20.01.2022 African swine fever (ASF) has recently been detected in Indonesia. ASF is a highly contagious viral disease of domestic and wild pigs. An outbreak of ASF in Aus...tralia would have significant impacts on pig production and health, and the livelihoods of thousands of Australians. Anyone travelling or returning to Australia from Indonesia must ensure they meet our strict biosecurity conditions to help keep our agriculture industry free of this disease. All high risk pig products and meat products of any origin are prohibited from entering Australia. This includes all personal consignments of smallgoods, pork jerky and pork biltong, which can arrive with international travellers and via international mail. Commercially imported pig meat products must be retorted or cured under very specific conditions to inactivate viruses, or be sourced from disease-free countries which have been approved by the department. Travellers arriving in Australia are required by law to complete an Incoming Passenger Card. You must be completely honest and declare if you are carrying any food, animal products, or other items that may represent a biosecurity risk. Clothing, shoes or equipment should be free from soil. You must advise biosecurity officers if you have visited farming areas or if you are carrying clothing or equipment that has been in contact with pigs. For further information on arriving in Australia, visit agriculture.gov.au/arriving-in-australia

19.01.2022 Catch us at Nundah Farmers Markets every weekend!

19.01.2022 The drought across QLD, NSW and VIC is costing the lives of livestock, the livelihoods of many and leaving devastation in its wake. We too are affect by the drought. After 24+ years of farming in Toowoomba our water allocation for our bore was cut. Despite the numerous droughts we have seen never before has our allocation been reduced. ... The impact of this on us? On Christmas Day last year we closed our hydroponic salad farm. It was a heartbreaking decision but there was no other economically viable option. This not only affected us and our customers but also cost around 12 full time positions. We are the lucky ones though we have just reopened a small section managed by 1 person and have our free range egg farm. The drought affects us all. An Australian farmer on average feeds 600 people daily and supplys around 93% of the daily domestic food supply. Farming and agriculture is an industry of adaption, of innovation, of constantly facing challenges often unseen by the public. But we need help. Farmers need help. We need support and awareness. How can you help? There is no one answer but here are some suggestions 1. Shop locally and support farmers and businesses 2. If you friends or family are farmers reach out - maybe there is something specific you can do for them! 3. Donate - Drought Angels (Hamper and Financial assistance), One Bucket and Rural Aid (mental health initiative) are a good places to start 4. Raise awareness - start a conversation with friends and family! Tag and share videos and posts on FB and Insta 5. Follow pages talking about the drought - One Bucket is a great place to start. Dorothea Mackellar said in her famous poem My Country, I love a sunburnt country A land of sweeping plains Of ruffles mountain ranges Of droughts and flooding plains. The rain will come again, it always does but till it does keep farmers in your thoughts and actions. #onebucket #droughtangels #droughtawareness #toowoombaregion #kfarm #ruralaid #thankafarmer #thankafarmerforyournextmeal

