16.01.2022 Did you know that the Kiama area is home to nearly 400 heritage listed dry stone walls? First built by convicts in the 1830s, our region is one of the few in Australia that used dry stone walls as rural fencing at this time. The majority of the walls were built over 60 years by a prolific stone wall builder named Thomas Newing, whose walls covered a lot of kilometres - from Shellharbour all the way to Berry! He used the local volcanic stone, with two wall faces leaning agains...t each other and a continuous row of larger stones at the top. The wall types resemble stone walls prevalent across Ireland and Britain. You can find many around #saddlebackmountain where some have been repaired by volunteers using the traditional methods. . A quote from Thomas Newing: ‘Stones are like people. Some are good to work with, they fit in anywhere, but others are cranky, you’ve got to humour ‘em. Leave them to one side a bit, and you’ll get a place for them all right.'
