20.01.2022 We are in week 7 of our Mill working machinery tour..... stay tuned as we are almost at the finish line! PHASE 7 - THE CONE WINDER Built by Thomas Holt Ltd, ...in Rochdale England in about 1940, our machine spent most of it’s previous life in Geelong VIC @ The McGregor’s Mill, before coming to Nundle Woollen Mill in the late 1990’s. The Cone Winding machine is used to wind the dyed and dried yarn hanks onto cones ready for balling. Machine knitters love this coned yarn as it will fit directly onto their machines, or if you love a long continuous length for a larger project, the coned yarn also very handy indeed! #NundleNSW #buyfromthebush #historicmachinery #textilemachinery #tours #LoveNSW #roadtrip #merinowoold #knitters #australianmade

06.01.2022 Welcome back to our weekly Historic Machine Tour.. PHASE 2: Today we feature Izzy and Vicky working The Carding Machine. Built by the Platt Co. in 1914 at ...Oldham England and purchased in 1989 from Geelong. The Carding process mixes and opens the mass of wool to individual fibres. The fibres are then assembled into a web at the end of the Scribber (first) section. The large metal rollers in the Parelta section are used to crush any vegetable matter in the fibre web. Down the line, the machine further mixes and opens the fibres using the fine wires of the worker and stripper rollers. The fibres are stripped off the carding section by the doffer roller and comb to produce a fine fibre web of constant weight and evenness. This fine web is then split into 100 narrow strips by the tapes in the condenser section before being rubbed with a false twist into the first structure of Yarn, (also known around here as cheese yarn) and wound into cheeses on one of the four levels of the card spools. We wind about 1000 metres of continuous rubbed yarn from each strip onto the spool, which is roughly about 100 km’s of yarn produced every two working hours! Our Tours in the Mill operate Mon Fri, pre-bookings are essential in advance to avoid disappointment.
