25.01.2022 Well, harvest has started here and, slightly inconveniently, so has shearing! No fleece weighing here on the farm this year for various reasons, but our gear and my assistance is still available for anyone wanting to fleece weigh, any time of the year. See one of my earlier posts for an outline of what gear we have. Ill be locked in a header or tractor cab from now up until about Christmas so my apologies if Im sometimes a bit slow to get back to you, thanks to long hours and dodgy phone range in some paddocks. Nothing worse than trying to talk to someone on the phone when they are dropping in and out of signal so I do try and avoid it for your benefit. Texts and emails are ideal though. Anyway, Ill leave you with a dodgy selfie from the header cab (shoutout to AgPro Management for the hat) and wish you all a happy and safe harvest!
24.01.2022 Although based in Wagin, I am more than happy to travel around the state if you require my services. Geraldton to Esperance- nothing is too far and I will often try to organise other client visits in your area or on the way to save on travel fees. Although, Im a sucker for the Stirlings (pictured) so bonus points if youve got a view of them or another brilliant landmark! Or there is always the option of phone or email if you are just after some advice, data management or an EID related chat.
23.01.2022 James at AgricUltra is running some EID groups starting in July- get in touch with him for more info.
23.01.2022 Wishing everyone a happy and safe Christmas and New Year. Thankyou all for your support throughout the year and I look forward to working with you again in 2020!Wishing everyone a happy and safe Christmas and New Year. Thankyou all for your support throughout the year and I look forward to working with you again in 2020!
23.01.2022 With lambing starting soon for many in southern WA, if not already for those early lambers, youre probably also thinking about ordering ear tags for those lambs. A great way to progress into EID is to start tagging lambs with electronic tags now so that whenever you are ready to start collecting data in a few years time, youve already got the tags in, ready to go. It doesnt matter how long the tags sit there doing nothing, they will still be good to go whenever you are. As for the price- yes they cost slightly more than a standard tag but I assure you the investment is worth it and the price should just be considered as another standard, fixed husbandry cost. Give me a call or email any time for advice on what brand of tags, what printing or any other questions you may have- I am always willing to help.
22.01.2022 A prime example of how having individual animal data can help with informed decision making in tough times. Knowing this cow had produced good quality calves, including twins in past pregnancies and maintained a herd average weight, allowed these producers to invest in hand feeding a cow that was most likely to give them positive returns when the drought broke. Recording data like this on your cattle, particularly pregnancy scanning results, is something KG Livestock Services is able to help with through advice, data collection and/or equipment hire. You’ve already got the NLIS tags so why not!
21.01.2022 With ewe pregnancy scanning coming up soon for most WA farmers, this is an opportune time to record some important individual animal data on your ewes. Number of lambs conceived is an easy to record and valuable piece of information to have, particularly if you keep drys or are interested in which ewes are having twins year after year. There are a few different ways to record pregnancy status, depending on the equipment, software, labour, time and yard space you or your scan...ner have available. Normally I would offer to come out and help clients collect this data (I dont do preg scanning myself though, sorry) but unfortunately, due to regional travel restrictions coming in to place, I am stuck in Wagin/ the Wheatbelt region for the foreseeable future and unable to do this. However I can quite easily talk you through your options and work out a plan that suits your system to get this data collected. Pictured below is a partial example of how we collect preg status on the farm I work on, using a third party software (KoolCollect), auto record board (EID tags tek screwed onto a piece of plywood with labels) and a stick reader. Give me a call or email on the contact details on this page if youd like to have a chat about any of this. Also a reminder that I am available for data management services if you want someone to collate and sort your data for you. All youd need to do is email it to me, so its something I can quite easily do for you from isolation. Take care, Kelly
21.01.2022 KG Livestock Services will be attending the Frankland Rural Animal Health information morning next Tuesday, the 4th of June, and speaking quickly about EIDs and the services we offer, including an exciting new product coming to WA that enables producers to match lambs to ewes quickly and accurately. EID Tag supplier Allflex will also be in attendance and there will be some Gallagher equipment to have a look at and play with. So if youve run out of milk and the fridge is empty after the long weekend, come along for a complementary breakfast and morning tea and wean yourself back into the work week with some interesting and informative guest speaker sessions.