17.01.2022 How interesting is this?

17.01.2022 Dear Government, You have it all wrong and you are killing our Agricultural industry As I watch on the morning shows today, the excitement and pats on the back... as more funding is announced for farmers, I cant help but feel frustrated because the simple truth is, our government just doesnt get it. You are throwing money into a Funding Bucket where you have the lid on so tight people cannot get into it!! Pure and simple. I am an accountant in Tenterfield NSW. It is no secret our town is doing it tough. We have been in the spotlight the last 4 weeks from fires and our town running out of water, and there is no end in sight. I work for clients in Tenterfield and across the east coast of Australia and predominately our client base are farmers. And heres the kicker. I have ONE client, that is receiving farm household allowance. You are hearing me right. One! So lets have a look at some of the reasons why that is; 1. Income So these farmers are destocking because they have no feed and water. This is then assessed as INCOME. So when income tests are being applied to the assessment of eligibility, they are above the income limits. There is no consideration for the nature of this income, or that they are forced to sell or that this income will be used to restock. Income is viewed as too high, No support! 2. Assets farmers are de-stocking because there is no food and water. Although prices are tough this is still cash that will sit in an account, or reduce an overdraft, until they are able to come out the other side of the drought and buy more cattle, to again trade. If they dont hold this money then they will need to go into significant debt to restock. Add to this the value of their land, that is currently creating more pain than gain, and they have too many assets. No Support! 3. Farmers have had to pay back prior years support I kid you not. Farmers have been on support in prior drought times and now on reconciliation of their income from 3 years ago it is discovered that their income was higher than estimated. This is because they needed to reduce some debt on their farm enterprise for peace of mind, commercial viability and to satisfy the bank manager. In comes bank, please reduce debt, farmer sells livestock to create cashflow to do so, this is reported as INCOME. It hasnt been taxable as accountants can defer forced sale events from drought for tax purposes, but it is certainly assessed as income for farm household allowance so the client gets a bill of $25k and told they need to repay this. And this is all going on while these farmers are in the toughest drought we have seen in decades. Correct they are currently paying back these debts out of the very limited income they have, whilst getting no additional support for this present drought. 4. If you work a job and have a farm, the drought doesnt bother you again excuse my sarcasm but are you serious? In the current times of living costs, higher debt and two income families, a lot of farmers work jobs as well as the farm. As part of the income support assessment if the majority of income does not come from farming youre on your own. So these farmers are out contracting, working other jobs just to cover their costs and put food on the table, so they do not get farm support as they have other off farm income. I might add that this cancels out all other support also such as freight rebates and water infrastructure assistance. 5. Youve made a profit there is no support for you now. So we are now penalising our good operators. The ones that have been able to make farming sustainable. They plan, they plan and they plan. They operate like a business and focus on making a profit. We are handing money out to producers that have not made a profit ever (which I do agree they also need) but the sad reality is the farmers that do this well and operate a good business get no help. Penalise the good operators. Why is this so backward? These are the producers you are going to need in the next 24 months as they will be the only ones you have left. They are the only ones that will be able to sustain this, and persevere through it as they have done before so how about a hand to get through this time. Where is Australia going to get its livestock from in 18 months time? What is going to happen to the agriculture industry, a major industry in the Australian economy if we do not get this right and support the producers that have the ability to keep it going? I have been in consultation with our previous agriculture minister, and their office has in the past been very responsive to my questions relative to client assessments, but have continued to say the system is being reviewed. So at what point are we going to ensure the assessment or eligibility for farm support is reasonable, fair and effective? Like I said you can add to the fund bucket all day long, but if farmers are not eligible for the payment you are reaching no one and helping only a few. Our government need to apply more attention to the assessment process to ensure all of our farmers are getting some form of support because regardless of what they did yesterday and how they performed in the last 12 months, its now that counts and without it, Agriculture in Australia will not survive. 09.01.2022 We have a new dog here at Kfarm: Bob! He is a border collie - he wasnt very good a chasing cows though so now he gets to chase around some chickens!

