21.01.2022 The spring sun and snapper season are seeing large numbers of fishers flocking to Port Phillip to enjoy Victoria’s most popular fishery. And while it’s great to... see so many families out safely enjoying their time on the water, our officers are out making sure people are doing the right thing. Recently officers have received numerous reports via the 13 FISH reporting hotline of illegal fishing in the Ricketts Point Marine Sanctuary, near Beaumaris. Fisheries Officers have responded by patrolling this area using both marked and unmarked boats and jet-skis and a large number of infringement notices have been issued. Investigations are continuing to identify further possible offending by boaters that left the marine protected area prior to officers being able to speak with them. Fishers should always familiarise themselves with marine park boundaries before they leave home. The VFA’s VicFishing app also features a Can I Fish Here? function, which uses your phone’s GPS location to determine whether you are within a marine park or sanctuary. The app also contains a digital copy of the recreational fishing guide, so you can stay across bag and catch limits whenever and wherever you’re fishing. The app can be downloaded free from the App Store or Google Play: www.vfa.vic.gov.au/vicfishingapp As always, if you suspect illegal fishing is taking place at any time, ring our 24/7 reporting hotline, 13 FISH (13 3474), to speak directly to a Fisheries Officer. Make the call make the difference. #fisheriesofficersatwork #marinepark #portphillipbay

20.01.2022 Hastings Boat Ramp Construction Update Construction continues to move at a rapid rate with the final boat ramp panel concrete pours taking place. Next wee...k, accompanying works will be carried out to move towards completing the physical construction of the ramp. These works will include constructing the concrete edge kerbing, installing the central mountable kerbs, placing rock at the base of the ramp, and reinstating the asphalt at the top edge of the ramp. Following the ramp construction, several on-site activities will then take place prior to the ramp re-opening. The large cofferdam (temporary formwork) will be disassembled and removed from site, with a new pontoon extension then lifted into place to connect the newly constructed ramp to the existing pontoon / jetty. A large crane, heavy machinery, materials and temporary site offices will then be removed from the area to provide access to the ramp. With the ramp construction and on-site activities progressing as quickly and safely as possible, the ramp is expected to be re-opened from mid-November. To stay up to date on the project, further updates will be provided via Mornington Peninsula Shire webpage: www.mornpen.vic.gov.au/hastingsboatramp

13.01.2022 Feel Free To Share Yesterday, I thought I was up for a bit of exercise so I went for a walk inside my 25km radius down at Patterson River. Upon arrival I found ...that I was not on my own but a small portion of Victoria's boat owners thought it would be a good day to get their recreation with 25km of home also. Now I should also emphasize that it was the first day the ramp traffic was being managed by a stop go traffic management company after the Hogan crew were unceremoniously booted from the gig because their 25 years of perfect operation was not enough experience (that's another story for another day). Driving into launching way at 0515 I was met with a high vis reflective sign reading "BOAT PARKING FULL - USE MORDIALLOC OR FRANKSTON" I thought this was odd considering only folks within 25km can launch here and surely with no queue in sight things we not right. I preceded to drive my car with no boat or trailer attached down to the launching area. First thing I saw was cars aplenty parked in the trailer parking areas with no trailers, trailers all over the place trying to launch boats in chaos and no immediate sign of any traffic management. I continued to drive down the ramp way when I made my first sight of a stop go worker in a ute. parked with lights ablaze with boats on trailers whizzing in and around him all over the place. You see he had parked in the area normally reserved for trailers waiting to launch. With a slight chuckle at the mess I was watching I headed down to the overflow parking area. This was the icing on the cake, remember the sign saying ramp full. The overflow was locked and still empty, meaning a conservative 90 more spaces available. We counted 68 cars with no trailer parked in boat trailer parking areas meaning with overflow and cars blocking parking this meant there was still 158 places to park trailers. Why on earth was the ramp advertised as full when it was only about 60% capacity. I stopped my car for a moment at the shop/gatehouse on the way out, in approx 20 minutes I saw at least 15 cars with trailer turn around and leave without venturing over the hill to see the ramp. As I left I pulled up at the entrance and although the ramp was not full the sign remained. DEWLP, the ministers office and Better Boating Victoria have some serious questions to answer here. In 2 years what have BBV done to make boating better in Victoria? Why would we divert launching to Mordialloc when Launching way is not full and Modialloc only holds 18 trailers? Why would we divert launching to Frankston where a mobile cafe and food truck block trailer parking and council does not enforce boat trailer only parking rules and is full of cars. Why was the overflow locked at 0530 on a public holiday? Who Authorized a ramp full and diversion sign to be placed when ramp was not only not full but only at 60% capacity? If traffic diversions were required because of capacity why was the you beaut camera system BBV is sprouting about saying open and quiet? The questions could go on - is this the new norm for Better Boating Victoria. Chaos, confusion, bad management of ramps and traffic, wasted money on cameras and apps that dont work, wasted money on playgrounds, wasted money on gardens, wasted money on upgrades where upgrades are not needed all while we watch in horror as our facilities breakdown around us. Ramp Rage will return and we will not accept this mediocracy of mismanagement and blatant waste of our money any longer, we are watching and we will hold those responsible to account. *note this was at a time where 25km restrictions are still in place and ramp was not all that busy. 12.01.2022 With cod opening just around the corner, the Golden Tag team has been busy in Victoria’s northwest tagging fish in the Lindsay, Mullaroo, Gunbower Creek and Kin...gs Billabong. Some fish received a $10,000 tag and others a $2,000 one. Either way, it’s going to make for an exciting cod opening come 1 December. Where are you heading for cod opening this year? 10.01.2022 13 FISH to the rescue! Thanks to a call from 13 FISH, Fisheries Officers were able locate and eventually remove these illegal opera house nets before they coul...d do any damage at a water near Ballarat. Remember, opera house nets cannot be used in both public and private waters in Victoria. If it’s yabbies you’re after, try using open top lift nets or hoop nets instead. 07.01.2022 Amazing news! This year’s scientific survey of the Gippsland Lakes has recorded the second highest abundance of baby black bream in the last 10 years. These sur...veys are undertaken annually by VFA scientists at 50 sites in the Gippsland Lakes system. Using specialised techniques, juvenile black bream less than one year old (typically under 10cm) are sampled to provide a snapshot of how successful the previous spawning season was. Spawning variation from year to year is normal and influenced by environmental factors such as river flows and waterway health, however the trend over the last 4 years is significantly better than the 6 years prior. Black bream take about 6 years to reach their minimum size of 28cm, which means this strong pulse of small bream will enter the fishery from 2026/27 BUT, you won’t have to wait that long! The strongest spawning event of the past 10 years occurred in 2017, which means they’ll be abundant and ready to catch in 2023/24! Want to have your say on the Gippsland Lakes Recreational Fishery Plan? It’s currently out for public consultation until 28 October!