21.01.2022 Off to Esperance and surrounds this week. Looking forward to meeting some more great farmers from this area and having a bit of R&R at the same time. What are your favourite places/ beaches to visit in and around Esperance? Although I’m not opposed to having more beach time, I do have time available on Wednesday and Thursday afternoons for consults if anyone would like to catch up and discuss anything electronic tagging related for sheep or cattle.
19.01.2022 With lambing season upon us, its time to think about how you will mother up lambs with ewes to determine maternal pedigree this season. A fairly quick, easy, less labour intensive option is Smart Shepherd proximity sensor collars. Simply put a collar on each EID tagged ewe and lamb for 48hours and the technology will determine which lamb/s belong to which ewe. Suitable for lambs up to approx 12 weeks of age. These were very popular among studs and nucleus flock breeders he...re in WA last year. Determining maternal pedigree not only helps with tracing genetics, you can also then assess ewe performance (lamb rearing ability) and follow through from scanning to weaning. If interested in hiring the collars, send me an email and I can forward a booking form or more info and pricing.
19.01.2022 Another fleece weighing job the other week, this time for stud rams which was a nice change of pace compared to the usual full shearing shed. We were able to bring all the required fleece weighing equipment, with the stick reader supplied by the client, and adjust our process to fit the change of pace and number of shearers. A few of the rams didnt have EID tags yet so we were able to put one in on the board (thanks to the tolerant shearers from the Jumbuck Shearing team) and use the stick reader to match up the new EID tag to the existing stud tag right then and there. We had some pretty cute supervisors too. Sorry, I cant supply them- thered be some very upset kids at that farm if theyd stowed away in my ute!
19.01.2022 Great little article here from MLA on how a WA producer is using EIDs in their stud sheep and the benefits they have seen in using the technology, both economic and social. "An economic analysis of their initial investment... showed the Walkers are on track to save $118,000 over 10 years, with every dollar invested returning $11 in savings." https://www.mla.com.au//indust/eid-saving-time-and-money/
18.01.2022 Busy day in Kojonup, fleece weighing some ewe hoggets for a client. Demonstrated a very interesting range in fleece production between animals that have all been treated and raised exactly the same. Here, my offsider scans the sheeps eID tag with the Gallagher XR5 tag reading wand which is Bluetooth connected to the barcode printer that she has on her hip. The barcode is then placed on a clip next to the shearer who is shearing that sheep, ready for the rousies to grab when the fleece is ready to go. More videos of the process in the comments. Fleece weighing gear used here was all hired through KG Livestock Services.
17.01.2022 We have decided to start breeding some of our own rams on the property I work on, so needed to select which ewes we wanted to use in our nucleus flock. We spent some time going through the lifetime lamb productivity and hogget fleece weight data on the computer to find our top ewes, plugged the final list into the Tru-Test XR5000 and TePari auto drafter and just sat back and kept the sheep up as they were drafted accordingly for us. Doing a 3 way draft here with nucleus mob ewes going left, non-nucleus blue tag ewes going right and anything else going straight ahead. All parts of this process, from collecting the data, analysing it, setting up draft lists and anything in between, is something KG Livestock Services can help you with.
17.01.2022 I’ve had the privilege of doing a bit of contract work at the WA sites for this trial, who have seen much of the same results as Emma discusses here. One site is north of Geraldton, proving you don’t need to be in a high rainfall zone for this to work in your system. Electronic tags have enabled hosts to take and accurately record measurements on each individual ewe throughout the trial.
17.01.2022 If anyone has been looking to get a basic sheep handler, looks like there is a Combi Clamp on offer at this clearing sale in Kojonup. I have no further details, you would need to contact Elders Kojonup for any inquiries in regards to what load bars/ scales or indicator it may come with etc.

15.01.2022 Great article from MLA here, making many of the same points I often make about the benefits of recording pregnancy status against EID. https://www.mla.com.au//in/scanning-for-success-with-eid/
15.01.2022 Elders Cranbrook have put together a great lineup of presentations and equipment demos for this event, not often seen all together outside of the major field days. This would be a fantastic opportunity to compare products side by side and perhaps look into some upgrades or additions to your EID equipment. I gather there will also be some lamb marking weigh crates/ handlers/ options on display which I know a few of you are interested in. The water related topics and products would also be of interest to a lot of us who are running/ have run out of water. RSVPs due by this Wednesday!