08.01.2022 Initially, I wasnt sure if I could post this; but I feel it is our duty, as custodians of this great land, to share, educate and bring to life what has happene...d and is happening right now in North West Queensland, Australia. And this is a HUGE part of Beryls amazing story.....still now, surviving, against all odds..... On the 29th of January, our prayers were answered and the horrendous prolonged drought of 2018 (and for others a lot longer) was broken. Rejoice!!!! 80mm of pure gold rain water fell from the sky. However, our sheer delight soon faded to worry and finally absolute heartbreak and devastation as over the next 11 days; over 32 inches of rain fell over our great and amazing property. This total is above our ANNUAL rainfall - and we got that in just 11 days. The elements were against us. Constant rain, howling winds and cold cold weather saw our livelihoods, pets, mates and family members start to die due to exposure. And not only that, record breaking floods have swept across our great region, killing literally hundreds of thousands of cattle. Horses, sheep, goats also included. But also wiping out kangaroos, emus, lizards and all kinds of native animals. It is said that over 800 properties have been effected. An area of land twice the size of Tasmania, and, the size of France - has been covered by flood waters. This is a complete and utter national disaster. A leading Australian Industry has been king hit!! And we need to get whats happening out there - out across Australia and out to our friends across the pond. Please know also that there was literally nothing anyone could do. Higher ground you say? Where would we have taken them? Mt Everest? Put them in shelter you say - how do you fit 4000-50000 head in a shed? We couldnt even GET to these animals to move them. We are so passionate about where we live, what we do and our communities - and if we could have done something - we would have. Our property alone has lost 90%+ of the cattle that were living on this property, we had nearly 4000 here. To put into perspective, that is our next 2-3 years income completely gone. And we are some of the luckier ones. Our houses never went under and we managed to save our horses in time. So back to Beryl. She has been living in a paddock for about 12 months now away from our homestead. It was important to us to let her be with other cows and also, to have a little baby of her own. The rains started and we werent too worried. But as the days kept on with the conditions and we could see that around our house, weaners were dropping like flies (no matter what shelter we provided or what hay and feed we put out.) We were getting desperately worried about Beryl and her fate. The rain eased and there was a break in the weather so Jake ploughed out to her paddock. We were pacing anxiously around the two-way to hear of any news. I found Lilly was the first call. Lilly is my nieces poddy calf, similar in age to Beryl. I was beside myself. Nearly an hour passed and we heard Ive found Beryl - shes been living by herself out the back of this ridge eating prickle bush. We realise, finding two Brahmans amongst 4000 is no great win. But boy oh boy it was good for the soul. And as the tears flowed Jake bought them home and finally we had them safely with us. And a whole lotta nice was put into our hearts for the day. The timing was so lucky - the weather didnt break for another two days - it was so cold - and I can guarantee if Jake didnt go and get her - she wouldnt have survived. So now she hasnt left the house. Shes back on her blanket and back into Sayos and Jatz crackers. And I am happy my little love is home. But my heart is heavy. Heavy for my family, heavy for my friends and heavy for our community. Flood waters are dropping but this is no where near being over. Dead animals are literally, at every direction we look. My husband and my brother in law have been hectically trying to get hay to animals that have survived but have not eaten in literally 10 days besides a few prickly thorns off an old prickly bush. Every single person for hundreds of kilometres is doing the exact same thing. Fighting for our animals, our livelihoods and, fighting for the ability for AUSTRALIA and the WORLD to see what is happening right here, right now. And fighting for you, to help us! There has been a number of amazing people and organisations get on board straight away. Ive pinned to the top of this page some links, that if you wish, you can donate to our catastrophic disaster. To the amazing and resilient people of NW Queensland. I have no words but a whole lotta love and a rum when all of this is over. To the local councils you guys have done an amazing job. To all the angels of the sky, the helicopter pilots, words are not enough. The army has also done an amazing job helping to get fodder out to places cut off from everywhere. But the locals - the local people have been and are amazing. They are living this nightmare themselves - but still helping each other. And there is still fences to mend, turkey nests, dams, pipelines, troughs to fix......the next 12 months is going to be really tough. And thats an understatement. So as you go to bed, or as you wake. Hold your family a little tighter, feed your pets a little extra, smile at a complete stranger. Life could be so much worse. And please, if you can, give a little to a place that has always, given a lot. And please, buy Australian beef! Love from Beryl and her home Balootha

05.01.2022 * Please read until the end, and share, assistance linked * My heart breaks for the everyone involved in the flooding in North Queensland. What has particularl...y hit close to home is the devastation our graziers are facing. From the excessive drought, wondering if itll ever rain to life changing flooding. It might not be clear, or it might be hard to comprehend and photos will not do justice of what is happening, but these people have spent their lives nurturing and caring for these animals, and to have their livelihood taken so harshly is a significant emotional hit. Monetary/financial strain aside, while that too is significant, these farmers, including my loved ones - my family, are faced with a devastation that has broken their hearts. With both the good days and the bad days, I have never been around harder working, more devoted and passionate people then those of the land and although I live in Brisbane now, I am proud to be apart of that lifestyle and have been raised on the land. Home is where the heart is! My thoughts are with all those who are effected. Tough times dont last, tough people do Lets get behind our graziers, please spread awareness. *A small minority of photos from this disaster. * (Funding) https://littlewindmills.com.au/ https://www.daf.qld.gov.au//natural-disaster/declared-areas http://www.qrida.qld.gov.au/current-progr/Disaster-recovery https://www.qcwa.org.au/what-we-do/public-rural-crisis-fund/ (Other Assistance) https://www.qld.gov.au//disasters-eme/financial-assistance http://www.qrida.qld.gov.au//disaster-assistance-primary-p
