20.01.2022 Violent Femmes - Hallowed Ground, 1984 After the surprise success of their landmark debut, Violent Femmes could have just released another collection of teen-rage punk songs disguised as folk, and coasted into the modern rock spotlight alongside contemporaries like the Modern Lovers and Talking Heads. Instead they made Hallowed Ground, a hellfire-and-brimstone-beaten exorcism that both enraged and enthralled critics and fans alike. First, the rhythm section of the Violent Fe...mmes absolutely smokes. They are creative and vital, and infuse each song with propulsive energy that lesser drummers and bassists would have shied away from. These wonderful, and often weird songs could not have been easy material to work with. But the Violent Femmes sound cohesive and in tune with each other throughout the album, showing that is wasn't just Gordon Gano who was inspired during the making of the record. Secondly, Hallowed Ground sounds great. The production and recording are clean and crisp, and the various whispers, shouts, breezes, and cacophonies are all well-captured, with the drums sounding particularly sharp. Just two more reasons to listen to this special album. Hallowed Ground is essential listening for all fans of alternative rock and indie rock, and highly recommended for fans of dark bluegrass, country gospel, new wave, and punk rock. 13.01.2022 WINDS OF ISIS - Chris Neal - Crossover Prog. Megarare original 1974 Australian only PROGROCK LP Release by Aussie musician CHRIS NEAL, his one and only claim to fame in the progressive rock field is the 1974 Mellotron-drenched instrumental offering Winds Of Isis. Competent, not overly complex work Neal displays good skills on the Mellotron and the other keyboards employed, as well as the various guitars, bass, drums and other percussion he plays. He also has a penchant for ...the Mu-tron synthesiser, which is put to good use throughout WOI. With the exception of some bass playing and drumming on a few tracks, Chris Neal plays all the instruments, somewhat in the mould of Mike Oldfield. At times the music takes on a very Oldfield type of sound, too. 07.01.2022 The Reels - Quasimodo’s Dream in the case of The Reels and Quasimodo’s Dream it is a case of looking back without sentiment, and if any band would eschew the rose-coloured glasses it would be the quixotic Reels. Can you think of any other band that toured the country on the rail system? In a time of guitars and beer the bright colours and pop synthesisers of The Reels were true rebels. They were the band who totally subverted the paradigm of the time, even if it meant conform...ing to it in the extreme. What other ‘indie’ bands would have even thought of teaming up with product marketers K-Tel, let alone making it work for them? But what is left now three decades later is the music, and undeniably these songs stand the test of time. The singles in particular would have been hits in any era, the title track, According To My Heart and After the News are as perfect slices of pop today as they were in 1981, while Shout & Deliver can only brings back memories of Video Hits and Countdown. The album’s darker moments perhaps have more meaning with hindsight, and the closing Kitchen Man leaves a haunted feeling. [City Hub] @kiamarecordfair See more