13.01.2022 Couldnt have said it better myself!
13.01.2022 We did our first Smart Shepherd proximity sensor collar deployment for the 2019 lambing season last week. 285 collars fitted to a mob of ewes and their lambs for 48hrs to determine dam parentage. These ewes were also single sire mated, so each lamb now has a full parentage record. KG Livestock Services has access to 500 of these collars, so if you would like to use them, or for more information, give us a call today. Kelly: 0409 060 065
13.01.2022 Great for fixed position use such as on scales or handlers.
12.01.2022 Interesting article that looks at the traceability side of eID use for biosecurity and over the hook tracking at processing, as well as the international demand for meat that can be traced back to its specific place of origin. Would love to hear your thoughts on discussion points from this article.
12.01.2022 Ewe pregnancy scanning is now in full swing around much of the state- offering a good opportunity to measure and record individual animal information. Recording each ewes preg status against their electronic tag number gives a very useful measure of how many lambs each ewe conceives (and hopefully raises) in her lifetime and thus her value to your lamb production enterprise. KG Livestock Services can help collect, collate and/ or analyse this EID data or simply discuss strategies for collecting and using the information. We also have data collection equipment available to hire, including an auto record board which is particularly useful if your preg scanner is foetal ageing. Give Kelly a call today to get organised
11.01.2022 Its been a very busy few weeks for KG Livestock Services! Weve been all over the countryside with the Smart Shepherd proximity sensor collars, matching up ewes and lambs to determine their pedigree, with lamb marking and crutching back on the farm in between. Last of our ~5500 lambs being done today, after being rained out when we tried to finish last week. Im then off on another quick fleece weighing job tomorrow for a farmer who wants to know how much wool each of his home bred rams are cutting. We are providing all the gear including handheld tag reader, barcode printer, scales and indicator. If you want to know more about any of the services we offer, please get in touch and well see what we can do.
11.01.2022 Fat and muscle scanning ram lambs the other day, with thanks to Liz from Genstock Pty Ltd . We used a stick reader to scan the animal in the crate and KoolCollect to record Liz’s measurements and then the TePari handler with panel reader and indicator to record body weights. There are a multitude of different ways to record this information depending on your set up, labour availability, time etc. KG Livestock Services are able to help you work this out and aid in the data collection and analysis process.
09.01.2022 Wishing you all a happy and safe new year and all the best for 2019. I look forward to working with more of you to assist with all your eID data and implementation needs.
09.01.2022 Collected a heap of animal data over the years but havent got around to getting it off your device, onto your computer and into a data management program? Youre not alone and I can help. I really dont mind how much, how old or how messy, I can get it sorted for you. Call me anytime. Like most, Im tied to an air conditioned cab for harvest duties until about Christmas time so I have plenty of time to talk, phone range permitting, as is standard!
06.01.2022 Nifty little option for pen cards!
06.01.2022 Another great day coming up, this time in Borden. This event aims to demonstrate how EID technology can be used on farm as well as beyond- including at the Katanning Saleyards and at abattoirs like WAMMCO for individual animal hook tracking and feedback to the producer. Link to register is in the Farm Weekly article.
05.01.2022 Were excited to have added a new item to our EID data collection range, with the purchase of a Gallagher TWR-5 indicator. These are a highly versatile piece of equipment with a combination of touch screen and keyboard functions and the ability to connect to a wide range of other EID related equipment. I will be using the TWR-5 for both sheep and cattle data collection jobs such as fleece weighing, classing and pregnancy status recording, among others. If you are looking to invest in an indicator and would like to try this with the equipment you already have, I am happy to bring it out for a day of data collection work too.
