25.01.2022 Domestic violence services in NSW and Queensland have written to the Commonwealth and state governments asking that a $150 million funding injection given during the pandemic be renewed as a matter of urgency. They say the lockdowns and recession led to increased demand from domestic violence victims that has not subsided. As well, the renewed spotlight on sexual abuse in the news and from government campaigns has also led to a demand for their services from adult and child survivors of family, domestic and sexual violence. #familylaw #familyviolence #khqfamilylaw https://www.smh.com.au//pandemic-s-domestic-violence-spike

16.01.2022 The role of the Independent Children’s Lawyer is an important one in #familylaw proceedings and their role is to act independently of the parties and on behalf of the children. So what happens when they get it wrong? In the Edwards case, it is asserted that the independent lawyer appointed to represent Jack and Jennifer Edwards misled the Family Court when she characterised their father's violence as mere "heavy-handed parenting" and failed to mention his 18-year police history of domestic violence, an inquest had heard. The ICL also failed to tell the Family Court that Jack and Jennifer had told a psychologist they feared their father because of his violence, and wanted no contact with him. #familylaw #familyviolence #familycourt https://www.smh.com.au//jack-and-jennifer-edwards-lawyer-m

13.01.2022 The family courts will expand a COVID-19 list created to quickly resolve urgent cases during the pandemic as they brace for a new range of virus-related disputes including whether children should be vaccinated. The list was introduced in April and there have been about 430 applications. Most applications have been accepted, and many were heard within three business days of being assessed. The Family Court and Federal Circuit Court of Australia will announce on Sunday that the list will be extended into next year with a widened range of criteria for applications, including matters related to financial and medical issues. #familylaw #covid19 https://www.smh.com.au//family-courts-to-expand-covid-19-p

12.01.2022 Domestic abusers are being put up in hotels across Victoria in a nation-first program holding men to account, instead of forcing victims to flee their homes. Th...e lifesaving program has been described as one of the state’s biggest moves to turn the tables back on men not women and children in a bid to change abusive behaviour. More than 170 perpetrators have been rehoused in hotels and motels across Victoria since the Perpetrator Accommodation Support Service (PASS) launched last August. Russell Hooper from No to Violence, which runs the program in partnership with the Salvation Army, said it was important to shift the burden of violence on to perpetrators. The purpose of our service isn’t about free accommodation for men it’s victims’ safety, he said. STORY: https://www.heraldsun.com.au//6d497837f9f2bda0b0b0f06a6867 See more

07.01.2022 Today is the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. It is the first day of 16 Days of Activism against Gender Violence, which is a gl...obal campaign dedicated to ending gender-based violence. 16 Days is an opportunity for individuals and organisations to call for an end to gender-based violence and appeal to governments to respond to and prevent violence against women. The campaign also raises awareness about the impact of violence on a woman’s physical, psychological, social and spiritual wellbeing. The 16 Days Campaign is not a single event in any one location but rather a coordinated campaign of local, national, regional and international initiatives around the world aimed at demonstrating the solidarity of activists against gender violence around the world. It is held over 16 days from the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women (November 25th) to International Human Rights Day (December 10th). Women and men are encouraged to take the lead in their communities and networks, by speaking out about gender violence and challenging the attitudes that allow violence to continue in our society. #16Days #orangetheworld #EndDV #AdvocateForChange

02.01.2022 A Senate committee has recommended a bill to effect the controversial merger of the specialist Family Court of Australia with the lower-level Federal Circuit Court should be passed despite opposition from Labor and the Greens. 02.01.2022 NSW Police Commissioner Mick Fuller says the force must take responsibility for the shooting deaths of Jack and Jennifer Edwards at the hands of their violent f...ather, John. The systems, processes and people let Jack, Jennifer and Olga Edwards down, for that I am sorry. We have to take responsibility for their deaths, Mr Fuller said in a statement days after a coroner’s findings into the institutional failures that led to Sydney teenagers being killed. Edwards shot Jack, 15, and Jennifer, 13, with a legally owned and acquired Glock pistol at their West Pennant Hills home in north-west Sydney in July 2018. Then he drove home to Hornsby and turned the gun on himself. The children’s mother, Olga, took her own life five months later.
