. Do not respond back on the email you received if unsure if it is real or not. WAYS TO IDENTIFY AS A SCAM There is a promise of money in return of a favour Notification that you have won the lottery and asking for personal details Unsolicited job offers Companies requesting you to update your personal details (before doing anything in response always check email address, logos, etc. Always double check with the company and if they require you to, they will let you know. Never call the phone number on email always search the business for correct phone number.) For example, I have received some from Netflix, PayPal even ATO which were not from those companies. HOW TO KEEP SECURE ONLINE ACCOUNTS Password 8 characters long with mixture of Upper letter, lower letter, numbers and symbols Never use everyday words, names, postcode, car rego, birth dates or anniversary dates Keep all login details private, not even to family and memorise them. Change your passwords regularly but not routinely. So do not have a routine for example every 3rd Saturday of the month. If you feel you have been hacked change all passwords and virus scan your computer and phones. Never use the same password on multiple sites. Don’t save your passwords through browser. Contact the company/business concerned if you suspect someone has had access to your account via telephone. For example, your bank, Netflix, Apple etc

Never click on the links go directly to site or contact the company you are dealing with.