05.01.2022 Thanks to the Farm Weekly for this write up on us in the paper last week.
04.01.2022 I am looking to organise a trip to Esperance in mid to late February and will be available for consults and assistance with data collection activities. KG Livestock Services is an advisory business that aims to help livestock producers with the transition to electronic tags- providing advice and knowledge on what is needed, how it all works and a transition strategy suited to the clients and their business objectives. We also offer data collection services such as fleece we...ighing and recording of data from pregnancy scanning, fat/ muscle scanning, animal weights, trait measurements etc. and I can bring the equipment for these jobs with me on this trip. If you are interested in catching up for a chat or a consult while I am down (or on my way to/ from Esperance from Wagin) or would like more information on my services, please feel free to contact me via this page or on M: 0409 060 065
04.01.2022 On the road again (well, aeroplane anyway) on Tuesday, heading up to Irwin/ Geraldton for this event. Great range of speakers and topics which I am looking forward to being a part of. Particularly interested in the 6 month shearing trial which Ive been involved in and is showing some very exciting results! If anyone from up that way wants to catch up to discuss EID on their property, Ive got some spare time Wednesday morning before I fly back.
04.01.2022 With the mandatory NLIS tags that cattle have, adding in a bit of electronic tagging equipment to your beef production system is quite easy to do. This article from Gallagher shows how a station family in the Murchison adopted EID technology to help them manage their cattle better in the middle of a drought and aid in their decision making. https://am.gallagher.com//robust-simple-gallagher-twr-5-su
04.01.2022 Looking forward to speaking to current and prospective Dorper producers at this event in March. Will I see any of you there? For anyone interested in attending, see the flyer for details on how to register. I can also be available for consults in the Donnybrook and surrounding areas that weekend.
03.01.2022 Looking forward to attending the WA Sheep Expo and Ram Sale at Katanning on Thursday and Friday this week. I’ll have some EID equipment on display and happy to discuss ASBV’s and electronic data collection with stud breeders and ram buyers alike.
02.01.2022 Busy couple of days last week, weighing ewe lambs to select which ones to join in a couple of weeks time. A job made easy with our Te Pari sheep handler! Ive since downloaded the data off the Tru-Test XR5000, added it to our excel ewe lamb life data master file and also imported the sessions into Koolcollect. All tasks that I can do for you or help you with. Get in touch today.
02.01.2022 Well there you go! Amazing the things you find out through the use of DNA testing.
02.01.2022 Geraldton sheep farmers! I will be up your way in either the last week of August or the second week of September and am available for EID advisory consults. Covering sheep and cattle (or goats or whatever you might put an electronic tag in!), I am able to answer many of the questions you may have about electronic tagging, data collection and data management. I will also be bringing my Smart Shepherd collars up for a job, so if you are interested in using these to mother up your ewes and lambs to determine maternal parentage, please get in touch ASAP as I am booking up very quickly. If youd like more information on these collars, send me a PM or email and Ill gladly answer any questions you have.
02.01.2022 A happy little lamb, proudly showing off the Smart Shepherd collar she got to wear for two days at my first SS job of the season.
02.01.2022 Free demonstration event in Manypeaks next week. There is also one in Bremer the day before. Although primarily focussing on the Gallagher Weston Fencing options, there will be the opportunity to view and discuss electronic ID equipment (and other Gallagher products) with the Gallagher reps. I will be in the area and am hoping to get to this Manypeaks event if anyone wants to catch up.
02.01.2022 I have just spent two fantastic days in Melbourne at the Sheep Genetics Aus service provider workshop, brushing up on the processes and requirements of submitting data to the database. If you own or manage a sheep stud and want a hand with (or want to handball off!) your data management and submission, give me a call. We can also discuss breed objectives, ASBVs, management and contemporary groups, selection tools (such as MateSel), genomic and parentage testing, etc as well ...as how EID tags and digital recording can help with all this. On another note, Sheep Genetics will be hosting a Regional Forum in Perth in early July. We are looking to also organise a couple of Producer Forums while they are over and possibly a MateSel accreditation workshop. For more information on these or to express interest, visit the Sheep Genetics website or get in touch. Thanks and happy seeding!

01.01.2022 The property I work on decided to try a longer joining period with the ewe lambs this year so we have asked our preg scanner to identify foetuses conceived mid joining as well as our usual early and lates. This means we needed to update our auto record board- so a few leftover RFID tags, some tek screws and a piece of chipboard later, we have an updated board ready for scanning. Quite simple and tags/RFIDs (or barcodes if it suits better) can be customised to represent whatever you want (preg scanning, classing, scoring etc.) with one or multiple levels.
01.01.2022 Ive had the privilege of doing a bit of contract work at the WA sites for this trial, who have seen much of the same results as Emma discusses here.
